  • Allium seed head. Spring 2007

  • As I passed a garden on my travels during the summer these beautiful Sea Hollies caught my eye with their striking colour, Sea Holly, Eryngium planum is from the Greek word eringion meaning ‘thistle’ / Generally grown ornamentally for their interesting metallic spiny-toothed foliage and flower heads that are formed from thistle-like bracts surrounding a central flower. It is these thistle-like bracts that give rise to the name Sea Holly. Sea Holly flowers, bracts and upper stems develop a steel blue gray color in the later part of their growing season. If dried in darkness, this blue will remain and offers a very interesting texture and rare natural blue color. Sea Holly is an excellent dried flower but we recommend wearing gloves when working with it to avoid the spiny leaves. It is worth noting that there are a number of named Sea Holly cultivars and hybrids in existence that range in height, flower structure and flower color. One of favorites that offer an unusual pronounced white vein in a more narrow leave is the cultivar Sea Holly cv. ‘Jos Eijking’. / Also a European coastal herb of the genus Eryngium (E. maritimum) that has spiny leaves and pale blue flowers and was formerly used as an aphrodisiac

  • In a neighbouring town, a group of committed gardeners have created a new and lovely park filled with beautiful bulb plants, perennials, flowering shrubs and all on the grounds of an old seed supply company. Although the park is small, there is a surprising selection of plants to look at. The display of allium last summer was especially attractive and while they obviously make wonderful colour photographs, I chose black and white to emphasize their ‘architecture’.

  • This Allium, a member of the Onion family is growing in the garden, and just asked to be abstracted.

  • Mar wanted to see what it would look like, well Mar it did not turn out all that well because the flowers were not as well defined as usual, being so small, but this is it.

  • Wild Garlic or Ramsons (Allium ursinum) in Ashmeadow Wood, Arnside, Cumbria.

  • This Purple Allium is a perfect spherical ball of petals. It is now fully grown and at its very best. Hard to believe it is of the Onion family isn’t it? We have huge white ones too. / The shop NEXT have one for sale framed, it is white.and very expensive.

  • Being a new member of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), I’m learning tons of new vegetables, recipes, and the joy of a continually happy tummy! Learn even more about Community Supported Agriculture in Vermont at the NOFA-VT site. These are garlic scapes, which are the flower stems that grow from Allium sativum (garlic) before the bulb matures. The local CSA farmers remove the scapes to push the plant’s energy toward heartier bulbs of garlic (harvested a bit later in the season). Tender, delicious, a bit milder than the hardneck varieties of garlic that produce garlic scapes … a true delicacy for any garlic lover! So far, I’ve sauteed and stir fried the delicious (and gorgeous) garlic scapes. These are going to be made into pesto … If they are available in your area, I suggest trying them in your early summer cooking. If not, enjoy their beauty visually! They where not overly structured but left to ramble and grow together. / The minute I saw these Allium heads snuggled within pale grass, i immediatley thought of all those beautiful layered images i have seen on red bubble. / I have not yet learnt how to combine images and layers, so this is my thought on one but done completely by nature herself, i hope you like it as much as i do Featured in the Arists of Norfolk and Suffolk group 16.8.09 Nikon D90 and 18-105vr nikor lens focal length 105mm / F/. 16 / Exposure 1/60th / ISo 400 Hand held, Aperture piority and manual focus Only thing I have done is add a glamour glow no other changes have been made.

  • This plant is a botanic allium flower. The blooms are only 3 or 4 mm. So it is not easy to capture them when there is a breeze all day long. I love the colors and the elegance, like they are dancing in the sky. Photographer: Thea Walstra / /

  • Reminds me of a purple powder puff! Close up of Allium on purple background.

  • This morning my goal was to take pictures of birds, but my pics of my dried flowers ended up better. I was “tickled pink” with this random shot of my dried Allium seed heads. I try to keep these cut back because the seeds spread like wildfire in my garden. Natural focus – the only edit to this photo is a change in hue from green to pink/lavender. / Taken 11/9/09 in my backyard, Clarks Valley, PA

  • 11/13/09 ~ Featured in A Beautiful Blur ~ Thank you kindly :o) 11/13/09 ~ Featured in The Woman Photographer ~ Thank you very much ♥ This is a companion to my “Tickled Pink” photo. I played around with the original picture with color, blur, layering, etc.

  • Chives are great in salads, on sandwiches with sour cream and all sorts of other dishes. When adding chives in any dish, I would leave out the onion as they are stronger and will over-power the taste of the chives. / Chives is a perennial grassy looking green herb with a mild onion-like flavor, it really is a kitchen essential, providing that onion-like flavor where the assertiveness of onion itself would not fit. They are one of the classic fine herbes. /
