I recently wrote a little piece on the Back Alley Atelier Exhibition and sent it to the local paper (as you do). Well… The Moreland Leader has decided it’s newspaper worthy and it will be going to print. Yay!

  • What are we? / Atelier translated from the original French literally means workshop, in particular an artist’s workshop or studio. Our studio is anywhere, but it started in a garage and a back alley, and we’re inviting you in. We are a group of artists on Redbubble united not just by our geography, but our intent to create art in all forms that is provocative, exciting, stimulating and different. We’re throwing in our creative chips together and betting something interesting will happen. We share ideas, gear, wine and food. We are an antidote to the average and normal – a panacea to dull landscapes, cute pictures of puppies, kittens, and kiddies. We’re happy campers – not happy snappers. We want you to open your eyes as if for the first time. / We want you to feel estranged from the everyday. / We want you to dream lucidly and vividly. / We want you to feel naked and exposed. This is not a safe haven. / This is not a comfy chair and slippers. / This is not the family photo album. We are the tap that’s dripping in the back of your mind and the shoe lace you left undone. Do we have a plan? / Only to evolve… Contact Details / backalleyatelier@gmail.com / Or bbmail us Who’s in? / Check our watchlist… How can I watch you? / We upload work in our individual profiles, you’ll need to add members to your watchlist to be informed of all new work. /

Just sent in a request to make a new group – Alley Art, a group where you can upload anything from macro to modelling, so long as it’s within the confines of an alley or lane. Below’s some great Alley Art that inspired me to make the group: / The Passage – Anuja Manchanayake / / All posed out – Jo O’Brien & Helen Mclean! / / The Alley – Peter Hammer / If you’d love to to upload art to this potential group or help moderate it, I’d love to hear from you.

Firstly, many appy loggies for my relative absence from the bubble sphere recently. I’ve been working a retail management job that was a little bit nuts over Christmas, and am changing jobs yet again soon. Also the Back Alley Atelier exhibition has taken up a little bit of time. If you are in Melbourne please check it out and sign the guest book. One bubbler who did come all the way from the Blue Mountains NSW (not just for us, but still special) was gentleman, scholar and fine photographer “Andrew “The Boz Bosman . When he asked if I would like to show him the back alleys of Melbourne, I said “Sweet, I’ll round up some peeps, meet us under the clocks at Flinders St” (or words to that effect). So last Saturday we braved heat that only mad dogs and photographers would. The peeps: / Mark German / Stephen Colquitt / John Robb / Adrian Carmody / Hien Nguyen / Allen Lau The pics: / Cameras are effin’ tough – yeah / Strut / If it has a pulse, shoot it / Take a load off / Showing Boz the pristine bits of Melbourne / Stephen is centred / I got Mark from behind in a mirror / Photographic edumacation / We sent Boz down a dead end / And he ran in to some shady characters / Who said some stuff / We shot random ladies in frocks / The shadows got long and we were getting thirsty / And the Boz looked baffled It was all about love and lens nerds.

I’ve got a few alley and street shot’s strung through my portfolio, I thought I’d link them up into a series. Here’s a sample: / / None of these pics follow a specific style, some are similar and others a pretty different. Hope somebody out there likes em! Here’s the links / Lane Hot spot / Hosier Lane (this one’s a photo montage, not just a single photograph) / Greyscale Londsale / Melbourne Laneway 1 / All these were taken in Melbourne with a Pentax MZ-50 SLR.

  • If people haven’t worked out I’m a part of a group of photographers named Back Alley Atelier who have recently had our first exhibition. And since this has been one amazing trip I thought I should share some of the fun we’ve had, the exhibition itself and the people who inhabit it. We all got introduced through the first Red Bubble meet up oh so far back at the Marquis of Lorne in Collingwood, discussing the merits and methods of the photography. Mostly this centered around ideas we all had that needed support or help to accomplish. / It wasn’t until we had our first shoot a month and a half later in Jess’s garage that we started to realise that being that little bit nuts, enjoying yourself and a few cameras would make our nights and days a whole lot more fun. / I’m happy to call all five of them my friends, trust all of them to set up a shot that isn’t too dangerous and not trust any of them in a room with a bottle of alcohol(except Hien who I wouldn’t trust in a room with a can of V) People / And who are the five friends(and me)? / / Brain Dead Zombie (Wen) Brain Eating Zombie (Jess) Brain about to be eaten Zombie (Chris) / Jaw Dislocation Zombie 1(Me) Jaw Dislocation Zombie 2(Jo) Tongue Sticking Out Zombie (Hien) Shooting We do go out shooting… / / We get wet…(Our cameras are prescious) / ...we shoot wherever we can…. / ...standing on whatever we can… / ...laughing at a whole lot of shots(and the delete buttons do work overtime)... / ...we even kick back and relax. Exhibition / And since our exhibition has just happened I need to say a stack of thankyous to a whole lot of people as well as show some of the day / We had what seemed an insurmoutably task, For the hanging we should thank Bernice, who without her help we would still be trying to get the pictures straight / The friends and family who’ve helped us out during the exhibition. Specific mention to Kristy Lee and James for help on the setup, the manning and the packing up. It is all greatly appreciated. / The gallery itself, Mark, Jo and the volunteers who were there. / Red Bubble, who sponsored the exhibition and helped us promote the day. / And lastly to all the Red Bubblers who turned up throughout the whole time, the people who came on the first night or came on the last day, all support was welcome and thanked.

  • Back Alley Atelier – Cold Blooded Nights
    by Back Alley Atelier

/ / Back Alley Atelier – Cold Blooded Nights It was a colder spring night in Melbourne as we gathered at Borsch, Vodka and Tears to eat, drink wine and vodka cocktails, and discuss what needed to be done. We’ve got the props, we’ve got the gear, we’ve got the locations and a guest model Haily Swanson (who may not know what she’s in for). The first location was a skinny and long alleyway in Windsor (Melbourne) clad with walls of corrugated iron. Shots taken here were Shark Attack by Jessica Tremp, Tactile and Our Jezebel by Chris W, both provided with technical and lighting assistance by our favourite cat, Wen (Dajiro Kato), and Shoot The Model by Michman and Hien Nguyen. The props that got a workout here were Sharkie and the ‘hellmet’ constructed by Chris W. The first mild splashes of the Jo’s sweet fake blood were applied discretely. Back at the host studio flat, we crammed in to have a few more drinks, both caffeine and alcohol based, and set up the next shots. After Haily’s encounter with Sharkie, we decided it was time to do something relaxing, such as putting red cat eye contacts in her eyes, silver fang Grillz on her teeth, getting her in a bikini and feeding her a pretty pink cup cake. A little dribble of Jo’s edible blood added something extra as we swarmed around like lens-eyed bees and snapped away. The result was the pin up parody Blood Sugar Bunny by Chris W. Michman also took the shot En Guarde with Jessica dangerously pointing a random sword. After the indoor interlude we decided it was time to head out in to the cold night again for a pedestrian bridge over Dandenong Rd and the park on the other side. Michael had the “Hellmet” next with Chris taking shot Hunting Light. This is where things got messy. Jo drew out the fake blood and the rope and decided it was time to put Haily through her paces by tying her up and splattering her with copious quantities of sanguine lovelieness. The resulting images, photographed by Hien Nguyen under Jo’s artistic direction were Cinematic Homicide (also featuring the knife wielding Michman) and Found. We all hovered around the scene of the crime shooting like the Melbourne Underworld There are still some more images to come from the Cold Blooded Nights shoot and future shoots, you can look out for them by adding Back Alley Atelier and each of it’s members to your watchlist. Work is uploaded in the portfolio of the member that developed or directed the concept and favourited to Back Alley Atelier. You can view all work produced by us in the favourites section of the portfolio. Are there side effects? / We’re all experiencing sleeplessness, emotional highs and lows, possible mild alcoholism, creative expansion, an excess of ideas and a f**k of a lot of fun. We think outside the square and squeeze it all back in to the bubble. Love etc, Back Alley Atelier

I have created a new 2009 calendar of some of this years icebergs that have floated down Iceberg Alley. If anyone is interested in purchasing one of these calendars they are $35 shipping and taxes included so please send me a bubblemail and I will order the calendar for you and get it shipped to your location. In regards to payment you just simply put the amount in my paypal account. I have done this before and it works really well. / / / From the Northern tip of Labrador down to the eastern coast of Newfoundland, the sea that pounds and caresses these shores is nicknamed Iceberg Alley. Bergs born 10,000 years ago on the Greenland icecap dance along the coast and far out to sea, propelled unpredictably by wind and tide, tumbling, twirling, and breaking into fantastic shapes before melting in the warm waters of the gulf stream. An iceberg’s journey down Iceberg Alley begins once it breaks off from the edges of Greenland’s glaciers. Dropping into the ocean, it is gripped by the Labrador Current and carried through the dark ocean along the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the past, during certain times of the year, the alley has been thick with the largest and most beautiful icebergs found anywhere in the world. They glide majestically along, alone or in groups, obscuring the horizon with their tall, jagged silhouettes. / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

My 2010 calendar This year I haven’t used my own art work but that of the amazing street artists who work around inner Melbourne for several reasons: - Because I do like the colourful art that livens up some of the otherwise dull side streets and admire the skill of the artists - Because much of that work will eventually be lost – painted over – it’s good to have a record of some of it - Because I wanted something very colourful to hang in my kitchen next year!!!!!
