A fisherman at packs up for the day. ‘Secret Beach’, about 45mins rickshaw ride from Alleppey, Kerala, India.
This husband and wife were originally from Chennai, India, but have moved to Alleppey in search of work. This doorway is their home. What struck me was how proud they were of each other, and how they showed immense affection and respect towards one another. They DEMANDED to be photographed. The nicest people we met in all of India … and quite possibly the nicest two people we’ve met anywhere (typical of Chennai people). I wish them the best of luck.
A portrait of a kind, Muslum gentleman in Alleppey, Kerela, India. / His family ran a chai stand just around the corner from the guest house we were staying at. After only a couple of visits for chai, his family welcomed us with open arms – we didn’t even have to pay for chai anymore! But ofcourse we insisted that they take the money. I’ve always been fascinated by Islamic patterns and architecture – true art.
This beautiful lady is from Alleppey, Kerala, India. Her family own a chai stall on a street corner. The Muslim people in Alleppey are pamongst the friendliest people in all of India.
This man from Alleppey, India, asked if I could take his photo. With pleasure!
Sunset over the Kerala Backwaters, Kerala, India. The sunsets in this part of the world are amazing. The fireball in the sky doesn’t actually radiate a lot of light, and the contrasting darkness of the landscape was very surreal. It was amazing to be here. I really like the faint silhouette of the palms. My camera’s sensor was covered in a lot of grit when I took this image, and the long exposure really brought it out. It was fun spotting the little blotches – ahh, memories of the good old days of film scans!
A woman in a bright orange dress looks out over the backwaters in Kerala, India. That is a banana tree she is standing next to. Not only is it’s fruit delicious and sweet (much better than the crappy bananas we get in Melbourne), but the large leaves are used as plates for eating spicy ‘thali’ throughout Kerala and Tamil Nadu. I would like to have framed this a little differently, but it was taken from a moving boat, and only seen at the last second.

Duck flock farming in Alappuza ( Alleppey). The duck are kept in flocks of thousands of birds. They travel around cleaning up in the rice paddies after harvest. The eggs are sold as are the ducks over time. More recently, during dry times, they travel up to hundreds of kilometres both by truck and overland before returning for the rice harvest.
