Captured digitally using a Sony Alpha 100 at the Southern Cross Station in Melbourne.. This image was the winner of the “best alternative medium” at the ” Artbeat 2006 – Hung Art Competition and Exhibition ” August 2006. Also the winner of “Peoples Choice Award” at The Digital/Hardcopy exhibition at The Gasworks Gallery in Albert Park October 2006. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / This image will be on display and for sale at the Strathcona Art show 7th – 9th September 2007 at Tay Creggan in Hawthorn. / The image will be presented framed, matted & signed. Driving along this almost deserted highway we spotted this Love heart, somewhere between Uluru and Kings Canyon. An amazing piece of work, literally in the middle of nowhere. Hence the title, Love is all around…even in the middle of nowhere….. Taken a couple of days ago in Ilha do Mocambique, a small island forgotten some 2500km from Mozambiquan capital Maputo. It is less than 3 km long but has more than 1500 years of history. Until 1898 this was the capital of the Portuguese colony of Mozambique and the focal point of their trade and industry. The island was a major Arab port and boatbuilding centre long before Vasco da Gama visited in 1498. The island is an amazing melting pot of cultures with influences of Madagascar, Tanzania, India, Portugal, Brazil, and the Middle East, even if 85% of the inhabitants are Muslims. Today, the island is a maze of narrow streets hemmed by tall buildings with a bustling harbour and market. I decided to work there in a school for the Art in All of Us activities. It was a long trip from Lilongwe (capital of Malawi) to get this Pearl of the Ocean. No direct transport to do the about 1000 km to the Island. It is then with patience, smile and craziness that we traveled 180 km of minibus, 60 km of pick up, 15 km of bushtaxi, 7km of bicycle, 10km by foot, 180 hitchhiking, 550 km by train, 4 km by foot, 125 km of minibus, 55 km of minibus to reach the embark to the Ilha. It was worth the nearly 3 days and nights of travel and transpiration. Kids of the visited school were really amazing and so creative ! / I used candlewax, few different sized black marker pens, retractable pencils, charcoal white and black, ink and pastels on a small piece of timber to create “Happiness Always”......and that’s what I wish for everyone…. happiness always it could be for a newborn baby, just cheer someone who’s a little sad, or for a birthday ~ wishing someone happiness always is just a nice thing to do any time of the year :)

Perhaps the older girl is the little one’s mother or sister, perhaps she is sensei passing down instructions on how to tend the flowers. / / / original pencil drawing ...stayed up very late drawing “Nature’s Child”... you know when it’s time for a baby to be born, i think it’s very similar with art… the inspiration just comes when it’s ready…and sometimes that means drawing til 3am like i did with this one. ...the drawing took about 3 hours, and the digital colouring took about 5 hours today. ...inspired by some fantastic eyes i’ve seen lately, (drawn by people on RB) and the dear little willy wagtails…they are so cheeky…they aren’t authentic in colour here, because they are always black and white with little markings above the eye…but i have put their essence into the work hopefully. I think this is my favourite so far :) /

/ / A little bit of nostalgia running through this drawing, with the good old love beads, i always love wearing love beads, and I still have some which are orange and lime … and another strand of blue and white. You can wear them so many different ways. The image was drawn in pencil on cartridge paper in my A3 spiral bound art journal and after photographing I coloured her digitally on the computer. Before I took the photo I actually painted her ‘love beads’ with acrylics and inks…and i stuck a fimo flower on her beads, which i made for another application, and then painted it naples yellow with a white centre.

There are all the colours of the rainbow in this piece, to remind us that there is always hope, no matter how hopeless it seems sometimes. The rainbow is a sign of hope. Children See/Children Do powerful message for grownups I hope that all the children who look at this painting will drift off into a faraway place in their imagination and feel wonderful for a while, especially if things are getting them down…and if life is wonderful, may this little picture add to the wonder and spark the imagination.
