In honor of the sextiling of Jupiter and Mars at 4:29pm EST/US on 10/27/08, I thought it would be interesting to play with the symbology of this particular event… / Remember the song, Age of Aquarius, the group who sang it was the 5th Dimension and was made popular by the Broadway musical “HAIR”... When the Moon is in the Seventh House(Libra/Venus – according to current calendar ended 9/23), however, also note that we humans have been altering time with such things as Daylight Savings, etc…Four days (?) And Jupiter aligns with Mars – the aspect of sextile, links planets in compatible elements, encouraging an active exchange, eager to work together – an exciting conversation…Jupiter is representative of the Producing/Expansion department, that is positive, optimistic and generous – usually associated astrologically by imposing god-like bearded men like Zues or Marduk, with the seat of anger and primitive emotion driving the forces. Also associated with Jupiter are the Eagle, sceptre, thunderbolts, power, equilibrium, justice, optimism, organizing, ability, the color Blue, the East direction, Thursday and the metal, Tin. While Mars, on the other hand, is the security department head, responding with action and self-defense, making one brave, courageous, daring and even fearless. Astrologically, it’s the symbol of the aggressive man, like the Roman God Mars, the Greek Ares, or Mesopotamian Nergal, helmeted with a shield and sword or spear, perhaps mounted, sometimes with a wolf. Also associated with Mars are energy, violence, courage, ardour, tension, fire, iron, the color red, South direction and Tuesday. Then peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars… / This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius… / Harmony and Understanding / Sympathy and trust abounding / No more falsehoods or derisions / Golden living dreams of visions / Mystic crystal revelation and the mind’s true liberation – Aquarius… OK, so I’m a hopeful romantic…I can DREAM!!! Shot of the Moon with the words to the song “Aquarius”, originally sung on Broadway in the musical “Hair”, written in 1964; made even more famous by the 5th Dimension, in 1969. / The shot is for MIA’s newest challenge… Forty years ago, the intuitive words of a song called “Aquarius” brought the dawning of the new age into our collective awareness: / When the moon is in the Seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars. Then peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars. / At dawn on February 14, the Cosmos actually embodies this perfect alignment to support our collective manifestation of love and peace and the dawning of the Age of Aquarius. We are offered cosmic support to re-membering who we really are, by a rare astrological concentration that brings together a number of planets together with the North Node (higher purpose) in Aquarius, which energizes and inspires the possibility for transcendental breakthrough and healing. / We measure our global sense of both space (longitude) and time (universal time – GMT) from the prime meridian located at Greenwich, England. We can perceive the collective influence of this momentous astrological event by looking at the alignment from this globally ‘centered’ perspective. When we do, something exquisite and extraordinary emerges. / At dawn, 2/14, the day dedicated to St. Valentine, the patron saint of Love, the Moon in Libra enters the seventh house of relationships. And Jupiter and Mars are aligned in Aquarius in the twelfth house of spiritual transformation. / The Aquarian chart reveals an incredible concentration of cosmic influences blending with the energies, with the presence of Chiron, the wounded healer, offering us the opportunity to heal the schisms that have separated us for so long. Neptune emphasizes collective humanitarian movements and the co-creation of social justice. And, the presence of the radiant Sun enlightens the entire alignment. Mercury also in the twelfth house, just beyond the cusp of Capricorn allies with transformational Pluto to communicate and anchor the SHIFT throughout our global structures and institutions. / The Moon in Libra (in the 7th house) emphasizes harmonious real-ationships; Venus in Aries (in the 1st house) energizes and empowers dynamic co-creativity. Tutorial: Photographing the Milky Way with a standard DSLR camera

I have an improved and better formatted version of this tutorial in my wordpress blog. This tutorial will cover the development of my image Milky Way from Apollo Bay using a Canon 350D, a wide angle lens, Adobe Photoshop and an image alignment program called hugin. For this to be repeatable you must be shooting with clear dark skies, free from light pollution. I used settings of Tv: 20 sec, Av: f/4, focal length: 17mm and ISO speed: 1600. A shutter release cable is also a great tool and can keep your camera clicking as it sits on the tripod. The more images taken, the better for the final result, because this will improve the signal to noise ratio that plagues digital sensors during long exposures. A tracking mount is not necessary with a 20 second shutter speed because the rotation of the night sky is undetectable at such a wide angle. Please read the following steps for more information. All images are hyperlinked to larger sizes. 1) Download this zipped folder containing four of my unaligned shots of the Milky Way. 2) Load them into hugin_0.7_beta_4. 3) Manually align images with control points – don’t automatically align. I aligned three images to a common one. Enlarge the screenshot for details. 4) Click Edit – fine tune all points. 5) Click View – preview window. 6) Click Center and Fit buttons to achieve this view. 7) Click Edit – Optimise. 8) Click Stitcher – image format – multiple tiff . Final screen before clicking Stitch Now . 9) If you don’t want to worry about learning how to align the images with hugin, then you can download this zipped folder containing the four prealigned images of the Milky Way. 10) Load each image onto a new layer in photoshop adjusting the blend mode to screen which is good at lightening images without lightening the darkest areas. 11) Add a medium contrast curves layer. 12) Add colour balance layer: shadows (-90,-25,-10), midtones (-15,-5,-20), highlights (0,-5,30). 13) The final result For comparison’s sake, shown below is a typical accompanying jpeg to a raw file I began with for one of the individual images. I used Adobe Camera Raw to extract the jpegs provided in step 1 for processing. In closing, I’d like to point out this is not the only way an image like this can be captured; there is myriads of possibilities. I have developed this simple and inexpensive method by just experimenting with the tools at my disposal. Comments are welcomed. This was a sight to behold. My photo is nothing on the real thing. It was simply spectacular. It won’t happen again until 2036. This was taken using a tripod but it’s nothing compared with professional photography of course. But the memories will stick. A smile that will light up the night sky

What I appreciate about JC is his mastery, commitment, professionalism. He maintains an accessibility and “down-to-earthness” in spite of his global success. It is uplifting to watch him walk into Baker’s Keyboard Lounge (Detroit) carrying his horn. I know, through his performance, the audience will be transported into a heavenly dimension. James Carter autographed this 18×24 original. This original is not for sale. This piece was conceptualized by utilizing, as a reference, a photo by Han Speekenbrink and images of the solar system.
