From the series Fairy tales
Pastel on Kitty Wallis sanded pastel paper, from “The White Album” series. The tooth of this sanded paper takes many layers of pastel. I prime the surface with rust colored nupastel rubbed in with turpenoid before working. Inspired by the Beatles cover of Carole King’s tune of the same name. “Chains, my baby’s got me locked up in chains and they ain’t the kind that you can see, oh oh these chains of love got a hold on me, yeah!” In April 2007, “Chains” won round 2 of the International Saatchi Showdown Online Competition and was shown at the Saatchi Gallery in London. I received this email January 6th, 2009 from the Saatchi Gallery: Dear Alice I am delighted to inform you that your work is currently being exhibited in the Saatchi Gallery – please find attached a photograph of your work on display. Below is the label that we are using for the work. An illustration for the well-known story of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, where she meets Mister Caterpillar. Who persists in asking her: “Who are you?” Done with oil pastel on cardboard, details added in with a normal pencil.

What Alice should have done
I was once told Alice in Wonderland could be read as a metaphore for a trip to a mental asylum. Maybe, maybe not, there are so many theories about that book… but somehow it stuck with me, and here is my slightly demented Alice. 4th of my fair maiden rainbow, and last for now, I’m wondering what to do for the 3 remaining (orange, yellow and violet).

Self Portrait Originally inspired by a song quote / “do bats eat cats” which related to Alice In Wonderland. It’s a very abstract image… but when I look at it, somehow it does remind me of a darker, more twisted Alice as well as the Cheshire Cat. © Jessica Walker

Subliminal though it may be, Desirée / Glanville speaks through her fantastic / fractal renderings and choice of music. / The Wiz – Ease on down the road, a / combination of fractals created with / Apophysis, is an example of her / music-inspired work. / A late seventies movie follow-up to a smash Broadway hit,The Wiz, / with its updated, urban Wizard of Oz theme, features characters / rising above their background and others’ expectations of them. / “Ease on Down the Road”, Desirée’s subtitle, is their road-trip theme song; sung by the late Michael / Jackson and Diana Ross, playing the scarecrow and Dorothy, respectively. The two joyfully make their / way down the yellow brick road, laughing, stumbling, and dancing, off to see “the Wiz” (the late Richard / Pryor). / Desirée strews our path with pink and yellow flowers and fantasy crystals, through which we see more / worlds. The landscape is draped in a muli-colored veil of dreams. Butterflies hover above, harbingers of / new life. / Dorothy, ultimately tells the Wiz, when he turns to her for help. ”…you’ll never find [what you’re looking / for] in the safety of this room. I tried that all my life. It doesn’t work. There’s a whole world out there. And / you’ll have to begin by letting people see who you really are.” / Is this Desirée’s message? As artists, getting out of that safe zone and letting others know who we really / are is probably where we begin to “ease on down the road”; the ultimate road trip to the pinnacle, where / the art of joy and the joy of art meet. Model: Bubbler Brett Manning SYMBOLISM: From the Black Butterfly series, charcoal on mylar drafting film, with white backing paper 19×32” From a reference photo self-portrait by Redbubble friend Brett Manning, aka brettisagirl. The piece is inspired by Brett’s artistic “muses” (the butterflies) art, fashion, design, illustration, drawing, her Frankie, coffee, chocolate, her kitties, her puppies, and 60’s music, especially Bob Dylan. The butterflies are “ideas” that flutter around her head. The necklace is a nod to fashion, and to the lyric in Bob Dylan’s tune of the same name. “The World’s Biggest Necklace” is also from Egyptian mythology. There are eleven butterflies, symbolic for myself and my ten siblings. “Isis” lyrics by Bob Dylan: I married Isis on the fifth day of May, / But I could not hold on to her very long. So I cut off my hair and I rode straight away / For the wild unknown country where I could not go wrong. I came to a high place of darkness and light. The dividing line ran through the center of town. I hitched up my pony to a post on the rise, / Went in to a laundry to wash my clothes down. A man in the corner approached me for a match. I knew right away he was not ordinary. He said, “Are you lookin’ for somethin’ easy to catch?” / I said, “I got no money.” He said, “That ain’t necessary. / “ We set out that night for the cold in the North. I gave him my blanket, he gave me his word. I said, “Where are we goin’?” He said we’d be back by the fourth. I said, “That’s the best news that I’ve ever heard. / “ I was thinkin’ about turquoise, I was thinkin’ about gold, / I was thinkin’ about diamonds and the world’s biggest necklace. As we rode through the canyons, through the devilish cold, / I was thinkin’ about Isis, how she thought I was so reckless.

Self Portrait. I’ve become a bit of a solitaire addict as of late, so I guess you could call this my Guilty Pleasure!! / Experimenting with my new wireless remote, which is a bitch to use by the way. This is my White Rabbit photo for my Alice in Wonderland Series, it’s not quite the same style, so I haven’t made a big thing out of it, just tacked it on the end. But yes. It’s the white rabbit. Canon 450D. No geeky stuff, I can’t be bothered, it’s not like you miss it. ...I must admit though, I didn’t take the picture of the cards (shock horror!!) because I couldn’t find any. Instead, you can find it here somewhere in the middle of the page.. I’m sorry guys!! Cross-processed and the like on Photoshop CS3.
