This is my first attempt at Photo editing. A very kind friend on RB offered a few pointers and this was the result. Alex is about 5 months old here and is among the last photos I have of him. I had intended to upload his photos in chronological order but I wanted to share this one now. Taken with a Canon EOS 35D and the standard 18-55mm lens. Alex became my reason to get out of bed in the morning. I had been medically discharged after 34yrs in the military and was unable to continue working. I lived for my work because I enjoyed it so much, I loved being able to teach students, look after their needs, help them with personal problems and to pass on the knowledge I had accumulated over the years. I was an instructor at the ADFSC (Australian Defence Force School of Catering). Almost every day was a 12hr day or more. / / Suddenly being unable to work any more destroyed my life, I felt useless, I was just taking up space, and had no real reason to continue living. / / Alex changed all that, he took me from the depths of suicidal depression and gave me a new lease on life…..I now had a reason to live, to get up in the morning and look after my friend. I now had someone to teach and care for. I could play “Dad” and Teacher all over again…..It did not take long before this interaction became an essential part of both our days. In less than a week this little man did what councilors and psychiatrists had been trying to do for 3 years….To say Alex had an impact on my life would be a massive understatement. / / / / / Mon 06-July-09…...Focus and Lighting /

Among the other things that Alex, my Alexandrine parrot, enjoyed doing was playing on his gym. Well it really wasn’t a gym as such but it had all the things he loved to play with. It was all natural timber and all the attachments were safe for him to p[lay with. He would spend hours on it. It was only after I had said “Go Play” that he was allowed to go and play on it, hence the caption. He would run to the left along the top rail and would wait for a scratch. I had placed his playground beside my chair. This was taken with a Canon EOS350D using the standard 18-55mm lens. This is Alex, an Alexandrine Parrot. The reason for “Gotcha” as the title of this work is because he is gripping a single feather with his beak. As his feathers were growing a semi-transparent, sleeve like arrangement, would develop and encase the new feather completely. By working this sleeve off it allowed the green feathers to come through and to start to grow. Time consuming work, one feather at a time until all his feathers had been released. Alex would even let me assist where I could. Taken with a Canon EOS 350D with the standard 18-55mm lens. Wild parrots settle in suburbs / By Sean Coughlan / BBC News education The number of wild parrots living in England is rising at 30% per year, says an Oxford University research project. Parks and gardens in the leafy London suburbs have been adopted as a preferred habitat by birds that are native to southern Asia. In the Surrey stockbroker belt, a single sports ground is believed to be home to about 3,000 parrots. The rate of increase, helped by mild winters, is much greater than had been expected. The findings have also been echoed by a large number of e-mails from BBC News Online readers, who have reported how parrots – particularly parakeets – have now become familiar sights. Parrot hotspots These hundreds of e-mails, including photographs, highlighted hotspots such as west of London, Surrey and parts of Kent. Parakeets in King George Park in Ramsgate / Parakeets in King George Park in Ramsgate, / But there were also parrots reported in inner-London, including parks in Peckham, Brixton, Greenwich and Kensington. And a few parrots had been spotted in East Anglia, the North West and in Scotland. There were also sightings from readers overseas, reporting urban parrots in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain and the United States. E-mails from readers also offer a range of theories about the arrival of parrots in Britain – including that they were brought by Jimi Hendrix, that they escaped during the making of a film and that they were released from aviaries damaged during the great storm of 1987. Researchers have been tracking several varieties of parakeet, originally from countries such as India and Brazil, but which are now surviving in ever-greater numbers in southern England. There have been reports that there could now be 20,000 wild parrots, including parakeets, living in England, with the largest concentration around London and the South East. The population boom has been put down to a series of mild winters, a lack of natural predators, food being available from humans and that there are now enough parrots for a wider range of breeding partners.
