Hughes Pump House – MOONTA Yorke Peninsula, South Australia The historic town of Moonta is approximately 165 kilometres north-west of Adelaide, in the upper Yorke Peninsula region known alternately as South Australia’s ‘Copper Triangle’ or ‘Little Cornwall’. The Moonta Mines State Heritage Area extends approximately 2.5 kilometres east-west, and 3.5 kilometres north-south, of the town. It covers most of the former Moonta Mining Company lease, and includes the main mining, industrial and residential components of Moonta Mines and Yelta. The town of Moonta on the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia was the place that in 1861, Paddy Ryan found copper traces coming out of a wombats burrow. The wombat’s burrow was on the pastoral lease of Walter Sir Walter Watson Hughes. Hughes formed the Tipara Mining Company, which later became the Moonta Mining Co. Willunga Bangor Slate Quarry / Originally opened in 1842 by Thomas Williams the slate quarry (then known as the Willunga Bangor Company) was an important industry in the district with slate carted to Aldinga and transferred to ships. The quarry is an important reminder of the thriving slate industry which supplied slates for many of the buildings constructed in Adelaide and Melbourne in the nineteenth century. / The Bangor Slate Quarry is still in use today. • More images from the coast of South Australia can be seen @ / www.glennalderson.com An added bonus when visiting McLaren Vale is that you are able to drive through the vineyards down to the coastline to magnificent white sandy beaches and have lunch or dinner at Star of Greece. Named after a cargo ship that ran aground in 1888, Star of Greece is perched on cliffs looking towards the blue waters of the Gulf of St. Vincent and up the dramatic coast, resembling the Adriatic coastline or the white cliffs of Dover – all this only a short distance from Adelaide’s finest wineries.

  • More images from the coast of South Australia can be seen @ / www.glennalderson.com Nikon D90 ~ Old Port Willunga Jetty / These old Redgum Piles are all that is left of the Jetty at Port Willunga, South Australia. Officially opened on the 6th February 1868. It was built at a cost of 5,300.00 Pounds and replaced previous structures that had failed to assist in the transport of wheat and other local goods such as slate from Willunga. By 1900 all trade using the jetty had ceased and the structure was severely damaged in 1915. During WW2 the remainder of the jetty was destroyed by the Australian Army.
