An exterior wall on Alcatraz Island in dereliction. Hard to believe that something so beautiful would be found in such an ugly place. Such is the beautiful contrast of life. San Francisco, California Circa 2005
The Portsmouth Naval Prison, also known as the Castle and Alcatraz of the East, was built between 1905 and 1908 on Seavey’s Island. It was modled after Alcatraz, and the strong tidal currents around the island kept it escape free from 1908 till it closed in 1974. It has sat there for 34 years empty.
On March 21, 1907, Alcatraz was officially designated as the Western US Military Prison. Alcatraz Island, CA, USA /
This shot was taken while on a cruise of the San Francisco Bay. This was probably the most famous of prisons in its day.

The Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz (if you can see it!). I just loved the color of the sky and water.
Alcatraz Island, sometimes informally referred to as simply Alcatraz or locally as The Rock, is a small island located in the middle of San Francisco Bay in California, United States. It served as a lighthouse, then a military fortification, then a military prison followed by a federal prison until 1963. It became a national recreation area in 1972 and received landmarking designations in 1976 and 1986.
I enjoyed taking this shot from Sausalito Calif. The weather condition was light fog rolling in putting a haze over Alcatraz. Capturing the sail boat adds a sense of adventure to this piece of art…. / David Humphrey

We left Alcatraz to go see the Golden Gate Bridge and the sunset that was happening was so beautiful over the Bridge. When I turned to look back at Alcatraz it had this golden glow from the sunset. Hope you like it and thank you for looking.

One of the most infamous prisons on the planet and one of the hardest of the hard. I went on a tour and was shocked by what the prisoners had to survive in. Small stone cells with no ventilation, much less heating or cooling so the bay weather was what you felt 24/7. This was the place where you got sent if you were so terrible they weren’t even gonna execute you. LOL!
Every so often that little Panasonic TZ4 nails a shot. This completely unedited shot of the bunker house with the 7 foot thick walls, the bay and the bridge was one of a burst of 4 shots, all of them perfect. It’s the mid-range stuff that sucks with this pocket rocket. What you see in the water is rather rough surf. What you’ll see in a moment are some very brave or very stupid surfers out IN that surf. Kindly featured in Northern California Style and the San Francisco Group. :-)
a unique view of alcatraz / san francisco
A view of Alcatraz from the San Francisco Harbor. Alcatraz Island, commonly referred to as The Rock, is a small island located in the middle of San Francisco Bay in California, United States. It served as a lighthouse, then a military fortification, then a military prison followed by a federal prison until 1963. It became a national recreation area in 1972 and received landmarking designations in 1976 and 1986. / Today, the island is a historic site operated by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to tours. / During its 29 years of operation, the penitentiary claimed no prisoners as having ever successfully escaped. 36 prisoners were involved in 14 attempts, two men trying twice; seven were shot and killed, and two drowned. The most violent occurred on 2 May 1946 when a failed escape attempt by six prisoners led to the so-called “Battle of Alcatraz”. Nikon D90
From the central drain of Coit Tower’s open top, the D80 shot upward using the timer and capturing a stunningly blue sky. (It also caught an old guy looking down at it but ignore that part). LOL!
There I was, walking almost catatonically away from my humble but stolen vehicle, feeling as badly as any human can feel. I’ve got my camera and I’ve got ZIP for inspiration, almost wanting to chuck it at anyone who asks for it. Well, this is what pulled me back into camera mode. I can tell from the meta data on the file but I hadn’t realized it at the time. What was left of my “human energy” was looking around and saw this sign. If someone had seen a very hairy & old black guy carrying a Nikon D80, tears in his eyes, and cackling like an insane photojournalist while aiming at a freaking AD for leaving your car at home more often, I would have gotten a free ride to a padded room. The irony was so bitter I could taste it right thru that damned rancid lemonade… Corel PaintShop Pro XI did the semi-fade of the background to make the sign seen the way it seemed to me at the time: hideously vibrant. I had a tough time with the selection tool for some odd reason but I got close to what I wanted (if YOU don’t look too closely!)

FEATURED IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA STYLE Alcatraz is best known as “the Rock” – a prison where the worst of the worst were incarcerated. However, the island is also the site of the first California lighthouse. The original structure was a California cottage – a two-story structure with a tower in the center. The fifty-foot lighthouse was painted white with black trim and a back lantern room. The fixed third-order lens did not arrive until October 1853. Budget problems delayed installation until 1854. A fog bell was added in 1856, when it was clear that San Francisco’s now well-known fog often rendered the light ineffective. The original bell had to be rung by hand – quite a task considering the density of fog in the area. Later fog bells had a clockwork mechanism which would automatically ring the bell at prescribed intervals. As the city of San Francisco grew, a new flashing fourth-order lens was installed, to aid mariners in distinguishing it from city lights. On April 18, 1906, the San Francisco earthquake rattled the lighthouse. The lighthouse tower was cracked, and one of the chimneys tumbled down. / Work on a new lighthouse began in 1909. The new tower was eighty-four feet tall. Electricity powered the light and the fog sirens at the north and south ends of the island. Due to the high cost of maintaining a prison on an island, the government closed the prison in 1963. In November 1963, the lighthouse was automated. The lens was removed, and a reflecting light installed. The historic site was saved from the wrecking ball in 1972, when Alcatraz was made a part of the newly-formed Golden Gate National Recreational Area, and administered by the National Parks Service. Today, a 200,000 candlepower optic shines from the 1909 tower. The island is a popular tourist attraction. The fourth-order Fresnel lens is on display in the island museum. Much of the island has been reclaimed by nature. In 2004, the lighthouse celebrated its 150th anniversary. Visitors were given the rare opportunity to climb to the top, which is normally not open to the public. Nikon D90 / Nikkor 18-200 lens / HDR Photomatix Pro
