Each year in October, the sky is filled with the beauty of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. In this painting, I combined my love of cactus with colorful hot air balloons against a backdrop of the Sandia Mountains.
This was sketched from a prickly pear cactus growing in our yard in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I just had fun with color, incorporating all the colors around me.
Five volcanic cones lie along the West Mesa of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They are part of the Petroglyph National Monument. The area surrounding the volcanoes is a favorite place of mine, because it has such a sense of spirituality and solitude. This is an original acrylic painting on canvas and measures 24” high x 30” wide.
This is an original acrylic painting of the bright pink bloom of a hedgehog cactus. I had a cactus like this at one time and it would bloom vibrantly once each summer. .
Massive hot air launch in Albuquerque, New Mexico! It was an awesome sight to see, nestled in the mountains!
I just couldn’t pick my favorites, I love bright colors.
Late afternoon in Old Town Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. / A beautiful place to be. / /
At Albuquerque’s recent Art Festival flamenco dancers entertained the crowd and this young woman looked so graceful and beautiful I just had to take her photograph. I hope she doesn’t mind. Featured in Color and Light group, RedBubble, July 2009 Featured in New Mexico group, RedBubble, July 2009 /
And there I stood in the middle of the New Mexican desert, awaiting the sun to come over the peaks of the Sandia’s….my tripod was so cold I couldn’t even touch it, thankfully I had the car behind me running, where I was returning to for some hand warming every 3 minutes. However, it was worth it! It is just so utterly tranquil, not a sound, lost in the vastness of nature….... Thoughts welcomed!
As I drove out to the distant Salina’s Pueblo Mission Ruins in the middle of no where New Mexico (I mean REALLY out there!) , I drove through many Indian Reservations….a few were a tad on the scary side if ya will…however this one where I shot this on was a little larger and signs of life seemed rather optimistic. I saw this scene and just knew I had to stop and take it, a glimpse into the historical past of the Native American people of the Manzano tribe and Nation….. Thoughts welcomed!
Up above The Library Bar and Grill in Albuquerque, New Mexico these large novels with their quirky titles reigned supreme. / / /
The Enchanting Snowfall Taken atop the Sandia Mountains outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico, it seemed like a whole other world. Utterly surreal and serene, you heard nothing….absolute tranquility where the air is so fresh, it invigorates you with every breath…so clean. For this shot I really wanted to try and put the viewer in the scene itself, so they could experience what it was like as I stood there clicking the shutter. I zoomed in some to get the details and the in camera crop which I wanted. Tell me what ya think! / -John / ps-Ya gotta love those Minolta blues!
As Is. / This wonderful artwork transformed by the effects of late afternoon sunlight and shadow in the central plaza area of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center near the Old Town area of Albuquerque, New Mexico. There must be at least 50 shafts of light falling across the artwork. / The Centre is owned by the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico and features educational programmes and exhibitions and is a unique place to learn about the fascinating Pueblo cultures and traditions and the people. An absolute must see if you’re in Albuquerque. / www.indianpueblo.org Featured in Public Art group, RedBubble, July 2009 / /
This is one of the images I did for Albuquerque Magazine, which ran a special “Albuquerque After Dark” issue in October 2008. Sarah is the model and make-up artist, also one of the stylists working at Laru Ni Hati salon, where this shot was photographed. Used 2 studio strobes with umbrellas: 1 behind me to the left directed at the model, and another off to the right, bounced off ceiling and wall on left. Regular overhead biz lights were on, as well.
San Felipe de Neri is a beautiful old church located in Old Town, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The original church was built in 1706 and was located across the street. It crumbled due to heavy rains in 1792. It was rebuilt in 1793 in it’s current location and is the oldest church in Albuquerque. All proceeds from this work are to be donated to the Philadelphia Mission to feed, clothe, and provide medicine and education to the starving children in Africa. This shot was taken last holiday season on a night when my wife and I originally set out to look for Christmas farolito shots. We found our route blocked for a Christmas parade and wound up on a side street just off Central Avenue in Albuquerque’s Nob Hill section. Happily, there was this beautiful green door, shining like a beacon. It turned out to be the best shot of the night and one of my favorite night shots ever. Pentax K20D, 3 seconds @ F3.5 with.5 AV compensation, 18mm.
This is a friend of mine from San Felipe Pueblo, NM / This photo was taken near The Sunport Airport in / Albuquerque, NM

Albuquerque, New Mexico is home to the annual International Balloon Fiesta held every October. Part of the incredible magic of this event is being able to walk among the balloons as they are inflating, readying to take off. This photo, from a fiesta years ago, shows how close you are to the balloons and the sheer wonder of being right THERE. Until next year’s fiesta . . . (Photo originally taken in 1990, 35mm, scanned, and digitally developed)
/ I took this photo at the New Mexico State Fair, in the Indian Village in Albuquerque, New Mexico USA. This gentleman and many others were competing in the NM State Fair Pow Wow Dance Competition.. The Emotion & the Intensity, the Vibrant colors of their Costumes & Regalia, is Stunning!!
