View from the “Bishop’s Window” at the former Carthusian abbey of Maria Thron in Gaming, Austria. (pronounced Gahming) The Kartause dates back to 1330 in the time of Duke Albrecht II and became the largest Carthusian monastery in its area. The Gothic church, consecrated to the Assumption of Mary, was modernised in the early 1800s in the style of the baroque and is the site of the grave of its benefactor, Duke Albrecht II, his wife Johanna von Pfirt and their stepdaughter, Elisabeth of Bohemia. Emperor Josef II dissolved the monastery in 1792 and with the money from furnishings, paintings and financial resources, he founded hundreds of parishes throughout the area. The main chapel and monastic buildings fell into disrepair until the early 1900’s when they were sold to the Benedictines in Melk. Repairs were slow and by the Second World War, the Kartause was taken over by the Russians who destroyed many of the buildings and frescoes. In 1984, architect Walter Hildebrand purchased the property with a view to restore the buildings to their former glory. It has once again become a center for Catholic education and culture with The Franciscan University of Steubenville using it for their “Study Abroad” programme, as well as the Papal International Theological Institute for Studies of Marriage and Family. I visited the Kartause in 2003 and was very impressed with the ongoing restoration of frescoes in the church and surrounding walls which had been painted over by the Russian soldiers. The library, also known as “The Sistine Chapel of the North” has amazing ceiling frescoes created by the Bohemian painter, Wnezel Lorenz Rainer in the early 18th century.
