  • Caught this storm on the horizon on the way home tonight, just East of Okotoks, Alberta. It is reminiscent of some captures I have seen of hurricanes…. Hope none of our neighbors suffered any damage.

  • This is Vimy Ridg In Wateron Glacier National Park Located on the Canadian Side in Southern Alberta. / This National Park is a World Heritage Site and is also dedicated as Waterton International Peace Park / I have been told that this shot is rarely captured, due to the frequency of the winds around this area. My Aunt and My Grandmother have tried for years and never had the opportunity to capture this Mountain and its mirrored image before and they live here. / I have searched hundreds of Pictures and have seen only one single Mirrored Image of this Mountain on the Internet there has to be more I’m sure. I have been back several times to take more shots but the water was too choppy, as the winds are almost always blowing, I was Extremely fortunate to have captured this shot. / For more Historical Information on “Vimy Ridge” I found a site link below for you to check out. / Nikon D80 Nikor AFS ED 18-135mm Lens With Circular Polarizing Filter / 415 Views / /

Background Information: / Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway. It was named for Ebenezer William Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area. The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft). During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefield Parkway. The lake is fed by the Peyto Creek, which drains water from the Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield), and flows into the Mistaya River. This area offers a tremendous diversity of recreational and sightseeing opportunities. Lake Louise is home to one of North America’s finest downhill ski areas, and has numerous hiking and walking trails. The region abounds with spectacular scenery, from glaciers to waterfalls. The Village of Lake Louise is on the Trans-Canada Highway fifty-seven kilometers (thirty-five miles) west of Banff. / (http://www.discoverlakelouise.com) / Lake Louise is fed by glacial runoff from Victoria Glacier. Like many of the lakes in the Rockies the water is either deep green or blue. This is caused by fine sediments called “rock flour” floating in the water. Rock flour is fine powdery rock that has been crushed and ground by a glacier. Lake Louise is a beautiful green color, but Peyto Lake, (further north on the Icefields Parkway) is a rich baby blue. / (http://albertatravel.org) / / / Mounted Print / Photo taken with Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT; / Shutter speed 1/800 / Lens aperture F/8 / Focal length 18mm / ISO400 / 420 views as of December 9, 2009

  • ARCHITECTURE IS WHERE YOU FIND IT / Architecture is to do with the designing of buildings and structures, but in its broader meaning it also includes the design of our complete built environment. It can be found in outback areas, on mountain peaks, almost anywhere on the land, even on the sea in the form of oil rigs and it surrounds us in our places of abode. We tend to take it for granted and complain when its appeareance doesn’t suit our taste. Architecture provides us with shelter, places to work, gives us points of reference in our urban wilderness, but most important of all, it provides a fundamental basis for the way we live. Architecture is ephemeral, can be a thing of great beauty, and its elements can be pillaged and used as building blocks by successive generations. Past civilizations are often known through their achievements in architecture and certain works have become cultural, political and artistic icons. Presumably a family once lived in this little house at Fernie, British Columbia. It now stands derelict and isolated, yet it seems to exist as a monument to the toil of hard working rural people anywhere. The image was captured during summer 2008 towards the end of a photographic journey through the Canadian Rockies. Thanks for taking the time to view my photos and feel free to comment. You are welcome to visit my photography website My most recent publication ‘ARCHITECTURE WITH CHARACTER’ includes images of this rural house. Click on image below for a preview.

The Fenland Trail in the morning affords a good opportunity to see wildlife moving around the marsh and river areas. This trail connects to the Bow River Trail which actually goes all the way into Banff townsite proper. If you have time, this is a nice easy walk to get to this area without actually having to drive to get to it. The Vermillion Lakes are slightly to the west of the Fenland Trail and you can either walk to them or drive your car and use the pulloffs available. It’s a bit noisy being so close to the Trans Canada Hwy, but the scenery more than makes up for it. Throughout the day you’ll see numerous waterfowl frequenting the area. The real draw, however, is in the evening when the winds are low and the water is still, making the lake surface a mirror reflection of the now beautifully lit Mt Rundle in the background.
