  • These beautiful birds don’t usually come too close but this one was really eye=balling me as it swooped around the ship. They are my favourite albatross, so I was very pleased to get such a close shot.

  • Beautiful portrait of a Seagull taken in Santa Monica, CA. I never knew that the iris of a seagull has much detail as the human eye does. This could possibly be an Albatross. HDR Images / Prague Images / Aviation Related Images

  • Here’s a two years old painting of mine. For those not familiar with the poem in question, this illustrates Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem, The Ancient Mariner”. The verse illustrated is this one: `God save thee, ancient Mariner ! / From the fiends, that plague thee thus !- / Why look’st thou so ?’-With my cross-bow / I shot the ALBATROSS. (S.T. COLERIDGE – 1798) Anyone interested in reading the entire poem may find it here

  • On our first trip to New Zealand we Visited the Royal Albatross breeding colony in Dunedin. Although it was great, we were a little disappointed that we were so far away from the birds. After discussing New Zealand adventures with Larry Davis, and seeing his Albatross photo’s we decided that an ‘Albatross Encounter’ from Kaikoura would be the way to go. On our third visit, this time the weather was right and this time we were not disappointed. These birds are incredible! I believe this is a Wandering albatross (As distinct from the Royal Albatross). I hope I have the name right – we saw so many! See more of my albatross photo’s here

  • This is a Campbell Island Black Browed Albatross soaring behind our small expedition vessel. We were making the long sea crossing of the Southern Pacific Ocean from the southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island to far flung sub-Antarctic Campbell Island which belongs to New Zealand. Accompanying our small ship, several species of albatross and petrels wheeled in updrafts as they soared effortlessly on their great outstretched wings. I never tired of watching them as they watched us. Upon fledging, young albatrosses embark on a long journey across the Southern Ocean. Spreading their massive wings to take off into a freshening wind, the young birds will spend many years at sea before they mature and return to land to breed. The Black Browed Albatross has been placed in the Threatened category, being listed as Endangered. Sadly, this magnificent bird’s greatest enemy is longline fishing. Many albatross drown when attempting to catch bait fish attached to long line fish hooks.

  • Feature Image – A Beautiful Blur Group / Feature Image – SEA Group The very moody instrumental piece of music by Fleetwood Mac “Albatross” comes to mind whenever I am on a beach watching waves. Combine the two and your heart sings with the rhythm of the surf as it reaches land and crashes to the beach. Listen to the music – Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Albatross’. I love watching waves, I love looking through them and seeing how the light plays with the colour. I will take pictures of waves until my last shuttering. I would love to learn how to grab the perfect formation. Something to aim for. / From a day at Cape Dissapointment State Park WA USA Aug 2008 Nikon D40X / Nikkor 70-300mm lens
