  • Alaska North Star Brilliant Skies Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved “Why would I wonder how you are about today and yesterday a wondering smile or frown because I cannot know and still I want to… But it is not you or your fault, nor is it mine, to accuse myself of anything but being me. And where, if ever, did you get that smile and laugh a little at the things so many people say… And how could I want to hear it (again and again)... Is it absurd for feelings to beg to be felt or do they, or is it just my mind reeling in the years trying not to forget, or yours (your mind is questioning the reason why you can’t touch my hand or feel the warm that is me and know the face again you see always – each night in your dreams when you are drifting in between – you wonder where has she gone) So I search myself to know the answer and often ask for no reason but the asking if I can even know what it was that made some far off voice a reason to ask yourself again can there really be love in this world (love outside of you) love that makes the birds sing. You ask: (what holds the sky up under the wind so that we know what blue is and how it feels to lose the sun when the rain washes it away and makes us blue with all its splatters)... no I can’t explain it, for it is something we have to feel (so far away)... How can I ever tell you I wonder sometimes how you are (what you are doing) if you feel loved … because I can’t see you doesn’t mean you’re not there or not here inside me in every little corpuscle that dances in my veins and keeps me alive to wonder some more… How do you feel (I remember)” by Peter Anthony Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi

  • The medicine of Moose is primal feminine energy and the magic of life and death ~ a positive force representing a willingness to “Tell the World” about her feelings. Self~Esteem, the joyfulness that comes with accomplishment without the need for approval and the enjoyment of sharing that comes from the deepest part of one’s being is the wisdom of Moose. / Moose medicine people have the ability to know when to use the gentleness of Deer and when to activate the stampede of Buffalo, as they understand the balance between giving orders to get things done, along with the willingness to do things themselves. / So, if you have happened upon this photo and itmakes you feel good, you have probably accomplished something on your journey…broken a habit, completed a goal or task, or youhave a new sense of self that you have fought hard to earn. You should be feeling harmonious pride and recognize those who helped you attain your process and progress. This photograph was taken, as is, at an undisclosed location in Alaska, by my brother (who wishes to remain anonymous). Alison

  • Forest fires and heat throughout Alaska have obscured the Chugach range and limited opportunities to practice landscape photography. I learned much after posing the query, What makes a good landscape photo?, but must wait to work on better foregrounds. However, upon reflection, ahem, other photographic opportunities exist. Nikon D200, Nikkor 70-300mm VR, f/5.6, 1/250, -0.67 exposure compensation, 85mm focal length, ISO 100, 2-stop ND grad, Speedlight SB-800 with diffuser bounced off white wall, Manfrotto tripod. Oh, and a patient poppy plucked from the wilds of Alaska. (If that’s not too anthropomorphic for you.)

  • This whale was bubble feeding all by himself in the entrance to our harbor. Lone bubble feeding is just not something you get to see very often and was a first for me! He also got so close to the rocks, with one flipper in the air, that he had to have been getting quite a belly or back rub at the same time! They go in close to get all the little feed hiding in the kelp. We enjoyed watching his feeding techniques for about a half an hour. June 14, 2009 / D90 18-200mm Lens / Water leveled and cropped. Increased contrast.

  • Featured in Mountains Across the Globe – October 23, 2009 / Featured in Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams – September 24, 2009 Showing the many beautiful colors in Denali National Park, Alaska. This area is awe inspiring. The mountains, the wildlife, the very hospitable people are all worth the trip alone. This was the highlight of my tour of Alaska. / / Canon EOS Rebel XTi; Canon 17-85mm lens / 1/1000 sec.; F/8; 56mm; ISO400 / Dynamic Photo HDR / Denali National Park, Alaska / 131 views as of December 4, 2009

  • This trumpeter swan stretched its wings while its mate (hidden in tall grass) preened. The trumpeter swan is a majestic bird, with snowy white feathers; jet-black bill, feet, and legs; and an 8-foot wingspan. At close range, a thin orange-red line can be seen on the lower part of the bill. Trumpeter swans establish life-long mates at approximately 3 years of age and nest the following year. Sometime between late March and early May, they build their nests, choosing locations close to water. Today, the central Alaska population winters from southeastern Alaska along coastal British Columbia south to the mouth of the Columbia River on the southern border of Washington State. Nikon D200 and Nikkor 70-300mm, 270mm, at f/9 and 1/640 sec, -0.3ev, IS0 200. Converted from 12-bit RAW to jpeg using Capture NX 2.1, manual exposure, spot metering, Manfrotto tripod.
