  • The medicine of Moose is primal feminine energy and the magic of life and death ~ a positive force representing a willingness to “Tell the World” about her feelings. Self~Esteem, the joyfulness that comes with accomplishment without the need for approval and the enjoyment of sharing that comes from the deepest part of one’s being is the wisdom of Moose. / Moose medicine people have the ability to know when to use the gentleness of Deer and when to activate the stampede of Buffalo, as they understand the balance between giving orders to get things done, along with the willingness to do things themselves. / So, if you have happened upon this photo and itmakes you feel good, you have probably accomplished something on your journey…broken a habit, completed a goal or task, or youhave a new sense of self that you have fought hard to earn. You should be feeling harmonious pride and recognize those who helped you attain your process and progress. This photograph was taken, as is, at an undisclosed location in Alaska, by my brother (who wishes to remain anonymous). Alison

  • Moose calves are born with their eyes open, if they live through their first month, it’s most likely they will survive to become an adult. Moose are herbivores and they are the largest antlered animals of all ~ with the males only growing them (rarely a female with hormone imbalances will grow them as well). The moose has no enemies except the grizzly bear and humans. / Moose medicine invites you to explore new depths of awareness and sensitivity within yourself and within your environment. • This photo has not been cross-processed properly, apparently. However, I’d never heard of cross-processing until recently. I’ve read that the term started by developing color print or slide film in the wrong chemicals – for example, color negative film in slide chemicals or slide film by the color negative process. This causes wild color and contrast shifts and requires lots of trial and error. for more, see Dana DiPasquale’s forum page. Apparently a group exists for cross-processing experts, as well. / / However, playing with the RGB channels certainly stretched my tendency for more realistic, staid photos! I played with this photo last night using Sue Wickham’s method and the tutorial that Mary Campbell posted. I used curves and RGB channels in Photoshop and Nikon’s Capture NX2.1 software. / / This is the Capture NX2 version, with a bit of a vignette blur from efex. • Forest fires and heat throughout Alaska have obscured the Chugach range and limited opportunities to practice landscape photography. I learned much after posing the query, What makes a good landscape photo?, but must wait to work on better foregrounds. However, upon reflection, ahem, other photographic opportunities exist. Nikon D200, Nikkor 70-300mm VR, f/5.6, 1/250, -0.67 exposure compensation, 85mm focal length, ISO 100, 2-stop ND grad, Speedlight SB-800 with diffuser bounced off white wall, Manfrotto tripod. Taken on 9-14-2009 from the paved lookout at mile 101.7 of the Glenn Highway. Matanuska Glacier is a valley glacier and is located in the heart of the Chugach Mountains. It is 27 miles long by 4 miles wide and is the largest glacier in the United States that is accessible by car. Some 18,000 years ago, the glacier stretched all the way to the Palmer area. The meltwater drains into a stream which is the source of the Matanuska River. This is an active glacier that expands around a foot a day. An unusual feature of the glacier is the presence of a weather hole (an area/location that receives calmer weather than the surrounding area … thunderstorms often miss, or near which approaching storms often dissipate) making the weather unusually clear and sunny. Information gathered from the The Milepost – Alaska 1995 edition and Wikipedia via the internet on 10-02-2009.
