Prairie Marmots….. Generally large ground squirrels, those most often referred to as marmots tend to live in mountainous areas such as the Alps, Carpathians, Tatra, and Pyrenees in Europe, the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada in the United States, and Northern Canada. However, the groundhog is also properly called a marmot, while the similarly-sized but more social prairie dog is not classified in the genus Marmota but in the related genus Cynomys. Marmots typically live in burrows, and hibernate there through the winter. Most marmots are highly social, and use loud whistles to communicate with one another, especially when alarmed. Marmots mainly eat greens. They eat many types of grasses, berries, lichens, mosses, roots and flowers.

I kept trying to figure out why Mother Bluebird was in a tizzy. She kept calling out in a frenzied way. And then I spotted the cause of her alarm, a big hawk sitting on a low limb of the elm tree in my back yard. That spells trouble for little bluebird fledglings trying to find their way in the big world, and Mama was saying, “Be careful; the hawk’s on the lookout for lunch!” Apparently, her cries were beneficial because the hawk lost interest and flew away.

I forgot to put in my Journal entry entitled ‘Darwin, the trip from hell’ that our first night at the hotel, the fire alarm went off at 2am,,,,, then a powerful and booming voice came over the PA system telling everyone to stay calm, but be prepared to evacuate!! stay calm, at 2am, being awoken from our sleep, they could ask us to stay calm!!! at least we didnt have any luggage at that stage, so I grabbed my camera (the first thing I did!) and wondered out, to be confrounted by a few sleepy souls that were rubbing their eyes, and trying to make sense of it all!!! anyway I took this snap, of the nearest exit sign,,, after about 5minutes, the loud booming voice told us, that they had rectified the problem, and that we could all go back to bed!!!

This cockerel was actually in a children’s zoo @ The Welsh Mountain Zoo at Colwyn Bay, North Wales (Well worth a visit if you’re in the area BTW) He kept crowing and moving around. It took me quite a few shots to capture him fully in frame in mid-crow… I was quite pleased with the sharpness and character of this shot – What do you think?

This alarm was on the wall in one of the rooms, obviously like an old servants calling bell it would have been used to indicate that one of the senior members of staff here required the presence of whichever member of staff occupied this room, most likely a nurse or matron or similar.

This is the Temple Church in Bristol. / Temple Church is so-called because the original church was built by the Knights Templar. The Templars, a society of soldier-monks, was formed during the time of the Crusades to defend the Holy Sepulchre and guard pilgrims travelling to Jerusalem. They had been granted land across the Avon from Bristol by Robert, Earl of Gloucester in the mid-12th Century. HDR and colour work in PS. Comments welcome! Thanks, / Al
