  • Lord of the sky – actually, though, a dummy but indicative of what is worn. Tremendous day – brilliant flights and lots to see. Here’s the Infrared Version

  • Helicopters are used often in reconnaissance as well as search and rescue so apart from their destructive capability, they also deliver lives. This one definitely had a mean look to it, but you can thank infrared and the lightsmith for that. It’s part of the Singapore bunch (I believe) and has been a great help over the years.

  • Actually the tail rotor of a helicopter set against a threatening background.

  • Its…... a helicopter.

  • The joy of flight.

  • All eyes were upwards at the Avalon Airshow. It was a great day for those interested in aviation – and a great day for those interested in telephoto lenses!

  • It sucks the water up through the tube then releases it on the bushfire. A big parade of emergency service vehicles (you can just see a fire engine) drove past in honour of all the work done to fight the bushfires, and three helicopters and a plane flew about – all did their part in the great war on flame. In the background you can see the You Yangs.

  • / / Avalon Airshow Action display of the Hercules C130 and troops. The incredible maneuverability of this cumbersome looking aircraft makes it one of the RAAF’s favourites. Celebrating 50 years of service. / / / /

  • The World’s only formation wingwalking team is the best loved civilian air display act in Europe

  • Last weekend saw yet more ecstatic spectator reactions to XH558’s appearances, this time at the Bournemouth Air Festival and Shoreham Airshow on both Saturday and Sunday. Both events reported record crowds, with an estimated 730,000 people lining the seafront at Bournemouth across both days. Adding to this, the spectator numbers at Shoreham, and an estimate of those who saw XH558 during her transit following the South Coast between the two venues, I reckon that XH558 was seen by over one million people last weekend, a new record for VTST. So far, this year XH558 has now been seen by about 2.5 million people at events around the UK, not counting all those who have looked skywards to see her in transit around the country.
