  • Airmid was created in honor of one of my grandmothers. I used a vintage photo of her, taken when she was 18. She was sitting in bright sunlight, wearing a dark colored dress with a sailor collar. I loved the high contrast of her face and how she is looking down, so I cropped her head and printed it on paper we made from cornhusks. Also included in this piece is potpourri, acrylic paint, and a wand constructed of a branch, raffia, wire, and glass beads and gems. From my Goddess series, Airmid is the Celtic goddess of herbal healing, and she stood guard over the Well of Slaine in Ireland. She is said to live in the mountains of Ireland yet today, healing faeries and humans who need her help. Water is her element.

  • On the Hill of Slaine, we found so many beautiful views. The history and mythology associated with the Hill is profound and filled with Spiritual meaning. It is here that Diancecht slew his son Miach out of jealousy of his healing powers, striking him three times in the head, and with a fourth blow splitting his skull asunder. He then buried his sons body in order to create chaos in the healing powers which Miach had. His sister, Airmid, discovered where his body was buried, and saw that out of the ground had sprouted three hundred and sixty five herbs, each one endowed with healing powers for the three hundred and sixty five nerves of the body. She harvested the healing herbs which had sprouted from the ground, and spreading her cloak out, sorted the herbs according to the body parts they healed. When her father Diancecht heard of this, he became consumed with jealousy, for in death his son still rivaled him in healing. He immediately went to Airmid, took the cloak with herbs, and scattered them to the Four Winds. It is said that if Diancecht had not performed this atrocious act, humankind would be immortal. Airmids healing well is located close to Hill of Slaine, along with the tumulus of King Slaine, leader of the Firbolgs.
