  • A Boomerang in Action. / A total of 250 Boomerangs were built by Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation, and due to the later availability of fighter aircraft from the UK and USA, the Boomerang was not required to face the technically superior Japanese fighters at high altitude. Instead it was employed in Army co-operation duties where its maneuverability at low level and 20mm Cannon made it ideal for strafing and target marking. • Pilot Officer Richard Hillary RAFVR was a member of 603 (City of Edinburgh) Sqdn and the painting is of him being shot down in a Spitfire MkI, ser.no.X4277, code XT-M, by Hauptmann Eric Bode flying a Messerschmitt Bf109E of the German Luftwaffe on the 3rd September 1940 during the Battle of Britain. / / The fuel tank of Hillary’s aircraft was hit by cannon fire and almost immediately engulfed the cockpit in flames. Hillary had difficulty in sliding back his canopy and quickly lost consciousness due to the pain of his burns. The next thing he was aware of was descending over the sea beneath his parachute. This action took place between 20,000 and 25,000ft over the Thames Estuary, north of Margate. Pilot Officer Hillary was rescued by the Margate lifeboat just after 10am and taken to Margate Hospital suffering serious burns to his face, hands and legs. He was later treated by the renowned plastic surgeon Archibald McIndoe. / / P/O Hillary died, aged 23, along with his navigator-radio operator, Wilfrid Fison in a flying accident on the 8th January 1943, whilst on a night training flight from RAF Charter Hall, Berwickshire, Scotland. His B of B score was 5 enemy a/c, 2 probables and 1 shared. / 603 were the top scoring Sqdn during the B of B.

  • From my recent trip to Oregon. I cannot describe to you in words how big this hangar is….its mindblowing. Check out this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tillamook_Air_Museum ________ / “Tillamook Air Museum is an aviation museum located south of Tillamook, Oregon at Tillamook Airport . The museum is housed in a former military blimp hangar, called “Hangar B”, which is the largest clear-span wooden structure in the world.[1] Tillamook Air Museum has been described as “one of the country’s top private World War II aircraft collections”.[2] Constructed by the US Navy in 1942 during World War II for Naval Air Station Tillamook, the hangar building housing the aircraft is 1,072 feet long and 296 feet wide, giving it over six acres of space. It stands at 192 feet tall. The doors weigh 30 tons each and are 120 feet tall. Hangar “B” is one of two that were built on the site originally, Hangar “A” was destroyed by fire in 1992.”- Wikipedia

  • This is an older image that I have been meaning to post. It was taken in 2006 during the airshow at Naval Air Station Oceana (Master Jet Base). Just several weeks later the F-14D Tomcat’s performed their last flight, as they were retired and scrapped. Planes shown in this image are from Strike Fighter Squadron VF-31, also known as the Tomcatters. (Based on Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt – CVN71).

  • Noseart of a B-17G called “Liberty Belle” (SN 44-85734). This plane has been restored and travels to various airports to give spectators 30-45min rides. It is quite a sight to see and hear the engines come to live and see this beast take flight. Read more on her history here

  • Color pencil on 100 weight Bristol smooth paper, sprayed with lacquer. Armed with only cameras, a bigger Rolls Royce Merlin engine and a larger oil tank, this fighter’s only defense was speed; get in and get out. Photo planes such as this, played a vital role to the war effort in providing target information and damage assessment. There were two color schemes used by the British, desert pink and azure blue. The pink was used for hazy days and the blue was used for high altitude. Later in the war armed photo planes became available as new radical engines were produced such as the Rolls Royce Grifton. /

  • Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, Flying Tiger. I’m usually not a fan of having portions of the aircraft chopped in my images, but on this one I find it quite acceptable.

  • Two aircraft cross paths during a storm….....

  • Another shot from a recent airshow in my local area. I loved how all these people were milling around these lovely old warbirds, just looking…. inspecting….. / This one is a “Trojan”.
