I read this book called ‘Dogs and demons’ last year, in which Alex Kerr bemoans the Japanese governments pitiful treatment of the countryside. Aparrently, the construction industry is given free reign all over the country, so picturesque mountains and rivers are blasted, filled and razed to make way for roads and buildings which, for the most part, nobody uses. The terrible irony is that these projects do nothing for the economy – if anything they lose money, AND they’re destroying the tourist industry – the one industry which could be truely lucrative for japan. I haven’t seen any of this for myself (although i hope to someday soon), but this piece is a little response to Kerr’s book. You can’t see it very clearly here, but the bin is filled with typically Japanese detritus (hello kitty, dried squid, sushi etc). I hope it also makes a universal point about the very human tendency to both romanticise the natural world and to simultaneously debase it.

In this painting I have endeavored to reduce the landscape down to its absolute minimum, focusing purely on the line of salt-bush on the horizon, with one solitary bird hovering in the air, to give the impression of the raw empty heat of a mid day summer where nothing stirs until l the cool of the evening. . . One Heart ~ Hamoa Beach Maui Hawai’i One of my favourite places to be in the morning or evening, on this lovely black sand beach beneath the Keawe trees….it is so beautiful and the sand is luxurious! “Was it the wind that whispered your name or did you call to me from the depths of my soul? As the wind descends from the heavens and cools me with its gentle touch, your love surrounds me, / flows through me, / having no end, / no seam between your heart and mine. / We are one heart and one soul. A feeling of the greatest love encircles us both. / No matter how far apart we are, this longing burns inside of me for your arms to encircle me and your lips gently upon my lips. / Then I am complete. So hold me my love and never let me go. / Even if tonight it is only in your dreams, / because I am holding you close to me as I drift into a dream of you my love” / ~ Poetry by David Stanley Bell

This image was shot using a LOMO Action Sampler and 400 ASA Superia Fuji Film hence the slight grain. Lomo Action Sampler is best used for action shots. This is not an action shot however, i really like it. Other shots using the lomo action sampler One-second has been neatly dissected into four composite parts and lined up in perfect order to give you one shaky piece of 2×2 sampled action. / Tis more than a photograph and not quite a movie, you’ve got a permanent documentation of a snippet taken from your very own existence somewhere in the time-space continuum. / Tis also one wacky piece of photographic equipment, tis a real camera which consists of a tacky plastic box with four lenses strapped to the front, and inside are a few springs and cogs that reluctantly turn a full circle when you press the shutter release. / By some strange coincidence a standard boring old 35 mm film fits neatly into this box. Each time you hit the shutter release, despite the inferior quality of the lenses, light actually exposes the film at quarter-of-a-second intervals. / As soon as it’s bright enough the Action Sampler’s lenses go into action, giving you unexpected colours, haze and blur and a whole new world of shapes that’ll blow your mind. / The Action Sampler is not a finely tuned piece of apparatus made only of the finest in hand-crafted modern materials, it’s made of plastic. It is not a precision instrument with settings for the slightest nuance in aperture and lighting, it won’t even take a flash and the lenses are moody little beasties, reluctant to let any light get to the film at all.
