  • The Marquesas or traditionally called “Te Fenua ‘Enata” or “Te Henua Kenana” respectfully, meaning “The land of men”. The Marquesas Islands are the island group farthest from any continent in the world, lying between 400 and 600 miles (600 and 1,000 km) south of the equator and approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) northeast of Tahiti. (Wikipedia) A island that still holds many mysteries within its landscape!

  • 10×14 watercolor. Available. Gladiolus (from Latin, the diminutive of gladius, a sword) is a genus of flowering plants in the iris family (Iridaceae). Sometimes called the sword lily, the most widely-used English common name for these plants is simply gladiolus (plural gladioli or gladioluses). / Description / The genus Gladiolus contains about 260 species, of which 250 are native to sub-Saharan Africa, mostly South Africa. About 10 species are native to Eurasia. There are 160 species of Gladiolus endemic in southern Africa and 76 in tropical Africa. The species vary from very small to the spectacular giant flower spikes in commerce. These attractive, perennial herbs are semihardy in temperate climates. They grow from rounded, symmetrical corms, that are enveloped in several layers of brownish, fibrous tunics. Their stems are generally unbranched, producing 1 to 9 narrow, sword-shaped, longitudinal grooved leaves, enclosed in a sheath. The lowest leaf is shortened to a cataphyll. The leaf blades can be plane or cruciform in cross section. The fragrant flower spikes are large and one-sided, with secund, bisexual flowers, each subtended by 2 leathery, green bracts. The sepals and the petals are almost identical in appearance, and are termed tepals. They are united at their base into a tube-shaped structure. The dorsal tepal is the largest, arching over the three stamens. The outer three tepals are narrower. The perianth is funnel-shaped, with the stamens attached to its base. The style has three filiform, spoon-shaped branches, each expanding towards the apex. (information from Wikipedia) Complete 2008

  • Beauty is Eternally Free / Hamoa Beach Maui Hawai’i I picked some fresh Plumeria blossoms and a branch of blooming Bougainvillea and tossed them onto the luxurious black sand of Hamoa Beach and was only able to get a couple of shots when a wave came in and carried them out to sea. Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved “Hidden behind the veil of mystery, / Beauty is eternally free from the slightest stain of imperfection. From the atoms of the world, / He created a multitude of mirrors; / into each one of them / He cast the image of His Face; / To the awakened eye, / anything that appears beautiful is only a reflection of that Face. / Now that you have seen the reflection, hurry to its Source; / In that primordial Light the reflection vanishes completely. Do not linger far from that primal Source; / When the reflection fades, you will be lost in darkness. / The reflection is as transient as the smile of a rose; / If you want permanence, / turn towards the Source; / If you want fidelity, / look to the Mine of faithfulness. / Why tear your soul apart over something here one moment / and gone the next?” ~ by Jami ~ Translation by Andrew Harvey and Eryk Hanut Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi

  • The hike up to Sentinel Dome in Yosemite National Park is very beautiful and very rewarding. The 360 degree views that can be seen of the surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains are absolutely breathtaking. This image was captured on a very late afternoon with the setting sun casting sidelight on the pines, domes and snow-capped peaks in the distance. All content & images © Stephen Vecchiotti. • Haleakala Crater in Maui, Hawaii is actually an extinct volcano resembling in many ways the surface of the moon. As a matter of fact, US astronauts have actually done training here. The long tedious ride to the top ascends from sea level to over 10,000 feet in elevation, passing through several climate zones and varied scenery and it is very difficult to actually believe that you are in Hawaii. The reward is when you reach the crater itself, located in Haleakala National Park is well worth it and is as surreal as any place on earth. Perfectly clear days are far and uncommon and I was extatic when I got here to find that it was crystal clear. I had visited on previous occasions when it was rainy and foggy with zero visability much to my dismay. To sum it up, this wonder is a true sight to behold and one of my favorite places in the world to shoot. Hiking through the crater itself, which i have done is a one of a kind experience. I hope you enjoy this image as much as I do. All content & images © Stephen Vecchiotti. You may not use any images in any way without written consent from artist. All Rights Reserved.
