Baobab Tree, Kilimanjaro Safari. Orlando, Florida, 2009. © 2009 J.J. Taylor, All Rights Reserved. I was traveling on a Kilimanjaro Safari tour vehicle in Animal Kingdom when I made this image. The tree and branches are odd and creepy, so I wanted that feeling conveyed in the finished work. I created a monochrome cyan tinting that works for me.

Bushmen (San) of Namaqualand, needing quivers for their poisoned arrows, cut branches from the picturesque ‘tree aloe’ that grows all over the western reaches of the Northern Cape and in southwestern Namibia. They hollowed out the branch’s fibrous interior, sealed the bottom and attached a carrying strap. To this day the tree is known as the ‘kokerboom’ or ‘quiver tree’. The Kokerboom, or Aloe dichotoma, is a slow-growing and elegantly shaped aloe. It grows like a tree and can grow up to 8 metres. It is smooth-barked with branches forming a rounded crown. The leaves are greyish-green and the flowers are bright yellow.
These wonderful Quiver trees grow in the North Western Cape. This one was captured in the late afternoon at Kammieskroon, Namaqualand. They make one stop – and smile! EOS Canon 40D; Tameron zoom lens.
