A lovely mountain gorilla in Rwanda, it was such a wonderful experience to meet him. He is one of 380 left in Rwanda and his name is Ntakibazo. He is part of the Umubano Group, meaning “neighborliness”. Umubano has 9 individuals: 1 Silverback; 1 Sub adult male; 3 Adult females and 4 Babies. Led by Charles, the dominant silverback, Umubano was formerly a part of the Amahoro group. As Charles matured into a silverback of the same rank as Ubumwe, he could not stand being given orders and decided to stage a fight and challenge Ubumwe. The fight went on for weeks and then months. Finally, Charles managed to snatch from Ubumwe a few females and formed his own group. Since then, he has commanded respect and recognition from Ubumwe.

June 2007 I’m on a roll with mixed mediums! This one is a mix of calico, hessian, shellac, paints, string… I have tried to capture the essence and textures of Africa… It smells like Africa funny enough, could be attributed to the sage burning at the time of creation. Look out for the symbols… Table Mountain, Tribal Patterns, The bushveld, animals and animal totems. x Carmen

Oils on canvas. Cape Town, the city of my birth. Dusk falling and the lights are coming on under the shadow of the great mountain where I was born. When the ‘table cloth’ forms over the mountain, Van Hunks and the old devil are smoking their pipes like crazy in a never ending competition and the cloth of cloud falls over the table like a waterfall. (old legend). The sky is clear over the mountain here today and the sea becomes black and purple as the light shifts. The view is from Blauwberg Strand. Original oil painting is 30×40 inches. My greeting when I visited a Masai village alone. They were wonderful people, I will never forget them. / The light was very intense, and highlighted the vivid colours of their colourful costumes. Many of them still observe the old customs and maintain the traditional way of life.
