The jaguar is a near threatened species and its numbers are declining. Threats include habitat loss and fragmentation. While international trade in jaguars or their parts is prohibited, the cat is still regularly killed by humans, particularly in conflicts with ranchers and farmers in South America. The Missing Remaining White Rhinos / The White Rhino is believed to be on the brink of extinction. In April 2003 there were 30 rhinos. In 2006 there were only 4 confirmed animals but worryingly, recent fieldwork in 2008 has so far failed to find any presence of these four remaining White Rhinos. Could it be they are disguising themselves as common Zebra to avoid poachers? On the face of it a humorous image but in reality, another depressing effect man has had on the natural world. The Bateleur Eagle The Bateleur occurs throughout the savanna and open woodland regions of Africa south of the Sahara. In South Africa, the species once graced the skies of the Transkei, the Eastern Cape, the Karoo and the south Western Cape but sightings in these areas are no longer common. The Bateleur eagle eats carrion, reptiles, and small mammals like rats, / hedgehogs, squirrels or young hares. When attacking snakes, the bird raises its crest and spreads its wings. This, together with long, scaly legs, ensures that, should the snake strike, it will hit either feather or scales, neither of which will pass venom into the bird’s blood stream. The voice of the Bateleur eagle is quite distinctive. The most frequent consists of short repeated barks ‘kau-kau-kau’, followed by one or two long shouts of ‘koaagh’. In the wild this call is made while perched. Its scream of anger is completely different. 2006 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In the lowveld wildlife reserves, where the Bateleur probably occurs at maximum density in an ideal habitat, it is quite numerous. Outside of protected areas, the Bateleur is vulnerable to poisoned bait. The birds have been eradicated from virtually all South African farmland due to indiscriminate attempts to control jackal.

It inhabits all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South Africa. A group of meerkats is called a “mob”, “gang” or “clan”. A meerkat clan often contains about 20 meerkats at a time, but some super families have had 50 or more. This was taken at the Lion & Rhino Park in Johannesburg, South Africa. The same place Mischief was taken. While the brown lion cub was playfully naughty at 4 months old, this white lion cub could barely be bothered moving. He was 3 months old at the time. He and his 3 siblings were content sitting in the shade, watching the brown lion cubs kick up a dust storm around us. Amazing what 1 month can make to behavioural differences! All these cubs would have grown close to their full size by now and would be in the return to the wild program, teaching them how to hunt, kill and survive out there. The program is designed to help keep the white lion away from extinction, which sadly, it is dangerously close to at the moment. They live in heavy rain forests, and it is difficult for scientists to accurately estimate how many survive in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. / Female gorillas give birth to one infant after a pregnancy of nearly nine months. Unlike their powerful parents, newborns are tiny—weighing four pounds (two kilograms)—and able only to cling to their mothers’ fur. These infants ride on their mothers’ backs from the age of four months through the first two or three years of their lives.
