I have come to realise that I have an affliction. Every time I see a homeless but decent film camera, I have to pick it up, and often want to take it home. I volunteer at an op shop, and was looking at some there today; I was sorely tempted by a Minolta XG1 in very good condition – looked like it had hardly been used. It’s not as if I use a film camera much any more, but seeing an instrument such as that, in very good condition, just contorts my camera-loving gland. I’ve never been, or desired to be, a collector, but I can feel a growing desire to hoard these obsolescent devices. If it were Canon FD mount gear, I would probably not hesitate at all, but anything else would be an indulgence. In contrast, I know that a 450D, 5D or whatever, would be a nice thing to own and use, but it just doesn’t give me the same frisson that even a relatively recent oldie does. [Anyone with an unwanted Hass, Contax, Nikon, etc – BM me!] Anyone else have this trouble?
