  • Colored Pencil, original available / GODDESS OF SMALL THINGS Who cares for all beings, including the plain, non – descript, or annoying creatures everyone else ignores, drives away, or attempts to destroy? I think there needs to be a special goddess dedicated to this purpose alone. She will be the goddess who inspires us to notice the quiet child in a classroom, to acknowledge and respect the shy or awkward person nobody else bothers with. Those who honor this goddess will be recognized by random acts of kindness and senseless gestures of mercy. Devotees will capture and release the ladybugs that accidentally fly indoors during late autumn – or let them sleep in peace right through ‘till spring, snuggled in a corner of the window sill. They’ll be the persons who don’t recoil, but instead admire the plain brown snakes undulating gracefully across trails on warm spring and autumn days. A universal, daily prayer of this Goddess cult will be the ritual of feeding the nameless, drab birds as well as their more glamourous cousins. This Goddess of Small Things will be a guardian of all life, not just the colorful, dramatic forms.; she won’t pick and choose. We are surrounded by creatures deserving our tolerance, if not protection. The field mice and voles falling into basement window wells, nameless brown birds pecking for seed in the ice, non- descript beetles, mangy stray dogs and flea bitten feral cats. Who watches over the almost invisible little creatures sharing our world as they go about the daily business of crossing busy streets, avoiding predators, traps, and poison? The Goddess of Small Things is another name for the gentle heart that respects and protects all the little creatures deemed commonplace, disposable, or undesirable. The smallest face and tiniest beating heart holds a sacred place in the hoop of life, and is entitled to compassion and respect. Text copyright Helena Nelson – Reed. • Perast, Montenegro.UNESCO protected. / . / feautured in The Mysterious Balkans group. / . Perast lies beneath the hill of St. Elijah (873 m), on a cape that separates the bay of Risan from the bay of Kotor (two smaller bays within the Boka Kotorska) and overlooks the Verige strait, the narrowest part of Boka. The average yearly temperature in Perasto is 18.3°C, and the number of sunny days is 240 (or around 2,500 sunny hours per year). Near Perast there are two small islands: one is called St. George island, and the other called Gospa od Škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rock), and each of them has a picturesque chapel. Gospa od Škrpjela is particularly interesting given that it is the only artificially built island in the Adriatic, with an area of 3,030 m² — it was built upon a rock (Škrpjel) after two venetian sailors from Perast found a picture of the Virgin Mary on it in 1452. Venice owned the city between 1420 and 1797. Perast was part of the Venetian Albania. The city’s sixteen Baroque palaces were mostly built in this period, too, as were its seventeen Catholic churches and two Orthodox churches. The old city does not have a defensive wall, but instead it has nine defensive towers, the most important of which is the tower of the Holy Cross. These were built by the navy of the Venetian Republic in the 15th and 16th centuries. / The two islands off Perast. Perast was at its peak in the 18th century under the Venetian Republic, when it had as many as four active shipyards, a fleet of around one hundred ships, and 1,643 residents. At that time the most beautiful buildings arose in this fortified town. Many ornate baroque palaces and magnificent dwelling-houses decorated the town of Perast, full of typical venetian architecture1. The population has since decreased to 430 in 1910 and around 360 today. The fleet was dissolved by the rise of the steam engine. From 1941 to 1943 during WWII, when Mussolini annexed the territories around kotor to the Kingdom of Italy. The area was part of the Italian Governorship of Dalmatia and was called “Provincia di Cattaro”. After 1945 Perast was restored to Yugoslavia and now is part of the independent Montenegro. In the last census there were: 146 Montenegrins, 101 Serbs, 29 Croats, 10 Yugoslavs, 3 Bosniaks, 1 Macedonian, others: 59,TOTAL: 349. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- Should I think to give it all-should i claim to give it all? / In a world where not much ever seems / To last long. / If the naked eye won’t see-if we make it i won’t see / It’s broken.

    by Anthony Begovic

    US$4.32–US$98.80

This husband and wife were originally from Chennai, India, but have moved to Alleppey in search of work. This doorway is their home. What struck me was how proud they were of each other, and how they showed immense affection and respect towards one another. They DEMANDED to be photographed. The nicest people we met in all of India … and quite possibly the nicest two people we’ve met anywhere (typical of Chennai people). I wish them the best of luck.

I posted a photograph of a Great Horned Owl a few days ago for a challenge, in commentary I asked Way of the Warrior if he could do his ‘magic touch’ on it and the collaboration began… / He did 4 beautiful edits with the 2 photos I sent him and this was my favorite! WindOwl is my ‘handle’, spirit name and who I aspire to be… / The Wind is a force of Nature, air in natural motion – an influential force or trend that touches everything in its path, sometimes a gentle breeze and other times, as a hurricane. / The Owl is a bird of prey, long associated with wisdom and truth, honoring intuition, using discernment, outsmarting deception and trusting first impressions. / Together, my intentions are ultimately aspiring to help others transition and transform into who they aspire to be… The Three Faces of Owl / The wisest of the bird clan, awakening to honor Grandfather Sun – then sleeping, while Mother Nature unleashes her wondrous glory, upon unseeing eyes and broken promises, from the gray matter, we Humans call Truth. Awakening once more to honor Grandmother Moon and discover the darkness is only feared by those afraid of their Self. tkrosevear Thanks to Tony for helping me to re-defining my intentions and Salute the Pack!

  • Heartstrings
    by ArtByDrew

    US$3.99–US$91.20

So many tugs on my heartstrings / I don’t know where to start / So try I will to list some things / These few I will impart / / The thickest string that tugs each day / Stroked gently by my wife / With love and passion she does play / The key note in my life / / Next comes the chord of parenthood / Three strings that harmonize / And since their birth I understood / Heaven’s not in the skies / / The oldest strings played as a pair / By my dear Mum and Dad / Ring notes of hope when in despair / Since I was just a lad / / So many other finer strings / Played by the world around / I hear with each new note it brings / Life’s song, the sweetest sound / / This fractal artwork was inspired by the word ‘heartstrings’ that I have heard since I was a tot. I have attempted to give a new spin on this word in both the artwork and poem. I have been a guitarist since I was seven, and it is with that perspective I give this old word new meaning. Strings that play the score of love. / / The fractal was created in Apophysis. The original is 6000×4800 pixels at 300 pixels per inch. The fractal gradient was created with ApoMap, a gradient editor commonly used with Apophysis. The gradient layer used as the background was created in Photoshop. Because the original is so large and difficult to see over the internet, I have included a couple of detail cutaways below. / / / / / /
