A little while ago I was contacted by Eliza Grey from the Advocate (the newspaper that services the North West coast of Tasmania) asking if I would be interested in participating in an article about RedBubble. Of course I was only too happy to oblige being as RedBubble itself and all you wonderful people in the RB community have helped me so much in my journey as a photographer. When the photographer from the Advocate came out to take a few pictures to accompany the article, I took him down to the boat ramp as the views down there are magnificent! I was a little apprehensive though… See, we were having a king tide at the time, and when he asked me if I would be game enough to go out to the end of the jetty which was all but underwater I had to think twice… It wasnt me I was concerned about, HE WANTED ME TO TAKE MY CAMERA OUT THERE!!! It all turned out well in the end though, both myself and my beloved Sami survived the experience and below is the result. Many thanks to RedBubble and every-wonderful-one who has made me feel so welcome here.

This reminds me of a story that was told to me during vacation bible school this week. The pastor told a story of a honorable man and his good friend. The story went like this “there was this man that had a good friend and this man was always breaking the law. His friend was a lawyer who was always there for him. His friend would come everytime that he needed him to bail him out of trouble. His friend was a great lawyer. His friend warned him and said look man you are going to have to straighten up and stop breaking the law because one day I won’t be there to help you and one day I will be a Judge. So, one day he went looking for his friend to help him. He looked and looked and looked and didn’t find him. He needed a good lawyer because he broke the law and he couldn’t find his good friend. Well, his good friend was now a Judge and he had to Judge him for his actions. You see Jesus is our good friend and Advocate. He is there for us through all of our trials and tribulations. And he intercedes for us and tells God about us all the time. He will one day be our Judge and judge us on what we did for his kingdom.” I love this story and I will be telling it to everyone that God puts in my path. I hope you liked the story. I hope you as well will pass it on. God Bless You…
A Devil’s Advocate Allow me to be the Devil’s advocate. / To see things from the viewpoint / of God— Sure, the Devil is out there mocking me. / I have not gotten him back on my side, / yet. Ever since you ate from the Tree / of Good and Evil, you have been living through / both. You were not ready. / That was my only motive for wanting you / to wait. My Devil is the choices you make. / Yours / are the consequences. I had to stop you / before you tasted the fruit / of Life and Death. Do I need to explain? / You may think you can handle / the switch— The double vision— / This life / and the other. You took the smallest particle of matter. / Isolated it. Observed it. / Photographed it. Caught it in two places at once! / Then three, four, and more… / Now you come to know it as a wave. Present everywhere simultaneously. / Only the attention of an observer brings it / to a point— Kingdom of Heaven in a tiny seed. / Plant it in field, / a tree grows. Are you ready to know your being / beyond / what you observe— A conglomeration of surging particles? / One shiny moment / out of infinite entanglements? Are you prepared / to see my face? To take / my place? © Assef Al-Jundi

I want to thank everyone who offered their opinion about the police horses that I believed were in a harmful situation. They were in a hot parking lot in a strip mall without proper shade or water. I also have pictures of the police who laughed when I asked why they needed to patrol with horses. One policeman laughed and said, “Well it saves on high gas prices!” Their responses to my concerns were indifferent lacking the appropriate emotion when responding to legitimate questions and concerns about the horses’ safety. I wrote the host of Voices for Animals, Lorie who is a tireless advocate of the neglect and abusive treatment of animals. In comparison, this situation is not as global or traumatic as the issues of abuse that she encounters every day. Lorie does not just observe animal cruelty, but is very proactive as a passionate animal activist. When she saw the photographs of these police horses, her response was “I need to have a statement included in those heart-breaking pics. Something simple will do. They are tragic.” Several months ago, Lorie (Crockpot) recommended that I read Karen Dawn’s “Thanking The Monkey”, a powerful, compelling and well argued, intellectually sound and compelling book that helps us rethink the way we treat animals. Jeffrey Masson, the bestselling author of When Elephants Weep and Dogs Never Lie About Love states that “It would be a hard heart that could put this book down without having old prejudices seriously shaken? Emily Deschanel, the star of Bones says, “I am a huge animal lover. Animals don’t have a human voice, so they can’t speak for themselves, but books can speak powerfully for them. Since I am also a passionate advocate of animals, I could write many essays on this subject. Another member of RB, migkats is an animal activist devoted to the protection of animals and a person I respect very much for the harsh reality she confronts everyday. I will ask her about this situation. I try to not act on impulse, but to reflect upon a situation like this and get feedback from others. It is my belief that these beautiful horses were mistreated and being there and experiencing their discomfort first hand allows me to offer a first hand account!!

Played with image, especially for Don. As you say, you can play and change things around and land up with umpteen different varieties, never knowing which you prefer. Anyway, here is one of them. Advocates Close ~ Original Image / Old Fishmarket Close / Fleshmarket Close /

This photograph of a grandmother and her two grandchildren reflect / the pain, struggle, unbearable hardship and grieving that characterize / most elders in African villages. Although, I traveled to Africa about twenty-five years ago, the burden on women through the generations / were etched in the many lines of their face reflecting a lifetime of sorrow and loss. Looking at these photos has evoked memories of / beautiful children with hopeful faces that faded over the years as a / consequence of emotional and physical burdens too heavy to carry / for any sentient soul. In a continent of 900 million people, women / account for half of the world’s population and half of its talent. The costs of not developing this talent are enormous. The inclusion of women in the male dominated African economy is essential for nations to embrace the global economy while achieving shared growth at home. / A group, 10,000 Women invest in education for women and believe / their actions may have the highest social and economic return / of any investment, when one considers the range of income and health / outcomes for such women and their families. Investing in girls’ / education leads to increased wages for individuals as well as faster / economic growth for a country. The organization pairs volunteer / sponsors to train women to read, write and learn tasks that can / generate income for their villages and families. The poor and / hopeless female villagers feel empowered and hopefully will not / suffer the despair reflected on the face of the elderly woman in / this photo who is responsible for the care of her grandchildren after their mother died of Malaria, one of the diseases that rob children of the care of their maternal and often paternal parent. In this case, the father worked to feed the family, but his efforts were inadequate given the resources he had to sustain their lives. He did not have enough / money to send his children to school, a scenario too often seen in Africa that creates the vicious cycle or poverty and death. Getta Rao Gupta, President of the International Center for Research / on Women, states that “We know that primary and secondary education for girls is crucial to their ability to shape the course of their lives. But for girls to succeed, the skills they gain in school must match the jobs available in today’s global marketplace. Yet That critical space – when girls transition from school to work – has been invisible to the financial and international development communities… alike and investments to ensure a smooth transition have been limited. More than survive, we want women to thrive.” Melanne Vereer Co-founder and Chair for Vital Voices Global / Partnership reinforces Gupta’s message when she says, “Around the world women leaders are increasingly driving economic, political and social progress. They are the catalysts of change of our time. We know from a growing body of research—from the World Bank to the World Economic Forum—that investments in women’s education and training pay significant dividends for society. Without women’s full participation, no country can prosper, but in order to tap their potential, women need the tools for effective leadership. There is no better investment for our world.” Reading many stories of women whose lives have changed dramatically / with the help of advocates to train them is a very positive step when / the problems facing African families seem to be / too overwhelming to surmount.
What you accept / I deny / What you deny / I accept / I will always be / at the opposite end / of your words. What you believe / I question…
I like discussing things and a good debate, but not to the point of yelling or arguing, or angering people, you learn nothing from angry words. But I at times I have found myself, not exactly contradicting people, but continually asking why? why not? how come? what if? whenever I discuss things with them. This poem is an exaggerated version of that.
This photo was taken circa 1900- in Advocate Harbour, NS. This was my great-grandparents home, then my grandmother, then my Mom’s home. Possibly, it was also my great-great grandparents home as well. I also lived there for 2 years when I was a child. / The picture depicts the style of many of the homes in this small village. It still stands today, virtually unchanged. / In the 1940’s, a small room was added to the left side, and it housed the very first telephone office for the village. My grandmother was the operator. / At the time of this photo, the village would have been very isolated. The nearest town would have been Parrsboro about 30 very tough land miles away. Most of the travel would have been by boat, to the various villages along the Fundy coast. My Great-Grandfather was a lighthouse keeper. He used boats for travel and work. / The sail boat.. / / The motor boat… /
I’ll steal your soul and fuck your mind…my beauty is only your weakness. Model: Me / Photographer: Me / Photo Editor: Me
This boat transported my great-grandfather during the latter part of his years as a light-house keeper on a small island in the Bay of Fundy. He was the lightkeeper on Isle Haute from 1904 until 1941 and would have travelled between the Island and Advocate Harbour about 13 miles away. Boats were the main mode of transportation in this area. The old Iron bridge survived until the 1980’s before it was replaced. Earlier in the century he would have used this boat as his transportation. /

This boat would have his main mode of transportation at this time. The boat is tied on the beach at the West Advocate. When the tide was full it would be fully afloat. The Island, which is hidden behind the boat would have been visible on a clear day. Later on he would have used his Motor Boat.
