Well I’m trying something new, I’ve posted some smalled sized version of a few of my favourite photos on flickr with direct links back to my Redbubble versions advertising them for sale, haven’t had many hits so far, but I’ll see how that goes in bringing a wider audience ot my portfolio and Red Bubble in general, hopefully it will work. Will just have to wait and see.

I have been lucky enough to win a few prizes around the traps, and the last one arrived on my doorstep a couple of days ago from the lovely people at Visible Dust, compliments of the Digital Image Cafe Cathy MacMillan – a co-owner with her husband Todd, asked me to write a small review of the product, so here it is, warts and all. I’m not all that good with words. I unpacked my Arctic Butterfly 724 Total Care Bundle with glee, knowing my trip to New Zealand had left my sensor with more dust bunnies than I cared to mention. What fabulous care this company takes with it’s accessories. Zippered tailor-made PVC bag for the Arctic Butterfly, with a solid case inside that, with the Arctic Butterfly nestling into a cut-out foam bed. The Sensor Loupe also has a wonderful tailor-made PVC container, and inside there are extras too! The Loupe itself is encased in a microfibre bag with a looped closure, there’s a separate microfibre cloth to clean the screen, and in a pocket on the other side is a cord to attach to the Loupe so you can wear it around your neck, I guess to stop it being dropped. (These people must know me too well!!) Each of the PVC bags also has a large clip so that you can hang your accessories from a convenient place, you could be a travelling sensor cleaner with a tool belt of Visible Dust tools. The focusing screen swab was my first test, so I opened up the camera by removing the lens, then used 2 drops of liquid on the swab, wiped it gently across both focusing screen and mirror, then checked the view with the lens back on. This made quite a huge difference to start with! I then tested the Arctic Butterfly. I loaded up the supplied batteries, took off the clear perspex lid, and turned it on. The whirling brush apparently picks up static so that it can clean off any contaminants. My sensor is a contaminant attractor, so I was hoping that we’d see a huge difference! The 20D has a very small sensor, and therefore the opening seems quite cramped. It’s easy though, and needless to say a single sweep of the brush was all that was necessary. It looks quite clean to me! Time to get out the Sensor Loupe! Whoa! What a fabulous accessory! You can see every millimetre of sensor, in bright clear light. What an innovation! Everyone who uses a DSLR needs one of these! Ok, the 20D sensor still appears to have a couple of smears, which is obvious from the use of the Sensor Loupe. It’s time to check out the sensor swabs. The supplied swabs are the 1.6X size, to suit the Canon 20D. It’s important to use the correct sized swabs. Three drops of sensor cleaning fluid – and leave it for a few seconds. Swab the sensor by using a single pass across it. Check with the Sensor Loupe, and voila! It’s clean, shiny and ready to go. It’s a complete and easy to use product, and I can highly recommend it! Documentation is attached to the boxes that contain the swabs, the liquid is supplied with a flyer to give the entire directions as well, and if in doubt, there’s a wealth of information on the webpage Great Christmas present, people!

I found the HTML and CSS available on the Redbubble Promote-Page earlier today. I copied it to MS Notepad … and smiled BIG. REALLY REALLY BIGGG. After picking the CSS to pieces (reducing all the double spaces to one, modifying the color, paddings, and margins then condensing all the details) and fiddling with the HTML … I now have my own private bubble . There’s only one small problem, and I wonder if the RB-coders are working on it: It’s only displays a set list of images, and it doesn’t randomise like the ‘Lovely Flash Widget Thing’ does. I reckon it could. I’d like to say I’m working on that, but I’d need a clone of myself who doesn’t need to work, sleep, eat nor drink, and that knows XML/RSS in-side-out. Part of me can see the answer, but I’m not even sure where to start … maybe with that RSS-button … Well, maybe someone else will get it before me and give me another BIG smile. Please. On with the promotion of purchasing my photography.

People can be either selfish or they practice too much self humility.. i think confidence is necessary to survive. One must learn how to be be thick-skinned sometimes and think like a businessman once in awhile.. we can’t just rely on mere word of mouth or just 1 website to promote our art. that’s just an excuse to be lazy. So unless we wanna die like all the great artists of the past, poor and acknowledged only after we die, we should do something for ourselves already!! Do some networking. Make more friends. Get more contacts. Know more suppliers/printers/artists. Start a joint exhibition. Print some namecards. Form a group in great and “in” networking places such as Facebook and Myspace or something. The internet is a GREAT place for advertising, and self promotion. If you’re internet smart, you can even promote yourselves without coming out with much money! Places such as Facebook, Myspace, and even blogs are in fact great for networking. in fact, i’m going to start doing some promoting of all my fav artworks in RB in my blog soon. And having read the entries at the forum started by Karin i am now starting to think of starting a blog meant for those of them who’d be interested in promoting themselves. And also form a facebook group, or ask RB for permission to touch up their application there. Then i wanna see how much we can all gather to invest, and from there, i think we can work out on a advertising plan of some sort, i hope. seriously, when it comes to spending money, people blanched at the thought of spending $10 and they expect to earn hundreds and thousands for free.. sigh.. there’s no free lunch in this world people.. you gotta work for it, just like you work for your art! ok… hmm.. i sound very different from the usual bubbly me~ well, if you don’t already know, i am not 24/7 bubbly and hyper. i don’t have an inner monster to humor people. i get very cheesed off when in contact with anyone who’re lazy or irresponsible or makes lame excuses to support themselves. This is why i am no longer working in any company.

Sometimes I get so caught up in creating photographic art that I forget photography has other purposes. Like science, recording evidence, and advertising things. Recently we were asked to photograph a friend’s house that is for sale. I’m new to this sort of photography so any feedback, advice, and ideas are appreciated. The shots below are a mix of our work.

This is a most extensive booklet (36 pages) outlining EVERYTHING about exhibition running. Whilst it is aimed at sport clubs, the information is easily transferable to anyone’s exhibition. Page 19 says … / ” It is essential that an event has an evaluation process that is more than simply monitoring the planning and implementation. Evaluation should be carried out through the life of the event as well as at the end. Information recorded from monitoring provides a record and can be kept as a historical record for events that are held regularly. Criteria for success, and methods for measuring those criteria, need to be set when the event is first planned. Measures depend on the important questions to be answered. Questions may have to do with attendances, quality of staff, revenue, public opinion and press coverage. Methods for obtaining the information needed to answer the questions might include statistics for attendance, questionnaires from participants and spectators, and financial records. “ Submission form for Major Events / Activities in Adelaide / ... WRITTEN AUG 08 - Hi everyone, I am by no means an expert, but I do have some great, simple tips and hints that can help get you noticed and on your way to selling your shirts. These may have been covered on the forums, but I wanted to streamline it a bit and put it all in one tight package. First, I recommend that you get familiar with copying images and links on Redbubble.com by reading the information on the forums to get a basic idea of it all. Take note of these ideas, and if you have any success since reading this article, drop the thumbnail of your of your sold shirt here with an embedded link to that shirt so we can congratulate you! —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-— So here we go, starting with the most obvious thing first - 1. ONLY POST THE BEST DESIGNS IN YOUR PROFILE / I can’t stress this enough, if your design is not as good as it could be, it will bring down your entire portfolio – so go through your portfolio and be harsh in culling anything that doesn’t receive much attention or look as good as the rest. It is much better to have 5 amazing pieces than 30 half decent ones! 2.SHOWING A HIGHER QUALITY PREVIEW IN THE SIDE BAR / You may be aware that you can show a larger preview of your work in the right hand side bar, but this can often be the low quality image that we copy directly off the website. I would recommend for those tech-savvy people, to use a high quality preview file, showing the whole image or using only a zoomed in section of your image. This will give your customers a much better understanding of the quality they will get from the lines/detail of your work. You will notice on most of my works, like this / one, I have included a higher quality preview image in the right hand side bar, in this case it even has a custom watermark – ooh snazzy! There is a simple way to do this – first, after you have uploaded your shirt, go back into the program you used to make the design. Open that design and make it smaller – Width 500px and save it as a jpg. You can make it much larger than this, but I find it to be the best size. Then, upload the jpg to a website like Flickr, Facebook, Myspace or anywhere you can upload a picture. Then copy the link for where that picture is saved – _this can usually be done by right clicking on the image, going to Properties and copying the entire Address (URL). Once you have that link copied, Edit your recently uploaded shirt, and in the description box, after your words, put in an exclamation mark , followed by the link, http://example.com/image.jpg and then follow that with another exclamation point. Redbubble.com uses the exclamation marks as brackets to display images, much like the inverted commas are used to display someone speaking. 3. USING LINKED THUMBNAILS AROUND REDBUBBLE / Example: / Linked Thumbnails are a visual tease, advertising your work. Displayed in the right place they can be very effective. I would recommend going that one step further and displaying your best designs on your home page, shirt previews and in the forums (when appropriate). This is a great example of using linked thumbnails to display your other work – Here , and if you click through to his home page you will see rudeboyskunk has displayed his best work again, in linked thumbnail form. It is actually quite simple to display linked thumbnails around your site. First, go to your home page (by clicking on your name at the top right of the page). In the Clothing section, click on the View All Clothing link. This will display all your clothing works in thumbnail format. For this example (I’m using Internet Explorer), right click on the thumbnail you want to use. Go to Properties and copy the full Address (URL). It is best to open up Notepad, or Microsoft Word and paste the link into there. / Then, under the thumbnail you just clicked on, right click on the Name of the thumbnail, go to Properties and copy the full Address (URL). Paste this under the thumbnail link in Notepad or Microsoft Word. You should have something like this - / http://images-1.redbubble.net/img/clothing/bodycolor:black/cropped/ / size:small/style:mens/view:main/151516 EXAMPLE SHIRT.jpg (IMAGE LINK) http://www.redbubble.com/people/diesellaws/clothing/1572613 EXAMPLE SHIRT (PAGE LINK) Now all you need is to put them together (the end result will look something like this): !IMAGE LINK!:PAGE LINK Then next thing to do is copy that whole lot of text and paste it into your profile section, description, emails and forums. Do the same thing for every thumbnail you want to display. It may be a bit time consuming, but it looks professional and if and you are willing to put in the effort, it will pay off. 4. REPLYING TO COMMENTS/LEAVING COMMENTS/THANKING PEOPLE / No matter how many things are taking up your time in this busy world, there is never an excuse for not replying to, commenting on and Watchlist-ing another artist. This simple (but often forgotten) gesture will start discussions, and more often than not, increase the views of your work. Every now and then, I head to the Clothing page and view the recent works – then I pick out a few I like and comment them, and in most cases, favourite them. If their portfolio is really good, I will even add the artist to my Watchlist. When someone leaves a comment on your work, make a point to reply back to them straight away, thanking them for their comment. They have taken the time to go through the mass of submissions, to end up on your work and gone even further to leave you a comment! You should always thank them for that! Also, if you like an artist, send them a Bubblemail. It takes two seconds to do and it is great for getting tips and building a friendship. When I first started on RB I was really impressed with thickblackoutline , so, I sent her a Bubblemail (and added her to my Watchlist. It wasn’t long before I received some very useful tips and inspiration, and we are now in the process of co-hosting a group. If an artist inspires you, or you have a question, do not be afraid to ask! You never know what kind of tips they will pass on and, they may even like your work! 5. PROMOTING ON OTHER WEBSITES / I’m sure you are all aware of how advertising on other websites can increase sales. But most of you aren’t aware that the best advertising is right in front of you! Most people have a Facebook, Myspace and or Bebo etc. On Facebook, you can post pictures of your artwork in your Photos section – and put a link to the shirt in the description! This will get sent to all your friends on their homepage letting them know that you have just uploaded a new picture – think of how many friends may be interested to know you have just uploaded a Darth Vader Rocks” T-shirt!. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— I really hope these tips help you and I would love to know how you went since implementing some of these hints. If you like, you can send me a Bubblemail! Good luck, Diesel Laws —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / LINK TO THIS PAGE – http://www.redbubble.com/people/diesellaws/journal/1574934-how-to-sell-shirts-hints-and-tips / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-

Many thanks to everyone involved in running and moderating the Adelaide/South Australia group. To Stephen for getting it started and to our other five moderators. Special thanks to Reflexio for ringing the Advertiser regarding our current comp and trying to promote RB and the group. As a result my image Salt Pan was featured in colour in todays Advertiser along with a story on the plight of the River Murray. Great exposure for RB and the group. So from me (some 400 k’s away from Adelaide) thanks for all you do and for helping to promote our work. Steve

Someone comes into work with a sniffle and a cough, next thing you know the whole office has it. Then everyone’s partners and kids seem to have it. Before you know it, half the neighborhood seems to be coughing and sniffling. This is a virus. And typically they are not very nice. Someone in the office sees a funny commercial online and bursts into laughter in their cubicle. In fact, it’s so funny they then forward it to a bunch of colleagues who then send it to all their mates. Before you know it, everyone has seen it. People start to make parodies of it. Then you talk about “that guy in the somethingbrand ad” and everyone knows who you mean and has a chuckle with you. This is viral marketing. And it’s very nice if it’s promoting you. So you have decided, yep, I like the idea of heaps of people sharing and forwarding my email/video/podcast/picture. Now what? What will make it viral? While there are no hard and fast rules, here are some elements of good viral campaigns… Embrace emotion. Make people feel something. Move them. Make them laugh. Offer free stuff. If I saw good free stuff, I’d tell my friends so they can get in on it too – wouldn’t you? Be prepared for more traffic. If it works, you will be busier. Don’t make a commercial. Share a story. Share something you would tell people about. If it’s hard to share, no one will do it. Make it really really easy to forward on. Surprise people. Purple camel milkshake, you raunchy beast. People remember surprises. This guy goes into more detail

Both guerrilla marketing and viral marketing are a forms of promotion that rely on time, energy, imagination and knowledge instead of cold hard cash. They’re about coming up with a unique idea that will capture people’s attention and imagination and will get you noticed. / click on these to see bigger images In this article, Delana from weburbanist.com explains the subtle difference between viral marketing and guerrilla marketing: “Guerrilla marketing ambushes the viewer and grabs their attention when they least expect it. Viral marketing is advertising that you voluntarily pass around because it’s cool, not necessarily because you want to help build publicity. There is some noticeable overlap where a guerrilla ad that doesn’t quite look like an ad is so great that you to tell other people about it. But viral campaigns can’t be engineered in the way that other types of advertising can – they depend solely on the user to deem them worthy of passing them along.” The best kind of guerilla marketing ideas are ones that get a second audience online. They make such an impression, they’re blogged about, filmed for youtube or forwarded via email. So can you adapt some of these principles to market your own work? Putting tags on your work is the most important thing to consider when up loading work to redbubble, so you should think about setting up a system for working this through. Of late I have seen a lot of people complaining about tag spamming on RB, it is a way of life on the internet but if I put in that I am looking for “Irish wolfhound” and then you show me a photo of an oil rig you can be sure it will be the last time I look at your work! Then I got to thinking maybe some of the people that are “tag spamming” for the wrong reasons, maybe they have been ill informed about how to use tags thinking that more is better. Then there are people on RB that English is a second language for them, for those of you that do not speak a second language English is back to front too nearly every other language in the world. If this site was in Russian or French I would not be here even though I lived and worked in both countries for many years. What is a tag? It is a label or description yes but it is more than that it is the way that buyers find what they would like to buy! If you were to look at any good internet marketing forum you would see a lot of postings about “niche marketing” if they are selling “Irish wolfhound hair loss powder” then that is the tag they use not dog, elephant or oil rig! They do not want a billion hits a day from people that want to know about elephants, they would rather have 100 hits a month from people that would like to buy hair loss treatment for Irish wolfhounds! Many internet marketers make 6 figure incomes, some make 7 figure incomes, and how do they do this? Not by spamming but by making their product so hard to find that unless you really want to buy it you will not find it, strange but true. To the REAL spammers, you are scum and we will get you! To the accidental unintentional spammers, learn and grow. And to the ones that are worried about spammers, find them and report them but remember they could be unintentional spammers. Some of the things that I and you should do before adding tags to your work, also remember that the better the are tags are the higher ranking we get. • Work out what tags you are going to be before you start to up load your work. / • If you are finding it hard to come up with tags try using a thesaurus (Ctrl+F7 in word). / • Do not do it in one sitting, give it a day or so and have another look at the tags. / • If you are not sure about a word then do a search on RB and see what you get. / • Remember that many words have more than one meaning, so try and find a better word. / • Some words have different spellings around the world “color & colour” use both. / • Still looking for more tags, why not put down the Latin name for that flower? Veni vidi vici, hay not just Latin why not German, French and Italian as well. I hope that this has been of use to some people. / Martin

Kimberley and I did a test run today for an upcoming advertising shoot. The advert will appear on the side of Sydney buses later this year, and this and other images will also be used for a catalogue and website. The ad on the bus needs to be approximately 20 foot wide and 8 feet tall !!! / The customer has expressed a preference for a hip-hop / grungy look against a brick wall… the brick wall (but not Kim) will be cut away where it covers the windows of the bus. The product being marketed is a hoodie garment which is targeted at late teenagers. We don’t have the actual garment yet, but the ad needs to display the back, side/arm and front of the hoodie Amongst other things, we already acknowledge that the RH pose needs a bit of work and that my tripod/camera should’ve been about 18cm lower, but we’d love you all to be super critical to point out anything else which might detract from the product placement… Please don’t hold back… Let us know what you REALLY think … :-) It will all hopefully contribute to a perfect end-image… Closeup for catalogue… (rough)... /

That’s my prediction. Set up our calendars now , and within the next few months (if not sooner, and I hope it is), Redbubble will start converting them to the 2010 months. We can make it happen. Yes, we can! Why am I saying this? Calendars make fantastic Christmas gifts! / So I want Redbubble to make the change NOW. My clients and I need to be able to purchase long before Christmas, thus being able to post/deliver to the recipient. I have started promoting calendars already, so I eagerly (and patiently) await the format-change to our calendars!

Have you ever seen those mouth watering ad’s time and time again giving you so many promises and are so relentless that you just have to buy it? So you think OK I will, so proceed to buy the said advertised edible item. The price they advertise always seemed way lower than expected once you empty your wallet for it, usually because they only advertise the price of the smallest version of the item without letting you know that… naturally. BUT then… you open it only to find you’ve been RIPPED OFF and duped into buying something that barely resembles the ad whatsoever! so small and WAY less toppings or filling etc Here’s one example of one item I just HAD to try because of how great the ad looked… but to my dismay it was extremely misleading with chicken pouring out of the front of the wrap and the wrap being so thick and full of chicken and looking to good, PFFFFT! LIES! It had SOME chicken.. all piled in the back, mostly lettuce in this, but that was it, and not nearly as thick as the ad, or even as cooked, barely what I’d called grilled chicken. This goes for their burgers and chicken pieces and snack boxes and wraps etc etc, all the same bullshit rip off… I have so little faith in advertising now, and this is a tiny example of the depths of the false advertising from pretty much every company trying to sell something! I never believe these ad’s anymore… unless they show me the made item before I buy it, which is never pretty much. Ever seen those pizza ad’s? they are a huge rip off in their advertising, I swear to god I payed $3 extra just for some pepperoni once, and they put an overwhelming >>5<< single pieces on my pizza! I counted them… ridiculous! lol, and the fact the pizzas are getting so small there is no such thing as a large pizza anymore, and so little toppings or anything, unless you pay a fortune to add extra which still does NOT look anything like the photos they bullshit you with, they are anorexic pizzas! lol Packets of chips are a joke now, barely a pathetic third full… but packed full of air so you can’t feel the tiny amount in the bottom lol, I remember those ad’s where the chips were actually out of the top of the packet, they don’t exist anymore naturally lol, but when I was a kid the chips were actually mostly full… sigh Even macca’s is the same, funny how they advertise a burger now but nobody ever holds the burger and takes a bite in the ads… don’t want people to see how TINY their burgers have become do they! lol Hungry jacks is actually not far from their ad’s at least, and value for money, they are my fav for fast food when I need to trust one lol, or an actually normal burger and chips shop, they are OK sometimes. Now I’m not a huge fast food eater anyway, I like to eat healthy and stay fit and only have a bit of poison occasionally lol, I just wish when I did it was worth it for those few minutes of stolen indulgence :P sadly it’s not. Anyways I don’t want to rant all day lol, but things used to be so much more HONEST in advertising… you got what you seen and paid for pretty much, no more sadly, profits win over customer satisfaction these days… fuckers, I hope you all get rats balls in your cheeseburgers! Enjoy. Jay.

Tone has journaled about Ken Duncan having a spray regarding the rules and regulations confronting photographers in Australia at the moment…as Ken states, there’d be much less tourism without the photographers…. This is a very interesting read….especially to those who are being accosted more and more by self righteous worriers who seem to think we’re all there to photograph their children, and paste them all over the internet….or dare to show off the beauty of our country…

Before I get shot down for not posting this on a Forum, my reason for not doing so is as always: I get more hits if I post it as a Journal and the people I know on RB and consider my friends are more likely to see it. / So what is the problem this time? Well, I’m curious as to why people announce on RB that they have sold something on Zazzle and elsewhere. / Is this REALLY beneficial to anyone on RB, or is it just plain hubris on behalf of the lucky seller? Surely we should be encouraging eachother ( and others) to buy work from RB, not the ‘competition’. Are RB and Zazzle affiliated? I don’t think so. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Maybe it’s not good ‘business sense’, but I personally won’t be offering any of my work for sale anywhere else online but RB. Okay, my graphic novel is for sale on my own website, but for starters RB don’t sell books and secondly, personal websites can hardly be construed as ‘competition’ to RB. / I know it’s a ‘free market’ and all that, but there is such a thing as ‘Loyalty’ too. Just my 10c’s worth, which comes free, courtesy of RB.
