Looking for a ‘check list’ or ‘running sheet’ for your next exhibition? Thanks to the power of google.com, and a spare hour on a Saturday afternoon of sporadic rain, I found a few PDF’s that should help you: Events Management Check List ... I really like this one! It’s comprehensive, has tick-boxes, and could easily be modified to suit any type of event. Running, Promoting and Organsing your Event / ... Page 1 to 17 have great information on setting up and ensuring your t’s are crossed and i’s are dotted. Page 18 to 20 are the pages you want to print! Club/Association Management Program / ... This is a most extensive booklet (36 pages) outlining EVERYTHING about exhibition running. Whilst it is aimed at sport clubs, the information is easily transferable to anyone’s exhibition. Page 19 says … / ” It is essential that an event has an evaluation process that is more than simply monitoring the planning and implementation. Evaluation should be carried out through the life of the event as well as at the end. Information recorded from monitoring provides a record and can be kept as a historical record for events that are held regularly. Criteria for success, and methods for measuring those criteria, need to be set when the event is first planned. Measures depend on the important questions to be answered. Questions may have to do with attendances, quality of staff, revenue, public opinion and press coverage. Methods for obtaining the information needed to answer the questions might include statistics for attendance, questionnaires from participants and spectators, and financial records. “ Survival Guide to Event Management / ... Another long-winded yet comprehensive (56 page) PDF that has a lot of useful information. Visit these pages for the details you really want: 9, 16, 24, 27, 32, 36-37. But you MUST read every other page in conjunction to get an overall and complete view of how to run your exhibition properly and successfully! Submission form for Major Events / Activities in Adelaide / ... Maybe your exhibition is SOOOO BIG that you need to fill this in. Event Guidelines / ... This could easily have been ripped off from any one of the suggested PDF’s above, but it still has some interesting information. You’ll want pages 21 to 24.

  • How To Sell Shirts (Hints and Tips)

Hi everyone, I am by no means an expert, but I do have some great, simple tips and hints that can help get you noticed and on your way to selling your shirts. These may have been covered on the forums, but I wanted to streamline it a bit and put it all in one tight package. First, I recommend that you get familiar with copying images and links on Redbubble.com by reading the information on the forums to get a basic idea of it all. Take note of these ideas, and if you have any success since reading this article, drop the thumbnail of your of your sold shirt here with an embedded link to that shirt so we can congratulate you! —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-— So here we go, starting with the most obvious thing first - 1. ONLY POST THE BEST DESIGNS IN YOUR PROFILE / I can’t stress this enough, if your design is not as good as it could be, it will bring down your entire portfolio – so go through your portfolio and be harsh in culling anything that doesn’t receive much attention or look as good as the rest. It is much better to have 5 amazing pieces than 30 half decent ones! 2.SHOWING A HIGHER QUALITY PREVIEW IN THE SIDE BAR / You may be aware that you can show a larger preview of your work in the right hand side bar, but this can often be the low quality image that we copy directly off the website. I would recommend for those tech-savvy people, to use a high quality preview file, showing the whole image or using only a zoomed in section of your image. This will give your customers a much better understanding of the quality they will get from the lines/detail of your work. You will notice on most of my works, like this / one, I have included a higher quality preview image in the right hand side bar, in this case it even has a custom watermark – ooh snazzy! There is a simple way to do this – first, after you have uploaded your shirt, go back into the program you used to make the design. Open that design and make it smaller – Width 500px and save it as a jpg. You can make it much larger than this, but I find it to be the best size. Then, upload the jpg to a website like Flickr, Facebook, Myspace or anywhere you can upload a picture. Then copy the link for where that picture is saved – _this can usually be done by right clicking on the image, going to Properties and copying the entire Address (URL). Once you have that link copied, Edit your recently uploaded shirt, and in the description box, after your words, put in an exclamation mark , followed by the link, http://example.com/image.jpg and then follow that with another exclamation point. Redbubble.com uses the exclamation marks as brackets to display images, much like the inverted commas are used to display someone speaking. 3. USING LINKED THUMBNAILS AROUND REDBUBBLE / Example: / Linked Thumbnails are a visual tease, advertising your work. Displayed in the right place they can be very effective. I would recommend going that one step further and displaying your best designs on your home page, shirt previews and in the forums (when appropriate). This is a great example of using linked thumbnails to display your other work – Here , and if you click through to his home page you will see rudeboyskunk has displayed his best work again, in linked thumbnail form. It is actually quite simple to display linked thumbnails around your site. First, go to your home page (by clicking on your name at the top right of the page). In the Clothing section, click on the View All Clothing link. This will display all your clothing works in thumbnail format. For this example (I’m using Internet Explorer), right click on the thumbnail you want to use. Go to Properties and copy the full Address (URL). It is best to open up Notepad, or Microsoft Word and paste the link into there. / Then, under the thumbnail you just clicked on, right click on the Name of the thumbnail, go to Properties and copy the full Address (URL). Paste this under the thumbnail link in Notepad or Microsoft Word. You should have something like this - / http://images-1.redbubble.net/img/clothing/bodycolor:black/cropped/ / size:small/style:mens/view:main/151516 EXAMPLE SHIRT.jpg (IMAGE LINK) http://www.redbubble.com/people/diesellaws/clothing/1572613 EXAMPLE SHIRT (PAGE LINK) Now all you need is to put them together (the end result will look something like this): !IMAGE LINK!:PAGE LINK Then next thing to do is copy that whole lot of text and paste it into your profile section, description, emails and forums. Do the same thing for every thumbnail you want to display. It may be a bit time consuming, but it looks professional and if and you are willing to put in the effort, it will pay off. 4. REPLYING TO COMMENTS/LEAVING COMMENTS/THANKING PEOPLE / No matter how many things are taking up your time in this busy world, there is never an excuse for not replying to, commenting on and Watchlist-ing another artist. This simple (but often forgotten) gesture will start discussions, and more often than not, increase the views of your work. Every now and then, I head to the Clothing page and view the recent works – then I pick out a few I like and comment them, and in most cases, favourite them. If their portfolio is really good, I will even add the artist to my Watchlist. When someone leaves a comment on your work, make a point to reply back to them straight away, thanking them for their comment. They have taken the time to go through the mass of submissions, to end up on your work and gone even further to leave you a comment! You should always thank them for that! Also, if you like an artist, send them a Bubblemail. It takes two seconds to do and it is great for getting tips and building a friendship. When I first started on RB I was really impressed with thickblackoutline , so, I sent her a Bubblemail (and added her to my Watchlist. It wasn’t long before I received some very useful tips and inspiration, and we are now in the process of co-hosting a group. If an artist inspires you, or you have a question, do not be afraid to ask! You never know what kind of tips they will pass on and, they may even like your work! 5. PROMOTING ON OTHER WEBSITES / I’m sure you are all aware of how advertising on other websites can increase sales. But most of you aren’t aware that the best advertising is right in front of you! Most people have a Facebook, Myspace and or Bebo etc. On Facebook, you can post pictures of your artwork in your Photos section – and put a link to the shirt in the description! This will get sent to all your friends on their homepage letting them know that you have just uploaded a new picture – think of how many friends may be interested to know you have just uploaded a Darth Vader Rocks” T-shirt!. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— I really hope these tips help you and I would love to know how you went since implementing some of these hints. If you like, you can send me a Bubblemail! Good luck, Diesel Laws http://www.redbubble.com/people/DieselLaws / http://thinkingdiesel.com —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / LINK TO THIS PAGE – http://www.redbubble.com/people/diesellaws/journal/1574934-how-to-sell-shirts-hints-and-tips / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-

Both guerrilla marketing and viral marketing are a forms of promotion that rely on time, energy, imagination and knowledge instead of cold hard cash. They’re about coming up with a unique idea that will capture people’s attention and imagination and will get you noticed. / click on these to see bigger images In this article, Delana from weburbanist.com explains the subtle difference between viral marketing and guerrilla marketing: “Guerrilla marketing ambushes the viewer and grabs their attention when they least expect it. Viral marketing is advertising that you voluntarily pass around because it’s cool, not necessarily because you want to help build publicity. There is some noticeable overlap where a guerrilla ad that doesn’t quite look like an ad is so great that you to tell other people about it. But viral campaigns can’t be engineered in the way that other types of advertising can – they depend solely on the user to deem them worthy of passing them along.” The best kind of guerilla marketing ideas are ones that get a second audience online. They make such an impression, they’re blogged about, filmed for youtube or forwarded via email. So can you adapt some of these principles to market your own work? Sometimes I get so caught up in creating photographic art that I forget photography has other purposes. Like science, recording evidence, and advertising things. Recently we were asked to photograph a friend’s house that is for sale. I’m new to this sort of photography so any feedback, advice, and ideas are appreciated. The shots below are a mix of our work.

  • Product review - warning.....may be confused with advertising

I have been lucky enough to win a few prizes around the traps, and the last one arrived on my doorstep a couple of days ago from the lovely people at Visible Dust, compliments of the Digital Image Cafe Cathy MacMillan – a co-owner with her husband Todd, asked me to write a small review of the product, so here it is, warts and all. I’m not all that good with words. I unpacked my Arctic Butterfly 724 Total Care Bundle with glee, knowing my trip to New Zealand had left my sensor with more dust bunnies than I cared to mention. What fabulous care this company takes with it’s accessories. Zippered tailor-made PVC bag for the Arctic Butterfly, with a solid case inside that, with the Arctic Butterfly nestling into a cut-out foam bed. The Sensor Loupe also has a wonderful tailor-made PVC container, and inside there are extras too! The Loupe itself is encased in a microfibre bag with a looped closure, there’s a separate microfibre cloth to clean the screen, and in a pocket on the other side is a cord to attach to the Loupe so you can wear it around your neck, I guess to stop it being dropped. (These people must know me too well!!) Each of the PVC bags also has a large clip so that you can hang your accessories from a convenient place, you could be a travelling sensor cleaner with a tool belt of Visible Dust tools. The focusing screen swab was my first test, so I opened up the camera by removing the lens, then used 2 drops of liquid on the swab, wiped it gently across both focusing screen and mirror, then checked the view with the lens back on. This made quite a huge difference to start with! I then tested the Arctic Butterfly. I loaded up the supplied batteries, took off the clear perspex lid, and turned it on. The whirling brush apparently picks up static so that it can clean off any contaminants. My sensor is a contaminant attractor, so I was hoping that we’d see a huge difference! The 20D has a very small sensor, and therefore the opening seems quite cramped. It’s easy though, and needless to say a single sweep of the brush was all that was necessary. It looks quite clean to me! Time to get out the Sensor Loupe! Whoa! What a fabulous accessory! You can see every millimetre of sensor, in bright clear light. What an innovation! Everyone who uses a DSLR needs one of these! Ok, the 20D sensor still appears to have a couple of smears, which is obvious from the use of the Sensor Loupe. It’s time to check out the sensor swabs. The supplied swabs are the 1.6X size, to suit the Canon 20D. It’s important to use the correct sized swabs. Three drops of sensor cleaning fluid – and leave it for a few seconds. Swab the sensor by using a single pass across it. Check with the Sensor Loupe, and voila! It’s clean, shiny and ready to go. It’s a complete and easy to use product, and I can highly recommend it! Documentation is attached to the boxes that contain the swabs, the liquid is supplied with a flyer to give the entire directions as well, and if in doubt, there’s a wealth of information on the webpage Great Christmas present, people!

People can be either selfish or they practice too much self humility.. i think confidence is necessary to survive. One must learn how to be be thick-skinned sometimes and think like a businessman once in awhile.. we can’t just rely on mere word of mouth or just 1 website to promote our art. that’s just an excuse to be lazy. So unless we wanna die like all the great artists of the past, poor and acknowledged only after we die, we should do something for ourselves already!! Do some networking. Make more friends. Get more contacts. Know more suppliers/printers/artists. Start a joint exhibition. Print some namecards. Form a group in great and “in” networking places such as Facebook and Myspace or something. The internet is a GREAT place for advertising, and self promotion. If you’re internet smart, you can even promote yourselves without coming out with much money! Places such as Facebook, Myspace, and even blogs are in fact great for networking. in fact, i’m going to start doing some promoting of all my fav artworks in RB in my blog soon. And having read the entries at the forum started by Karin i am now starting to think of starting a blog meant for those of them who’d be interested in promoting themselves. And also form a facebook group, or ask RB for permission to touch up their application there. Then i wanna see how much we can all gather to invest, and from there, i think we can work out on a advertising plan of some sort, i hope. seriously, when it comes to spending money, people blanched at the thought of spending $10 and they expect to earn hundreds and thousands for free.. sigh.. there’s no free lunch in this world people.. you gotta work for it, just like you work for your art! ok… hmm.. i sound very different from the usual bubbly me~ well, if you don’t already know, i am not 24/7 bubbly and hyper. i don’t have an inner monster to humor people. i get very cheesed off when in contact with anyone who’re lazy or irresponsible or makes lame excuses to support themselves. This is why i am no longer working in any company.

Someone comes into work with a sniffle and a cough, next thing you know the whole office has it. Then everyone’s partners and kids seem to have it. Before you know it, half the neighborhood seems to be coughing and sniffling. This is a virus. And typically they are not very nice. Someone in the office sees a funny commercial online and bursts into laughter in their cubicle. In fact, it’s so funny they then forward it to a bunch of colleagues who then send it to all their mates. Before you know it, everyone has seen it. People start to make parodies of it. Then you talk about “that guy in the somethingbrand ad” and everyone knows who you mean and has a chuckle with you. This is viral marketing. And it’s very nice if it’s promoting you. So you have decided, yep, I like the idea of heaps of people sharing and forwarding my email/video/podcast/picture. Now what? What will make it viral? While there are no hard and fast rules, here are some elements of good viral campaigns… Embrace emotion. Make people feel something. Move them. Make them laugh. Offer free stuff. If I saw good free stuff, I’d tell my friends so they can get in on it too – wouldn’t you? Be prepared for more traffic. If it works, you will be busier. Don’t make a commercial. Share a story. Share something you would tell people about. If it’s hard to share, no one will do it. Make it really really easy to forward on. Surprise people. Purple camel milkshake, you raunchy beast. People remember surprises. This guy goes into more detail

I found the HTML and CSS available on the Redbubble Promote-Page earlier today. I copied it to MS Notepad … and smiled BIG. REALLY REALLY BIGGG. After picking the CSS to pieces (reducing all the double spaces to one, modifying the color, paddings, and margins then condensing all the details) and fiddling with the HTML … I now have my own private bubble . There’s only one small problem, and I wonder if the RB-coders are working on it: It’s only displays a set list of images, and it doesn’t randomise like the ‘Lovely Flash Widget Thing’ does. I reckon it could. I’d like to say I’m working on that, but I’d need a clone of myself who doesn’t need to work, sleep, eat nor drink, and that knows XML/RSS in-side-out. Part of me can see the answer, but I’m not even sure where to start … maybe with that RSS-button … Well, maybe someone else will get it before me and give me another BIG smile. Please. On with the promotion of purchasing my photography.

An acquaintance told me of a great idea for purchasing birthday or anniversary cards. At a certain time of year, when her budget allows for it, she purchases all of these cards for the following year. / She modified her diary with ‘pockets’ for each month that the cards slide into. Instead of rushing around at the last minute trying to find a suitable one to give to each friend or relative, she has them all ready just to slip into the mailbox. Instead of standing around at the card shop or newsagent for hours trying to choose just the right ones, I suggested to her to come here to redbubble where she can choose at her leisure in the comfort of her home as well as obtain unique works of art that she wouldn’t be able to get at the shops. (And probably at a cheaper cost.) She jumped at the suggestion. So look out! We’ll have a bulk buyer amongst us some time soon! :) By the way, she likes to buy cards that her friends/relatives have an interest in e.g. sailing, dog, cat, surfing, bike riding etc. I told her to make use of ‘search’, so make sure all tags are in place. ;)

I’ve completed a sample of a screensaver created using some of the images submitted to the Bubblemania group. You can download the file from HERE Simply place it on your desktop and double click the icon – I don’t believe it will install, it should just play. (see the end of this journal entry for a list of artists whose work is included in the file) The image selection was basically a “hit and miss” – nothing was chosen with anything specific in mind other than the image orientation – this batch is landscape orientation. This production is a very small size since the software used to produce it is a trial version AND this version is to allow the contributing artists to have a look before I finalize it – there are also “nag” screens all over the place. I’ve ordered a business license for the software, so I’ll recreate it in a larger size without the baloney once I receive the license. The software will also produce an executable file containing the same screensaver as a SLIDESHOW which you might find useful as a promotional tool. Both the screensaver and stand-alone slideshow can be burned to CDs and given away to promote your work and sales at RB. These are not mean to be hosted on a website (though you can upload the file and urge people to download it from your site). Centered at the bottom of each image RB “Buy this at Redbubble” logo and a clickable link to RB, but the small version has cut most of it off. To exit the screensaver or slideshow file, simply hit any key on the keyboard – unlike using mouse movement I’ve elected the key option because I want people to be able to use the mouse to click on the RB jump link. When you exit the slideshow/screensaver there is a page listing the contributing artsts and a blurb urging people to visit their profiles on RB. I think I may also include some license terms in this page before I finalize it – ie: people may give away this screensaver or slideshow, may use it for their own promotion or advertising; may NOT sell it or package it within any other software; may not export images from the file or screen capture any image contained within the file, etc. (By the way – the file settings are locked so that complete images may not be exported.) NOW, before the finalization of the file, is the time to suggest any changes or anything specific you’d like to see included in the licensing terms. Idea for RB team: Multiple choice email-types for sending photographs to friends, family and clients – from both portfolio owners (hereon known as “Artists”) and people who want to advertise work that is not their own. (hereon known as “Advertisers”) Currently the only option is for Advertisers. It would be great to have an option for Artists to use to send a particular work from their portfolio to announce a new arrival into their gallery. I’ve spend a few moments to compose some emails that might be suitable. / ie / Yep, that’s right: I uploaded this photograph to my RedBubble photo-gallery – and just had to share it with all my close friends. Take a look, buy what you like! / (OK, a bit presumptuous with the suggestion to ‘buy what you like’, but hey, sometimes that’s what it takes!) Another suggestion for an email-type that we’ve uploaded myself, with a bit more pizazz! RedBubble. Australian. Artists. Sharing. Showing. Selling. / You are invited to take a look through everyone’s gallery. / See what you like, Buy it, Delivered to your door! / Here is one example of one of the many great artists… Anyhow, you get my point. / Step01 has two radio-buttons to tick one if you are an artist or an advertisement for an artist, Step02 is both sections of Step01 having 3 radio-buttons for different types of emails. / Etc… DISCLAIMER / I hereby hand over all words from this post to the RB Team to use as they please. I do not ask for payment should the words of the posting above be used in further advertising of RB. But if they were to buy a few of my photographs, framed, that would be nice.
