Well, not quite but it is a year ago this week, that I joined this RedBubble community. It was thanks to rsmac whilst listening to TripleJ airing an interview about RedBubble, when he joined and then couldn’t stop talking about it. It sounded sooo good, it couldn’t possibly be bad for me, could it, it not like it was an addiction or anything sinister, was it? I couldn’t help but join and see for myself. I know this has been said hundreds if not thousands of times on here, but I derive a lot of pleasure from this community. I have come across artists and their art I would have otherwise not seen, made friendships and contacts that would have seemed impossible, learnt skills that previously alluded me, sold work that I didn’t know I had the capabilities of creating, bought work that I now proudly cherish, joined art groups where my work has been showcased, host and co-host various art groups where I enjoy the interaction of other like-minded photographers, visited galleries both in and out of my local area to see artists’ work up close and personal, collaborated with artists and achieved amazing and positive results, made it to the featured pages, and even made it on the home page, read inspiring and moving short stories and series that left me gasping for more. There’s been lots of changes and some controversy in this time, but essentially the community has always remained that same inspiring community I first fell in love with a year ago. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and friendship to those of you who have made this year such a joyous and enriching one for me – I wouldn’t have missed it for the world!

I don’t think it matters whether it’s days, weeks, months, years that you know someone, there will always be things about them you will always discover. I have known Cordelia since we were little girls, and one of the things that I love about our friendship is the fact we share a love of photography, and of course visiting galleries and having cups of tea whilst discussing the merits, or not, of the art we’ve just seen. I can say that I am very excited to be part of an upcoming exhibition with Cordelia – but more on this later… If you haven’t come across Cordelia on RedBubble, then I’d like to introduce you to her. I recently conducted a short little interview with her, and here are her answers. 1. When you’re out and about photographing nature and portraits, what is your inspiration? I know it sounds clichéd but my inspiration comes from the fact that there is so much beauty surrounding us in the simplest and smallest things. A beautiful day is always a beautiful day no matter how many you experience and so the challenge is to convey that beauty. Sometimes it’s in the intricacies of a spent flower rather than one in full bloom or in another just opening. They change shape and sometimes, colour, so quickly and each stage is just as fascinating. With portraits, it’s the skill of capturing the ‘moment’ and the eyes – always the eyes. 2. Is there a genre in photography that you’d like to try your hand at, and what is it? I’m not sure what you would call this particular genre but I love the portraits which capture a time period and are very staged complete with setting, costume, make-up etc. I love the work of Kate O’Brien . The images are magical and seem to be from another time. 3. If not photography – then what? It’s usually ‘not something else but photography’. Artistically, I’d love to be able to draw. I love intricate line drawings and am equally amazed when a few squiggles can create a work of art. In my hand, the pencil just squiggles! 4. What is your favourite photographic and/or written work here on RB and what is it about it that makes it so special? Well apart from your work and that of rsmac it is hard to identify one favourite so if you’ll indulge me I’ve chosen three I really like at the moment. The first is Eyes of Steele by Aaron Carr . Little bit biased as I know the subject and the photographer but I think it captures ‘Steele’ perfectly. He doesn’t always show his sensitive side but it’s there in this shot. It also shares a setting with my ballet shots. The second is One Tree Hill Gates by Rivergirl . I just wonder where the path is headed. The colours, the composition and the treatment all work to create a story. It also has a timeless feel. Many have walked this path over the years. It’s not eerie or threatening but there is a sense of mystery. The third is Garden of Magic by Stina Haugen . This is so delicate like all Stina’s work. It just shows the beauty there is to be found in the simplest of things. The colour in the background serves as a perfect contrast to the subject. Love it! 5. What would you do if you weren’t afraid? If I weren’t afraid I’d be more impulsive, break the rules a little and be late once in a while! / I like being organised and I often think of the chaos that comes from a lack of planning because it scares me. Being a little more spontaneous would lead to a myriad of opportunities and experiences – maybe tomorrow!! / I waste a lot of 5 minute time slots in my life because I’m so worried about being late that I’m always early and have to wait!!

I’m a little excited to let you know that I’m taking part in an exhibition that commences on tuesday and being held at the Kiama Community Arts Centre (the Old Fire station). There are ten artists in total involved, two of which are also Rb’ers – Cordelia and rsmac and work being exhibited includes photogrpahy, textiles, pottery, wood turning and jewellery. I ordered my prints through RB – as it was easy, painless and hassle-free – and I was very pleased with the quality. They’re now on their way to the gallery. If any RB’er is in the area on saturday afternoon, drop in and say hello – we would love to meet you! I would also like to thank the community that is RedBubble – the encouragement and the friendship I have been shown since being a member has been quite a learning and pleasurable experience. Without this encouragement and friendship, I doubt I would have found the courage to grow and explore and depart my comfort zone quite as I have! I am so excited – and while it’s scary – it feels so liberating to be doing something that is sooo out of my comfort zone!! Oh – the exhibition is called “Ripple Creative Splashes” and it runs from 9th to 15th September. Hope to see some of you there on saturday afternoon! : )

Then let me introduce you to Esther and Ross, my local greengrocers at Glenbrook. Esther and Ross bought the little greengrocer business about 3 months ago. As locals, we all waited with anticipation wondering what sort of changes they would make to what had been a tired little fruit and vegie shop. Please take a close look at the artwork on their walls…look familiar?? They certainly looked familiar to me and finally, after doing a little project for Esther and Ross, I got around to asking them about their artwork. The conversation went sort of like this: Adriana: Esther, I’ve been meaning to mention to you – that apple print, where did you get that from? Esther: Oh, from the internet… (Adriana immediatley jumps to conclusion that the image has been bought from a fake site, rather than original owner’s site. Cue melodramatic music. Facial expression is one of shock and horror and perplexion. Esther, seeing this and hearing the music, quickly clarifies.) Esther: You see this friend of mine told me about this website where you can buy all this artwork. It’s called RedBubble. (At this point, Adriana promptly faints flat on the floor not believing what she’s hearing.) Esther: (while picking Adriana up off the floor continues) She told me if I wanted to buy artwork for the shop, I really only needed to go to RedBubble and I would find all the images I wanted. So I searched for the fruit and vegie images I was after and bought the posters. Adriana: Wow, OMG, I have to journal this and let the others know that there are real buyers out there _ And that all they need to do is tag their work. _(wistful look that lingers like a daytime soap cliffhanger dream sequence. Cue more melodramtic music.) (End of conversation, and reality descends once more) So, here’s the photo I took of a proud Esther and Ross showing the artwork they bought on RedBubble. You’ll recognise the artwork of Jerry Alcantara here, here, here as well as an image from shall here and an image from Renee Tran here . There are 3 other posters hanging on the opposite wall, also by Jerry Alcantara’s . And what have we learnt: / 1. Tag your work. Pretend you’re a buyer – how would you find your work on RedBubble? Use appropriate tags that are relevant to your image. / 2. That real people buy artwork on RedBubble, and not just friends and family and ourselves. / 3. That Redbubble in Melbourne can act as an avenue to sell the work of photographeric artists in Italy, the US and UK to a business in Glenbrook, NSW, Australia and is seen by hoardes of tourists everyday. / 3. That I needn’t bother with pursuing scriptwriting in the future. ; p

It’s that time already. This time last year I was celebrating my one year on RedBubble. How time flies – it’s now two years on Red Bubble! I finished last year’s journal entry by stating: I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and friendship to those of you who have made this year such a joyous and enriching one for me – I wouldn’t have missed it for the world! and I can honestly say that the same goes for this year. It’s been an amazing year of growth, discovery, adventure and importantly of friendship. So, to the many friends I have made on here, a big thank you to you all for being so supportive and so inspirational. I have continued on my creative journey, and your support, friendship and constant inspiration has been invaluable to me. Thank you and Happy Red Bubble Day to you all!!! :D

So, last week was the annual Fifties Fair, an event held each year at Rose Seidler House. In it’s 15th year, the event celebrates all that is the Fifties. This year I went along with Cordelia and met up with Tatiana and Peter and my aim was to spend a few hours people watching and of course shoot enough photos for a new Fifties Fair calendar for 2010. Well, I chose not to flood RedBubble with all the photos, but if you’re interested in taking a look at some candid shots of people in their fifties’ gear and poses, then pop over to flickr and see what you think. Candid photography is really tricky and certainly challenging (although at an event like this one, many people are only too happy to pose for you, so it’s not too bad in that respect. It’s the crowds of people that can prove challenging). Let me know what you think of them, I’d be interested in your feedback. And as a little bonus on the day, a lovely Fairfax photographer, Simon Bennett, also took my photo and used it in the Fairfax slideshow of the day. That’s me at 1.20 hanging out the window of an old FC Holden. thanks for taking a look :)

I am absolutely delighted to share with you the arrival of an online purchase I made several weeks ago. / I don’t know if you know or not – but recently RedBubble partnered with blurb, the creative online book publishers to offer a new service to all RedBubble members: publish your own photography/art books and sell them online! It was also at about that time that Mel Brackstone was capturing the dreamiest of images of Miss Bertie Page – doing what she does best – using a handmade loupy lens thanks to Matt Penfold. “Hmmm…”, me thought, “…wouldn’t it be great if I had a book where every page was a loupy lens photograph of Miss Bertie Page as photographed by Mel?” Luckily with the magic of perfect timing and the internet I’m now the proud owner of a “Presenting Miss Bertie Page by Mel Brackstone” Let me say the ordering process is straight forward, with emails sent to confirm your purchase as well as a confirmation email sent when the book is actually shipped. / / I could not find fault with the sturdy packaging, and the book arrived in perfect condition. / / The pages have a beautiful satin feel to them and are a good weight while the colour rendition is comparable to the images on Mel’s site. / With Christmas only a few short weeks away, why don’t you consider making your very own blurb photographic art book? Or you might like to purchase one created by another artist, like I did. They’re a wonderful gift idea, and really, you can’t beat online shopping! If you’ve created a blurb book, add your link here for all of us to view and admire.

I’m trying an experiment tinting rice paper with art tissue. Have done the first part, the crumbled paper is tinted. Now I’m just letting it sit there and see what shapes it reveals to me within a couple of days. Shipped my Canon AE1 & equipment to my mother via Fed Ex today. Don’t trust the movers with them. Cannot afford to replace them. Took photos of the camera and lens than insured them. Well I’m going to work practice drawing Pandas’. Adriana’s 11 on the 10th; so I’m going to see if I can do something for her. She’s getting some art starting supplies for her BD. Pastel & Drawing start-up kits that were on sale. I’ll miss our sitting in bed, drawing and talking. When she visited the two of us could be up past midnight talking, drawing or watching movies.
