she has been adopted !!! Blueberry is 2.5 years old spayed female bunny. She came to the Humane Society in June when her previous owners dropped her on the floor. As a result of the accident, her back had broken and she was paralyzed. One of our kind volunteers built a wheelchair specific for her needs. Blueberry loves her new chair, and adapted very quickly, running around the room socializing with other bunnies.

“Well I went to the Vets today and the results were good for Blue..but he said I needed putting to sleep…LMAO! / I registered Blue with the PDSA,and if you could have seen the state I got into attempting to get Blue into the cat Box…I was in a right mucking fuddle. He was trapped in the kitchen with me,and I thought I am going to be mauled to death here.Legs straddling the box….both me and Blue,he picked up the doormat with his claws, and even though he was almost in,I had to let him go because he and the mat wouldn’t have fitted…it was hilarious! / He grumbled and growled, but eventually I managed to do it..I was sweating like a pig.Never have I had to do this before, and it was obviously picked up by Blue,(I never got one scratch,he kept his claws away from me..such a blessed little soul. / We drove the vets, and every now and then, Blue gave such pitiful meows..my heart was breaking..! / What was I doing to this little thing I asked myself, but I had to be strong..I wanted to know if he was ok,and if this is what I had to do,so be it. / Awaiting our turn in the surgery, the place was packed out and Blue was the only Puss amongst loads of dogs, large small and teeny tiny pups.! / The vet opened the cage, and had to tip it upside down to get Blue out,I couldn’t believe it…the fight I had to get him in and now he didn’t want to come out…lol! / He looked at his eyes, and checked his teeth, felt his tummy and took his temperature, and Blue never murmered throughout the ordeal at all. / He gave Blue a relatively thorough health check and antibiotic jab,and said if it got worse I was to take him back in a couple of days, but he seems fine he said. / I was pleased I had taken him,and felt the weight come off my shoulders instantly. / I though to myself…”Oh my God…gotta get him back into the frigging Box now”!,and imagined all sorts of shennigans, with Blue ducking and diving as he had in my kitchen,,,not Blueboy,he crawled back into the box like a pussy cat…Oh Yes..he IS a PUSSY CAT aint he?LMAO. / When we got home I expected him to do a runner, but he went to his dish and started feeding his face..none the worse for his experience thank God. / I feel so much happier now,and all I can say is fingers crossed for his future with his New Family, who cared enough to get him sorted, not like the creatures who owned him before we did..! / Thanks for the advice everyone..I am one happy soul now,but I can’t find Blue at the moment..hope he hasn’t taken offence,,,I only have one fence…!!Apologies people,as you can see I am crackers today, but so relieved! / (SIGH).

As you probably know,we have a visiting cat who is here with us a majority of the time. / When we went away,I informed the owner we would be away for 2 weeks and to make sure that Blue was fed and watered, but left food with my neighbour just in case! / On our return home,I noticed Blue had lost weight and his eyes were dull, and the third eyelid was visible and didn’t retract and it looked awful. / Told the owners Mother (my so called friend) to tell her daughter about the problem. This was a month ago,and nothing has been done…I suspect my friend didn’t pass on the message.Blue is a lot better now,but that 3rd eyelid is still obvious especially when you tickle under his chin…awww! / As I have reported the owners to the RSPCA before,I am loathe to do this again, but I can’t take the animal to the vet’s because he isn’t our cat! / I know the third eyelid could be due to weight loss and lots of other thing as well..any ideas on how I can deal with poor Blue, without alienating the owner yet again. / Should I make out the cat is mine and take him anyway..?

You said you’d never brushed your teeth so much. There was running water. You’d never had running water before. You brushed your teeth until the bristles were worn down. You swept the floors, you scrubbed the boards and patted your stomach and pretended that you didn’t care. You knew that the growing bump was only temporarily residing within you. That’s how it was. Babies could never stay with fifteen year old babies. You were always the baby of your family. How could you be a mother? You scrubbed the floors, you made your bed, you ironed the linen, you cleaned the kitchen, you washed the dishes and rolled your eyes at the sisters. You could never look after anyone else except yourself; that’s what they told you. No matter how much you had grown, no matter how much your belly had swollen, no matter how many times that heart beat within your being, no matter what. You couldn’t be a mother. You delivered that baby, into the world, into the room, into time and space. That place – it never introduced the two of you. She left your centre, but never your soul. One day, you might get to hold her. I hope so. (a tribute to the unwed mothers of the 1960’s) xx

I kind of have a confession to make… I’ve never really given a whole lot of thought about what kind of social issues exist in Australia – I always thought things like racism, sexism, homophobia, corrupt governments and the like were things that just didn’t go on down under – people were too busy taking pictures of all the beautiful landscapes, or something. This ,however, opened my eyes a little wider. I kind of wish America would report more on international stories like this… even if it’s completely heartbreaking to know what Mari Russell went through, and maybe a little unsettling to now know that I might not be completely free of things like prejudice if I traveled to Australia :P Still, flying down under to see a place with scorching Decembers and where toilets flush in the opposite direction (not to mention hopefully meeting quite a few RB’ers) is totally on my agenda, guys! I just wish airfares were a little more affordable…

Sorry that I haven’t been here much lately but on Saturday, Jim and i adopted 2 new little pals..2 black cats..from the humane society here in Winnipeg. Very sad what people to do animals..how can people be so cruel? We had saw some sad stories there..someone had put a cat in a crate..nailed it shut and left it under a bridge…..of course its cold here in winnipeg at this time of year too..not that it matters if its cold or hot..just as bad..also some cats were brought in that had their feet frozen to a cat trap..geez. Yes we did go for 2 cats…of course to keep each other company… / both of them are black of course ..what other color would there be for me? lol / I’ve always wanted a black cat and now I have 2..so I’ve been spending time playing with my 2 babies. The boy is 1 and a half.. and the girl one month younger then him.. / they aren’t siblings but they almost look alike. 1 boy and 1 girl…I named them Salem and Sabrina respectively. I may post photos soon…i’ll see if I can get better photos to post.

There is just something about me, the many four legged creatures who have graced my life and their names. The horse, Mouse, that so many of you are already familiar with because of the many photos I’ve done of her, came with the name I said that I would give her before I ever found her. I want a gray horse that I will call, Mouse, is what I told anyone who would listen. A friend found the gray horse for me and I waited, somewhat impatiently, for the niece of the seller to email photos of her. The photos came in very late one night or maybe early one morning. I knew as soon as I saw them that she was the horse I’d dreamed of for so many years. I printed the photos and thumbtacked them to the bathroom wall, right beside the mirror, where I knew they would be the first thing my husband saw in the morning. And, across the front in bright red ink, I wrote, “THIS IS THE ONE!!!” It wasn’t until the next day, when I called the eighty-five year old man who had bred, raised, and trained her, that I discovered that her name was: Mouse’s Funny Face. Funny Face quickly adapted to being called Mouse and now answers to nothing else:-). / As for the infamous, Red Fred, I had just lost my thirteen year old Spaniel, Sidney. We had to have him euthenized after he shattered his hip. That was the hardest decision of my life and I still cry when I remember so clearly the way he “smiled” at me and wagged his tail as my husband drove him to the vet that last time. My husband was insisting that we did not need another dog but there are very few times in my life that I have been without a dog. I was determined that I would find another. It was near Halloween and my nieces came for a visit. We pulled out the old, worn ouija board that I’d played with as as child and started asking it the typical silly questions. The girls, of course, wanted to know who they would marry and what they would be when they grew up. I said that I had a question, too. I asked, would I get another puppy soon. I’d never gotten such a response. The pointer sped to Yes and then spelled out RED FRED. We were all a bit unnerved but we laughed it off and I pretty much forgot about it. The next week, I returned to the vet’s office to offer the remainder of Sidney’s many medicines to someone who could not afford the medication for their own dog. We all had a good cry remembering Sid. The receptionist followed me home and she saw me make the quick decision and even quicker turn onto the road to the Animal Shelter. I walked in expecting to see the usual crowded cages of sad faces but there were only two dogs there. One had been lost and was waiting for its owners to pick it up. The other was a little red pup that was fiesty and full of energy. He had the most intelligent eyes. I immediately opened the door to his cage and he darted out and began to almost literally bounce off the walls. After she finally managed to corral him back into the cage, the attendant told me that he wouldn’t be available for adoption until the following Monday. He’d been picked up because of alledged abuse and the owners had until then to pay the fine and claim him. That was Friday and it was the longest weekend. I called as soon as the shelter opened on Monday morning and was in the car before they finished telling me that I could have him. The told me that they were calling him Hook because he’d come in with a fish hook piercing his lip put there by two boys whom they suspected of torturing him in other ways. I told them no, Hook is not his name. His name is Red Fred. / Fred was a precocious pup who grew into an intelligent and loving friend. He is my constant companion and is still as full of life and play at eight as he was the day I “accidentally” released him from that cage. There are many more stories of Fred but I’ll save them for another day.

Thanks so much to Mark Chapman and millicentkitty for selecting me for featured member in the Rescued Pets group this week! I’m honored! I only have one photo of my rescued lab mix, Callie, on my RB page so far but hope to add more soon. Rescuing pets from animal welfare groups or bad situations is very important. There are so many unwanted pets out there that need a loving home. There is a website called Petfinder.com that has thousands of dogs, cats and other pets from animal welfare groups across the USA, waiting for a new home. Every time I look at it, it almost makes me cry… some of the same pets are on there for months or even longer. I just want to adopt them all, but of course I can’t do that. But at least my family and I saved one of them and hope we can afford to get another one in the next year. Callie would love a dog buddy! Adopt a pet and find a forever friend! Petfinder.com / (lots of great info about pets even if you are not adopting right now – plus products you can buy to support the Petfinder.com Foundation) Buy pet related products to support Petfinder.com / (I have a petfinder.com sweatshirt – warm and cozy on those chilly winter days!) Make a donation to Petfinder.com Callie and I thank you!!!

  • PSPCA Rescues Hundreds of Cats and Other Animals From Animal 'Sanctuary'

I’ve been in bed with a migraine all day and just got up a little while ago to check all my email. This message from the Pennsylvania SPCA is one of the last messages I read and my heart is sick with grief ~ especially because this happened so close to home. Here’s the text from the email: Dear Friend, I spent all night moving sick and dying cats into cages for transport to the animal hospital. I am exhausted. Everyone around me is exhausted, but there is still more work to do. More cats to help. On Thursday night, the Pennsylvania SPCA raided a place called Tiger Ranch. There were more than 600 cats living on the 30-acre property. Tiger Ranch advertised itself as a “no-kill sanctuary” so people dropped their unwanted pets and stray cats off thinking that they were saving them. Instead, the cats were neglected, underfed and left to die. The cats were living in filthy, cramped conditions, without enough food or water, and many were suffering from untreated illnesses. When they died, the owner of the property buried their bodies in large burial pits and covered them with dirt. It is a horrific, nightmarish scene. Cat fur lines the ground around the burial pits. And even worse, there are dozens of dead cats in freezers, waiting to be buried. On Thursday night, the owner of Tiger Ranch was arrested. We have now seized all of the cats and are providing prompt medical care. With the help of partners like the ASPCA and local rescue organizations, we have rescued most of the cats. Some were so ill that they had to be humanely euthanized. Some died before we arrived or on the way to the animal hospital. But we’ve saved many hundreds of them. The Pennsylvania SPCA has set up a shelter and animal hospital just for these cats in Clarion County, PA. We will be fully providing all medical care and boarding until they are well enough to be adopted. We are accepting donations to the Tiger Ranch Fund to help pay for our efforts. You can support the Pennsylvania SPCA and donate directly to save these neglected cats online. Just write “Tiger Ranch” in the dedication field. We also accept donations over the phone (215 426 6304 ext. 217) or via mail. Please contact Rachel McCrystal, Director of Development, at rmccrystal@pspca.org if you have any further questions about donating to help our efforts. I am shocked by the neglect I’ve seen over the past two days. One small black cat dead in a litter box. Dozens of skinny cats pushing each other out of the way to get to one dish of water. Many cats that were so weak from dehydration that they could barely walk. Some literally blind from illness or bleeding from their mouths. Hundreds of sick, sneezing, crying cats. As we work here in Clarion County, providing urgent medical care and trying to ascertain what exactly happened at that horrible place, I know that these cats will never again have to suffer like that. I am promising that to each and every one of them. / / Please help if you can. All my best, Howard Howard R. Nelson, Chief Executive Officer Here’s the news story in it’s entirety. You Can Help / You can support the Pennsylvania SPCA and donate directly to save these neglected cats online. Just write “Tiger Ranch” in the dedication field. We also accept donations over the phone (215 426 6304 ext. 217) or via mail. Thank you all for reading and extra thanks to all of you who are able to help these abused creatures find forever homes! UPDATE: / You can view the news story from last night here.

I just found out about this place and I must admit I’m thoroughly impressed! The Washington Animal Rescue League is by far the most impressive animal shelter I’ve seen or heard about. It’s high tech, all the animals have their own rooms with flowing water, natural light, the best medical care, and area residents can have ANY ANIMAL spayed or neutered for FREE. I encourage everyone to visit the website and watch their videos. They have indeed set a new standard for animal care!

Last night (Friday), I was wandering around the shopping centre and as usual when I walk past the pet shop, I stopped to see what puppies and kittens they had in the window. I saw a kitten which appeared to black all over – it was a little hard to tell as she/he was curled up, half asleep. The others in that pen were black and white. Our first cat was a pure black queen – what a character she was! This afternoon, after picking hubby up from the club, we went back to the shopping centre because I’d forgotten something I needed. I decided to walk past the pet shop again and see if the kitten I liked was still there. Hubby follows and I pointed out the one I liked. We discuss it briefly and, as we turned away, a lady asks if we’re interested in a kitten FREE? She said the magic word. She told us she had some kittens she was going to bring up to to pet shop in about 2 or 3 weeks time but if anyone wanted one before then, they could have it at no charge. She described them all to us – two gray males and a female which is a creamy pale apricot colour and not a long hair – that’s a relief for me as, much as I love cats, I’m allergic to them. Damn, damn, damn!!!! I wanted a female, and this one sounds gorgeous, so that’s worked out very well. Apparently they all Sit on command, expecting to be fed!!! So, in about 4 weeks time, we hope to be adopted by a new kitten – we’ve been without a cat since October 2000. I hope that four weeks hurries up and passes – i can’t wait!! We’ve been lucky to be owned by 2 cats with very distinct personalities, so we’re hoping this one turns out to be a character, too.

I’ve signed up as a Havanese rescue foster mom. What the heck is a Havanese? They’re cute little dogs that originally came from Spain and travled with Royalty to Cuba (Havana). They are small, but sturdy – sort of like a contual puppy! Two weeks ago I took Tanya in. She has an adoptive dad coming to take her home next weekend. I met the guy and he’s very, very nice and Tanya liked him right away. The pups are rescued from puppy mills. Many of the mills are run by Menonites and Amish (can you believe it?!). They treat the dogs like a ‘product’. One of the rescue ladies went to buy a whole litter of 8 pups and returned with only one because the ‘miller’ told her, very nonchallantly, “Oh, the otherones froze last night.” !!! Many of the dogs are kept in wire crates stacked five high – the pups on the bottom get pooped and peed on by the dogs in cages above them. The females live in the wire cage, sometimes never leaving it, and crank out litter after litter of puppies until they grow too old or die, or are let loose to fend for themselves. Once I learned about this I had to help. Normally I wold have 2 tiny six-week-old pups and keep them in the bathroom upstairs where the floor is heated and they’d be away from our dogs until they are deemed healthy. I am their link between their littermates/mom and the real world and people. So, several times a day I open the bathrrom door and let them roam out at their own pace and sniff me and ‘explore’ the world a little at a time. However, when I tok Tanya a couple of weeks ago, she was three months old and rough-and-tough-and-hard-to-diaper, lol. She’s healthy, so could be with us downstairs. She’s wearing Gracie out (lab/great dan mix, ten years old), George, our Beagle who had abandonment issues (we rescued him from the side of the road) so he’s doing his best to ignore her. I’ve been potty training her and she learned very fast. She has SO much energy – I’m exhausted, it’s like having a two-year-old child in the house – she chews everything – but I love knowing she’ll have a happy home, not a life of torture. I’ll miss her a lot when she goes ‘home’ but I’ll get over it and move on to saving the next pup.

Mattie’s Story My 12 year old puppy Mattie has been recently diagnosed with liver cancer. When she had an ultrasound done, the doctor said she needed surgery to remove the tumor and the spleen (the tumor was wrapped completely around it), but it was only a 5-10% chance she would make it through. Well, she did and with flying colors. She was out chasing ducks 2 days later. Unfortunately, I found out the tumor has mastisized before they were able to remove it and cancer spread to her liver. They gave her less than 2 months to live. But, it’s been over 2 months and she’s still going strong. She’s already gone through 2 sessions of chemotherapy without getting sick, but the specialist told me last week not to expect too much. He also let me know approx. how expensive this was going to be. Her treatment includes 5 drugs: Denamarin, Doxorubicin, Cychophosphamide, Piroxicam, and Tramadol. Along with these drugs, she has to go in once a week to check blood and have x-rays/ultrasounds to determine the location and or spread of her cancer. So far, with the tests, surgery, x-rays, etc. the bill is up to $5000. The specialist told me to expect at least $8000 more. I just can’t give up fighting for her though. Whatever I have to do to save her I will do. She’s my kid. I’ve never been able to have children so my pets (Mattie and Checkers, her 16 year old brother) have become my children. Who knew you could ever love something so much. About my kids I adopted Checkers 15 years ago from a local shelter. On the day I met him, he was to be put down since he had been there over 7 months, so I asked if I could adopt him instead and he’s never left my side since. He has been so great taking care of Mattie. Any time he can sense that she’s hurting, he walks up and starts licking her ears and nudges under her chin to curl up & fall asleep. He never leaves Mattie for too long. I met Mattie when she was 6 weeks old. Her mother and 5 brothers and sisters were found starving in an alley Austin Texas until a local took them in and fed them until they were old enough to be adopted out. Most of her sibblings were adopted by the time I got there. Everyone wanted the ones that looked like black labs, which were all of them except Mattie. I stood outside the yard and watched for 10 minutes or so, watching her try everything she could to get any attention at all with no luck. All of a sudden this runt of the litter with her bloated belly and ears and feet that were waaay to big for her little body made a b-line through the yard straight for me. She was the most precious thing that I had ever seen in my entire life. Since then she’s gone everywhere with me, even tubing down the Guadalupe River in her own tube… my puppy freakin’ rocks! The 3 of us have been through everything you can imagine, including almost being homeless. I remember a time when I couldn’t even afford to buy groceries, it was either food for them or for me, so I was able to go for about 5 days without food so my kids could eat. Mattie has even saved me twice, once from a bad boyfriend and once from myself. She has never once given up on me, so there’s no way I’m giving up on her. Our Goal So far, We’ve tried to get grants from non-profit organizations but have been turned down by all of them, reasons being: she’s too old, we live in the wrong state, or they don’t pay for longterm medical assistance like chemo. Now, to try to raise money for Mattie’s bills, I’ve set up The Mattie Cancer Fund on my website. Here you can check out Mattie’s Photo Journal to see her daily progress and make donations. I’ve also designed a cute sticker with Mattie’s photo on it saying “I helped save a life today”. Anyone who donates $20 or more will recieve a sticker in the mail, so make sure to enter your name & address when making your donations. The donations have been set up through paypal for safe and secured transactions. Also, I’ve put several photos of Mattie and Checkers on tees and artwork on redbubble.com, cafepress.com, and my website. So the more pieces I sell, the closer I can get to giving her the help she needs. If anyone knows of any other ways to raise/receive money, I can use ANY and ALL the help I can get. If you know other animal lovers that may want to help Mattie, please pass this site along to them.
