  • I did this about 4 years back. It was my first ever painting. Acrylic on canvas 20×24 inches I believe. Anyways, I’m fairly happy with it – although faces are not my strong point haha. I decided not to touch them incase I make them worse. I basically tried to recreate “The Awakening of Adonis” c.1900 by John William Waterhouse (my favourite painter) while adding and subtracting some elements. It’s a painting that I just adore (and you should check out the Greek myth behind the painting).

  • 8×9 inches, watercolour and gouache, 2008. This piece was painted for the EBSQ Nude In Art Show. It shows Adonis sat under a tree on a summer afternoon faling asleep. My aim with the piece was to create a painting with the feel of a pre-raphaelite painting but with a male as the subject . Adonis’ mother was Myrrha, and she committed incest with her father Theias at the bidding of Aphrodite. She tricked him by slipping into his bed in darkness but when he discovered her deception he was enraged and she fled from him. Aphrodite turned her into a myrrh tree and Theias shot an arrow at it. The bark split and from it was born Adonis. Aphrodite entrusted him to Persephone’s care but she refused to return him. Eventually Zeus decreed that he should spend four months of the year with persephone, four with Aphrodite and four alone. Adonis was killed by a boar sent by Aphrodite’s lover Ares. He was essentially a vegetation god – The Festival of Adonis was celebrated in midsummer and was essentially a female cult. Women would plant gardens of Adonis, such as fennel and lettuce, that grew quickly and had short lives.

  • Red Anenome flowering on grazing land adjacent to our home. The vibrancy of these flowers and the cluster of red caught my eye and the camera’s lens! Taken1 March 2009 – near Akyaka, Turkey Wikipedia here / Anemone are perennial herbs, plants that grow from rhizomes, caudices, or tubers. Leaves grow from the base and can be simple, compound, or attached with a leaf stalk. Terminal inflorescences with two-to-nine-flowered cymes or umbels, or solitary flowers that depending on the species can be up to 60 centimeters tall. The flowers are bisexual and radially symmetric. The sepals are not persistent in fruit, and can be white, purple, blue, green, yellow, pink, or red. Fruits are achenes The meaning of the anemone flower is “forsaken” and also “a dying hope”. The flower Anemone could also be used to signify anticipation. The Anemone coronaria (“Kalanit” in Hebrew) is one of the best-known and beloved flowers in Israel. During the British Mandate of Palestine, British soldiers were nicknamed “Kalaniyot” for their red berrets. The anemone is called the wind flower because it was believed that wind is what caused it to bloom. In Ovid’s Metamorphoses (book X), Venus transforms the blood of her dead lover, Adonis, into an Anemone. One implication is that the blood-red petals are symbolic of her lost love because, as the verses conclude, they cling too loosely to the stem and are easily lost in the wind. In some versions of the myth, Venus’s tears cause the transformation. Anemone is a plant that symbolizes unfading love. It is also a symbol of luck, anticipation, and protection against evil. Legend has it that when the anemone closes its petals, rain is approaching. / This flower’s name comes from the Greek word for “windflower.” Greek mythology states that the anemone sprang from Aphrodite’s tears as she mourned the death of Adonis. This flower meaning is truly the destruction of hope and all living things
