The first thing I saw was this beautiful turn of the century barn with the silo built right out of the lower roof. / Gorgeous architecture, in a gorgeous setting. The barn has since burned to the ground unfortunately , right after a crew finished restoring it to it’s / original condition. This area is located to the south of the High peaks region / in the Adirondacks a great area to explore and hike.

  • The Great Hot Air Balloon Flight! (finally.....)
    by Jeannette Sheehy

We had an early start on Saturday morning – up at 4.30am to drive up to the meeting point in Queensbury NY, an hour out of Albany. After a mild and rainy beginning to the week, the temperature had dropped significantly and it was a very clear and frosty morning. The pilot and ground crew drove my husband and I and two other couples to a field in the middle of the countryside and blew up a black rubber party balloon to let go into the sky to see the wind direction. Once they had established this, they drove us to another field. It was FREEZING COLD in the farmer’s field and so we were all jumping up and down as the hot air balloon inflated and photos were taken. Finally the pilot called us over for pre-flight briefing and instructed us to get into our compartments. I was excited but a little nervous, especially when I looked over the edge of the basket and saw that we were already off the ground…it was so gentle, I hadn’t even noticed! The thought running through my head was…”There’s no going back, if something happens to the balloon and it malfunctions, we’re dead!”. However it was so serene and calm and peaceful up in the air, that all nervousness was forgotten as we flew over the Adirondack National Park, seeing other hot air balloons in the far off distance,as the the sun rose into the sky. The sky was so clear, that any sounds from below were easily heard by us. The train in the distance; a dog barking manically at us as we flew over a farm. Below us in the fields were geese and deer; the whole landscape looked frosted over and sparkling in the sun. Phil the pilot brought us over a wooded section and flew the balloon lower so that the topmost branches whisked under us. There was a crash below and 3 deer were running through the woods under us. The hour went really quickly and I was so in awe of the scenery, I didn’t take as many photos as I thought I was going to. I just wanted to take in the whole experience. As we came in to land, the pilot told us that as the wind had picked up, we might experience a couple of jolts, as if we were in a subway train. So we landed and bounced up again, then landed and bounced…finally coming in to rest. The crew dragged us to a better spot and as the wind picked up, the pilot asked a couple to jump out quickly. After they jumped out, the basket started to tip…(good thing we had hand holds and bars to grab hold onto!). I ended up on my hands and knees face down in the icy grass, hearing my husband shout, “Big guy coming in to land!!” as he then toppled onto me. I was laughing so hard, I couldn’t move…and to make matters worse, or funnier, one of the couples started taking photos!! Finally we got out, none the worse for wear – all of us so happy and excited to have finally been on our first hot air balloon ride!.... It was a fantastic experience, and one Dan and I will remember for a LONG time. I would definitely do it again!!! If you want to see the photos of it, click on balloon flight and you’ll see the wonderful photo of our landing!! Yes, I’m the unphotogenic one in the brown hooded sweater…!!
