I don’t really do weddings. I like to do kids pics. They are cute, natural. and their parents LOVE their rolls. (whereas parents don’t love their own!) funny (now), for this shoot, I began shooting and thought, wow this roll of film is going a long way…there was no film, I was shooting blanks! er…nobody noticed. Lucky it was pre-wedding. I reckon thoses mistakes, or mishaps, are great learning curves-I have never, ever done that since…and now I’ve gone digital, will never, ever be possible!

this is an ad for a local newspaper (Tiroler Tageszeitung) which is only refered to as “TT” the way the kids hold their hands should symbolize the two Ts of TT – easy, yeah? “Mein Herzblatt” means more or less “my sweetheart”, but in this case it has another meaning as well. in German “Blatt” means also sheet – so the meaning here is the newspaper is my favorite newspaper… sorry, kinda tricky to explain in English – but those of you who know a little bit of German will get the hang of it…

For some strange reason you’ve found yourself with a B&W image that you want to add some colour back into. Perhaps the bride holding the bouquet would look really nice if the roses were red and the stems were green but the rest of the image was left in B&W. There are several ways that you can go about this in Photoshop but what we’re looking for is the most flexible, one that we can edit later without having to bin a couple of layers because the colours weren’t quite right. You know the scene, spend a few precious hours doing the roses in the bouquet and then you find out that the darn things were pink, not red …... arghh! The question is, is there something within Photoshop that can help us ….. indeed there is. Anyone who has restored some old photos will know all about hand colouring and basically, that is what we are going to do. Open a B&W image, or just desat a colour one, or convert to grayscale (not that you would normally do that) but we’re just going to have a play and we don’t want any colour in the image, we don’t want it in RGB mode. So what adjustment would give us the most flexibilty to change the colour if we chose too. You guessed didn’t you :-) We’re going to be working with a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and we’re going to check the colorize box. At this point the whole image is going to be whatever colour you choose, that’s okay, we’re going to fix that. Choose a colour with the Hue slider – Adjust the Saturation slider and the Lightness slider until you are happy with the colour. Now you’ve got this great big mess but we’re gonna fix it. Go down to the little mask icon at the bottom of the layers palette and click on it. You will now have a white box next to the hu/sat adjustment layer – and you’ll notice that you image still looks awful. So lets fix it. Click on the mask (white box) to make sure that it is active and press ctrl i on the keyboard (cmd i for the Mac) The mask should now have turned black, and the image should look exactly like it did when we first started. Grab your brush, and making sure that the f/ground colour is set to white (cos on a black mask, white reveals) and simply paint the area that you want the colour to show through. Change the layer blend mode to soft light, or if you don’t like that try overlay or one of the other blend modes. Don’t forget that you can also use the opacity slider to take down the intensity of the colour. So yeah! how am I going to change the red roses to pink ? – double click on the hue/sat adjustment layer (not the layer mask), and the hue/sat dialogue box will appear. Change the hue/sat/lightness sliders till you get a whole other colour …. magic, you don’t have to trash layers and with them all you’re hard work. You can do this as often as is needed to add various colours back into the image. Do a red adjustment layer for the roses and then a green one for the stems and leaves (example). Heck, do various shades of red and green if you want. It’s flexible and relatively simple to master. Do gradients as well if you like and have that effect on a single rose and another gradient effect on a different rose. Make sure your f/ground and b/ground colours are set to what colours you want to use in your gradient. Click the little adjustment icon at the bottom of the layers palette and click gradient. From the dialogue box pick your f/ground b/ground gradient choose linear (or one of the other gradients available) click okay, add a layer mask, invert the layer mask, grab the brush tool, making sure that it is set to white – and paint in your gradient. This is limited to a certain degree but you can get some really nice effects going on and best of all it is editable. Here are a couple of sample shots. I’m not a flower photographer, so this is about the only image with a flower in it, but it will give you an idea of what you can do. Disclaimer – All spelling mistakes are deliberate :-)
In true rebel spirit, I have once again defied the laws of time travel, & brought something back with me. I found this flyer for the brand new P.I.C.C.E.E. “cybernetic companion” below a block-wide holoscreen in New Vegas. You won’t believe how popular these things will become after the continental reconstruction of 2837. P.S. If anybody asks, you didn’t hear this from me!

I don’t really care how this was achieved. Could be an air brush, warp tools in an editing program, socks, gourdes, various living tubers, “The Pump”, a customized rented insert, too much starch, or even the most well endowed human male on earth with his skin pulled upwards to make a seamless sack of sexuality. SOMETHING hid that ‘snake head’, if it ever was in there – fighting for a breath of fresh air. But Armani achieved it for the women of the world to enjoy (and a large population of the guys as well). I’d rush right out and get a pair, hoping they are the new padded bras for men, but I’d hate to have to buy all new pants. There’s no way I could shoe-horn anything that massive into jeans I already wear. Besides, the doctor told me to lose 10 pounds last Friday. If it works the same way on men as women, the designer undies would be worthless as soon as I lost my “fun fat” first; what was left would be rattling around in there like a pebble in a pumpkin. Odds of this ad making it to the Sacramento markets are nil minus 250,013. Old ladies would walk by and cry. Old men would walk by and cry louder. Kids would ask questions in their sex ed classes that nobody would be able to answer. And the visually impaired would be accused of fondling them since there’s nowhere to put something this ridiculous except in the middle of the way on sidewalks. Yup, it will flourish in San Francisco where people of all genders can truly appreciate it and never even THINK about stealing the poster for their walls at home. OK, ladies. Your turn. :-)

(5X7 Acrylic on paper) I LOVE old ads, especially ones for clothes and perfume and other “girly” stuff. This a model from a magazine which I “altered” by painting a 40’s style dress over her original outfit. I also couldn’t resist painting retro-style makeup and hair-style( w/ hat) to complete the look:). I had a lot of fun doing this one, I did a few more but I feel this one turned out the best:) /

I am inlove with this collage. all taken within a 10 feet radius, I practically stalked this man around the market as he went along with his business, looking and shopping for dinner in Granville Island’s Public Market. He was quite a character really, but in a nice way. he just has this quite serious look on his face. / On the second to the last frame, the one with him carrying his grocery bag, as you can see i pointed the camera pretty much straight at him as i knelt down to get the proper perspective i want, and he smiled and nodded at me after. that’s been a little bit of a rarity for me these days. It’s just the beauty of street photography – the type of encounters you get after you get the shot, and the stories you’re left with. It’s something i never really got when i used to do landscape photography, which i really have no patience for these days. I hope you enjoy this collage more than i did, as i really had fun trying to make sense of it while putting it all together. All the pictures on this collage remain untouched, with no exposure or any other type of enhancements. Location : Granville Island, Vancouver BC Canada ps: i just thought about going back to this restaurant nearby and getting them to hang this on their wall hahahaha
diptych of found image. (edited together to create the illusion of continuity, an illusion that is at the same time disrupted, since the goal is not to achieve perfect synthesis of the parts, but to cause a double take)
I’ve added this to the “Free Tibet” group because of the work that The Beastie Boys have done for the cause. The Free Tibet concert that the Beastie Boys put on in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco in the mid 90’s was quite an experience.
