A big thanks to everyone who has jumped on board. It’s such a buzz for us to see the community evolving and so much great work on display. One of the most common requests we are getting is “what’s next?”, closely followed by “when?”. So to keep you all in the loop, here’s the inside word on what’s coming soon at RedBubble… 1) T-shirts – Design your own or buy one from the other talented folk on RedBubble. Either way, we’ll print on demand and send them out. Black and white to start with, using high quality American Apparel tees. 2) Activity Log – The overview tab in MyBubble will soon help you keep track of sales you’ve made, comments on your work, who likes your stuff, and what people on your watchlist are doing 3) Mounted Prints – Art and photos mounted on gatorboard – a top request from all you graphic artists out there. Super strong, dimensionally stable, and dent resistant. All at a nice affordable price. 4) Better Gallery – Browse more easily through the rapidly growing set of work. Check out the newest stuff, most popular, featured, maybe even wander randomly. 5) Email This Link – Making it easy for you to tell your friends about your favourite works, journal entries or RedBubble members. Beyond that, new stuff will be coming out every month or so. A few things near the top of our wishlist are postcards & greeting cards, canvas prints, and print-on-demand books. So, what do you most want to see on RedBubble? We can’t promise to build it all, but your feedback is a big part of how we decide what to build and when.

Hope you’re all enjoying the new activity monitor. Just a quick quirk you should be aware of … For events that happened before the activity monitor existed, we have had to assign a (fictitious) date. So it may appear that you had 5 comments or sales on a particular date, but this is not necessarily the case. For example, if you had comments on 10th Feb, 15th Feb and 7th March, they may all show up with the same date in the activity monitor. Future dates for events in the activity monitor should be correct, so this little oddity will vanish over time.

As a result of the new activity monitor, we’ve had quite a few people surprised by multiple events or sales they didn’t know about. Initial indication is that it is behaving differently on the real site than on our testing machines. We’re investigating further, but in the meantime be aware that events shown in the activity monitor may not be 100% accurate. Sorry! Stay tuned for further updates soon…

Yet another update to the site this morning, with lots of great stuff… here’s the highlights: the activity monitor (in MyBubble) has had a major overhaul — the most recent events still appear on your overview page, but we’ve added a new “activity” tab, which let’s you go back through your entire history of events and filter the events so that you can see “just comments” or “just sales”, etc you can now choose to have a copyright watermark embedded on the larger previews of your images — to turn this on go to MyBubble > Account > Edit Profile all our FAQs are in the forums now we’ve changed our T-Shirt previews so that the artwork is a little higher on the tee, to better reflect what the finished product will look like we’ve tweaked some of our image processing so that the “zoom” view of most images will look a whole lot better I’m sure there’s more, but that’s probably enough for now. Enjoy!

Got it in the post this afternoon… I thought it would be a great way of getting exposure for important causes and the artists that make the messages of conscience in visual arts. I have seen members of the redbubble community go above and beyond for raising their voice when they felt strongly about something, it’s one of the affirming things about humanity for me. So… With the Art: Action Without Violence Group in mind I decided to apply for a rather hefty grant through the *JB Seed Grant Fund... if the application is successful (fingers crossed) we can print 10,000 post cards distributed in 125 venues promoting 4 ethical and important organisations, 4 pieces of work and 4 Redbubble artists… I thought, seeing as it drove me a little crazy this week, that I would put up the artist profile part of the submission to say thanks to the other participants for their involvement. Thank you!!!

  • Say "NO!" to the Orphan Works Act
    by bchrisdesigns

I found out about this ludicrous proposed law on Red Bubble...

I found out about this ludicrous proposed law on Red Bubble and wanted to let everyone else know what they can do about it! If you have not heard about the Orphan Works Act, then you should research it and speak out before it is too late (especially if you are an artist, writer, and/or musician)! No, this Act is not about displaced children or found animals. It revolves around works of art (including fine art, photography, writing, music, etc.) that are not registered with newly proposed agencies. ANY work not registered would be considered in the public domain. This is a dangerous concept and just goes to show how greedy and capitalistic our society, government, and big businesses have become. According to GoPetition.com: “If the Orphan Works legislation passes, you and I and all creatives will lose virtually all the rights to not only our future work but to everything we’ve created over the past 34 years, unless we register it with the new, untested and privately run (by the friends and cronies of the U.S. government) registries. Even then, there is no guarantee that someone wishing to steal your personal creations won’t successfully call your work an orphan work, and then legally use it for free. In short, if Congress passes this law, YOU WILL LOSE THE RIGHT TO MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR OWN CREATIONS!” We would be forced into a world where big business can bully us and use whatever they wanted and not be penalized for it. And, this law not only affects artists, writers, and musicians. It also affect the everyday consumer! If you are planning to get your the photographs of your cousin’s wedding developed at a Wal-Mart or other big box retailer, then you better be prepared to get every image copyrighted or you may just end up seeing them on Wal-Mart’s billboards! Gone would be the days of having rights the minute you create something. Now, if you don’t pay to protect it, then it is like no one created the image and it is up for grabs! Who wants to live in this kind of world other than greedy politicians and businesses? And, it does not surprise me that this has all happened under the Bush administration. Who were the idiots that voted for him and thought he would do us some good? Well, seems like the joke’s on YOU! In an April 10th article in Animation World Magazine, award-winning animation producer/director and speaker, Mark Simon, writes: “It is currently against international law to coerce people to register their work for copyright because there are so many inherent problems with it. But because big business can push through laws in the United States, our country is about to break with the rest of the world, again, and take your rights away. With the tens of millions of photos and pieces of artwork created each year, the bounty for forcing everyone to pay a registration fee would be enormous. We lose our rights and our creations, and someone else makes money at our expense. This includes every sketch, painting, photo, sculpture, drawing, video, song and every other type of creative endeavor. All of it is at risk! If the Orphan Works legislation passes, you and I and all creatives will lose virtually all the rights to not only our future work but to everything we’ve created over the past 34 years, unless we register it with the new, untested and privately run (by the friends and cronies of the U.S. government) registries. Even then, there is no guarantee that someone wishing to steal your personal creations won’t successfully call your work an orphan work, and then legally use it for free.” So, what can you do about it? Well educate yourself on the issues, write to your congress men and women, and sign as many petitions as your can. Hello hello, welcome to another RedBubble Thursday. Here’s an update on what’s been released, what’s coming up and what’s going on: Activity Monitor This is still very much a work in progress, so I probably should give you some background information. We think the Activity Monitor is really important to the future of RedBubble. As the site grows, we think it’s going to be more and more important that content comes to you instead of you having to find the content. This means more types of activity events will be sent to you, which also means you’ll probably want to customize your monitor, focusing on the information you want, and ignoring the stuff you don’t need. So we’ve split the Activity Monitor into two groups: “Favorite Feeds”, which will be shown by default “Other Feeds”, for the stuff that you don’t care about too much, but might want to check out from time to time You can move the feeds between the two groups to find the right balance of information for you. Here’s a quick screen shot: It might seem a little overkill right now, but as we add in more and more feeds, I think it’s going to make a huge difference. We’ll also make it easier to organize the feeds (soon-ish) with drag-n-drop, etc. 2009 Calendars We’ve also rolled out a new 2009 Calendar design (all calendars have been automatically updated). Here’s a preview of the cover, February and the new back cover from one of John’s Calendars calendars : They’re still self-purchase only at this stage (which means they can’t be purchased by the general public), but we’ll try and get to that really soon! Pete says “if we sell more than a hundred in June, I’ll buy John a beer”. We think this should be extended to all staff and apply to each batch of 100 calendars, so please, go and buy lots of calendars to keep us all well-hydrated! The Bubble Sites Beta Continues We’ll be inviting a few more testers today, and we’ve made some improvements to the product menu design: The Challenges Beta Continues The Challenge Café Group have been helping us beta test the new challenges interface. It’s going really well, and we’ll probably open up the testing to a few more groups in a week or two after we polish some edges. And… Sets Are Coming Soon! I’m usually really nervous about pre-announcing features, but the #1 feature request right now is sets—the ability to organize or group your work into smaller ‘sets’ or ‘collections’ or ‘folders’ or something. This has been amplified even more now that we’re beta testing the new Bubblesites. We’re still at least a month (or even two) away from releasing them, but I wanted to let you all know that we’re listening, working on it, and really want to get them out ASAP. Etc There’s also the usual swag of bug fixes, tweaks and little things that I’ll let you discover for yourselves! — Justin & all these wonderful people

This week has been a relatively short one in RedBubble land due to a public holiday, and various staff out of the office. However we still have a few new things now up on the site. The old ‘overview’ page in mybubble is now gone, and replaced with the new-look activity monitor. We have added some new activity types here from the ongoing challenges beta which will help you stay on top of what challenges are happening within your groups. The list of all your groups can still be found via the groups tab in ‘mybubble’. The challenges beta has been expanded to more groups. Challenges can now be found in Challenge Cafe, Painters in Modern Times, Melbourne & Victoria, / Promote Each Other, A Photographer’s Craft, and Short Stories. Also a reminder from last week that calendars have all now been updated to a new 2009 design. So if you haven’t already, you can get cracking and make some new funky calendars from your art in mybubble/calendars. - John

I was lucky enough to be able to interview the incredibly talented Yanmos ( Yannis ) who has turned out some of the most amazing activism designs here on the Bubble , if you take a look at the Most Popular Clothing of all time tab , you’ll be sure to see many of his amazing designs ! Please check out this interview ,and if you haven’t already , take a look at this talented artist’s gallery , you won’t be disappointed . How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? I think most other activities in my life affect my creativity really & not creativity affecting my real life. I used to be a restive spirit from my early youth, for almost 10 years now I’m involved in some activism organization like greenpeace & actionaid(god-parent) & I like to do things for the public benefit. These things usually affect my creativity & “burn” my mind. To tell the truth after finishing my design school in 1991 here in Greece & Copenhagen in Denmark, I started to work in the Greek ministry of culture as designer & most of my creativity going there, in milimeter blocs with a lot of ancient drawings until November of 2006. I always remember wearing nice t-shirts(my favorite garment) with very nice designs & a lot of cool slogans. I remember a white shirt that said : “Absent Without Life” this was my favorite(bought in 1989). So back in November of 2006 I started to work in illustration first & other similar programs later, knowing nothing of graphic design, I spent a long time collecting tutorials from the internet & working in front of my pc for hours & hours, I started to draw my first design and here i am now. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful Well i can’t name only one person because i have a lot of friends here & it will be unfair for some of them, but i remember the day that I found redbubble and fell in love with it. I made a short tour of the site & started immediately uploading some of my work knowing nobody here. After 2 or 3 uploadings I realized that my “think green live green” design was featured on the clothing bracket(still not knowing what that was ) & starting to get a lot of beautiful & very encouraging comments. A big smile appeared on my face, it was the day that i started making friends here! Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you I ‘ll begin with a friend that I have had here for a long time. Her name is Kimberly Hoffard! / “Insomniac” / Hi Kimb :) The great Lyudmila! / “Snake woman” / No words for this man, Ronald Wigman! / “Burn Out” / Arteology is one of the greatest artists for me! / “Tree Be Me” And finally rubyred, last but not least! / “Winds Of Change” Love all his work ! Thanks Yannis for your time and a great interview !

Hello, So recently we’ve been doing some work on the activity e-mail. Mostly I wanted to make it more visually appealing. Compare the old with the new: You’ll notice large images and less information (noise). My thinking is that the activity e-mail is a way to bring people back to the site. They might have been away for a while and the activity e-mail is the invitation to return. The question is how often do we send it out and do people use the activity e-mail in other ways. I think we should send out the activity e-mail only when the following conditions are met: - There’s at least three events that have effected you or there have been at least eight events on your watchlist; and / - You haven’t been active on RedBubble for at least 7 days. My concern at the moment is that we’re sending out too many activity e-mails … and when this happens people just stop looking at them. Is this right? How else do you use the activity e-mail now and how would you like to use it in the future. What other comments or suggestions would you like to make? Cheers, Peter PS – Another idea that we’re considering is an instant e-mail notification (optional) when you receive a comment on your work or a BubbleMail. Is this something that you’d find useful? We currently send out an instant e-mail notification on a sale.

IMPORTANT AND BIG NEWS! Over the last few nights I became the new ‘Head Admin’ for the Redbubble Adelaide/SA group upon Facebook. It happened out of a conversation about administrators upon our Redbubble group, and was quite unexpected … yet I am glad to take on the role! Therefore: If you are a registered member on Facebook AND a Member of Adelaide/SA on Redbubble, / I encourage you to join Redbubble Adelaide/SA on Facebook ! / Then you can publicise your Redbubble gallery ! Consequently I’m now looking for FIVE new Admin’s to join me on both Redbubble and Facebook. I need your help to… / ... [1] regularly moderate artwork submitted on Redbubble; / ... [2] help run the existing roles upon Redbubble that have lain dormant for the last six months; / ... [3] choose from members submissions for a new photo image to represent the Facebook group; / ... [4] help think of great ways to publicise, market, and promote our artists upon both Facebook and Redbubble; / ... [5] and readily take on new duties as they arise! (Finding sponsorship/prizes, running redbubble competitions, etc) I hope I haven’t scared anyone, but rather inspired members to become more actively involved with the ONLY group that is fully dedicated to displaying the character, landscape, architecture, heritage and life of South Australia. I look forward to seeing you all Facebook!

Sorry to keep being so absent. The art show now has a date, 11 Oct. Will be me & a few others showing & selling. i have over 200 pieces, some are the framed paintings (well, most are colored pencil drawings) with the buttons for frames, a lot are just mounted on firmer paper, also out of my art i made a ton of greeting cards, i glued my art down to greeting card paper stock, complete with envelopes, & i also used the old fashioned cassette tape plastic cases into frames. i reduced several of my art & glued these inside, & on the back put a string to hang on the wall. All my art is ready to go. Still might have to make the food (Vegan sausages & Vegan crackers), but a group called “Food Not Bombs” may cater. They are an activist group that generally feeds the homeless and hungry. One of the woman showing with me works with Food Not Bombs & is going to ask if they will cater. They do catering to big events, like Animal Rights conferences, etc. Also will have sparkling cider & hoping to get plastic champagne glasses for these, hee hee, like they do in upscale art galleries. Also hoping to have a friend play his guitar, & Arnie’s son may join him. He also sells musical instruments & will have those at the show, too. And since last week i have been going to & from Oakland, Ca (about 70 miles from where i live) to protest at ringling brothers circus, regarding the abuse the Animals endure. Mostly for the Elephants, but the Tigers, Horses, Etc. You can check out here: https://secure.peta.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=2359 This week, starting today, i’ll be going back & forth to San Jose (a little farther than Oakland), from Thursday til Sunday. The great part is i found a friend who lives near me, has a mini van, & we go together. i don’t drive, the busses are killer expensive, plus it would take 50 times longer to get there & back. Then next Tuesday i’ll take the greyhound bus to Sacramento where ringling brothers will be again, i’ll be there from Tuesday til late Sunday. / Another activist has a room reserved from Wed til Sunday. i have to leave on Tuesday in order to be there in time for the events on Wed. my first real trip in a loooong time. Can’t afford it, but i’m going anyway, for the Elephants, Tigers, Horses Love & Huggggs to you all pinkyjain, :O))))))))))

Hi there – some of you may have noticed that I’ve been cutting down my activity here a bit recently, and I’ve been decreasing the number of groups I’m a member of. This is all totally nothing to do with any of the groups or what they are for as such – it’s totally to do with the fact that things have been getting a little too much out of hand for me here, and I need to get things back under control. So – I’m trying to keep my group membership down to only those groups that are specifically suitable to MOST of the work I currently do…. So please – no offence or anything meant – I have enjoyed my membership of all groups I have joined… but – for my own sanity I’ve realised that I have to stick to what actually is directly relevant to most of my work. And also – if I don’t get around to commenting on your work, or don’t reply to comments you make on mine as quickly as you may be used to me doing – again, apologies – but this is simply because I will (for now) probably not be around here quite as often as I have been to date. All my best to everyone - DragonFlyer aka Kallena xxx
