  • I’m a bit paranoid about doing any kind of iconic based images at the moment, due to finding other people may have done similar stuff. The last one being the grenade with a brain that i did…someone pointed out it already existed. And when i searched it up further on google…there were several(4? that i found easily) of them from stencils to one even closer to the one i designed…pin and stuff on the same side…it was done as a belt buckle so…anyway, away it went! But here goes…i did try and run it by those who might know but…not online at the moment. I did google a whole bunch of things to check if anything similar was about…but came up with nothing so i’m putting it up. Wish me luck. / . / ps- i did find a sculpture of a gun with a knot in it, flowers in the barrel…but no handshakes. / . / . /

Who’s watching the watchers? / There are up to 4.2 million CCTV cameras in Britain – about one for every 14 people… / London has 10,000 crime-fighting CCTV cameras which cost £200 million. But analysis of the publicly funded spy network, has cast doubt on its ability to help solve crime. In fact, four out of five of the boroughs with the most cameras have a record of solving crime that is below average. Selected other RubyRed shirts: / / / !

Child’s Play – Think Again / The AK-47 Russian automatic rifle designed in 1947, is amongst the most smuggled weapons of recent times, finding its way to conflicts in the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia. / In countries like Rwanda, Mozambique, Congo and Ethiopia this weapon was used by up to 100,000 children in armed conflict in 2005. Today it is estimated that there are between 200,000-300,000 children serving as soldiers for rebel groups and government forces in current armed conflicts. / Source – Human Rights Watch Child’s Play 2 / Selected other RubyRed shirts: / / /

Break The Line / My entry for the World Youth Day Challenge. / I’ve chosen to concentrate on the policing aspect of these ridiculous laws. How are the police and officials going to impose them? by grouchyolhippie

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Inspired by two disturbing announcements in the news this week. / / First, was the news that the north pole could be underwater for the first time in over 200,000 years as early as this time next year. The melting rate of the polar caps has far exceeded the most aggressive scientific estimates predicted earlier. / / Second was the plea from James Hanson, renowned NASA climate scientist, to Congress saying we have run out of time to reverse the CO2 effects that contribute to global warming. He said Earth’s atmosphere can only stay this loaded with man-made carbon dioxide for a couple more decades without changes such as mass extinction, ecosystem collapse and dramatic sea level rises. Click here for the full article on Hanson speech / / Time is almost out, and we still make excuses and procrastinate when it comes to doing the things that are required of us to protect both ourselves and our planet. Just how green is your carbon footprint? / / This is a multimedia composite. The flames are a fractal transparency created with Apophsis 3D Hack. The earth image used in the composite is a PD photo from NASA. / Post-processing done in both Photoshop and PSP8. / / Have you hugged you planet today!?

  • Support the end of all forest conversion to oil palm Palm oil is one of the world’s most popular vegetable oils. It is used in thousands of products, from margarine and bread to lipstick and soap, and is consumed by over a billion people across the world. / Ninety per cent of the world’s palm-oil exports come from the oil-palm plantations of Malaysia and Indonesia. Most of these plantations are on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. The very lowland forest that the oil-palm industry favours for conversion is the only remaining habitat of the orangutan. “Palm-oil production is linked to species extinction, human rights abuse and worker exploitation. But there is not a single British supermarket that can guarantee that its products aren’t fuelling the destruction. Most haven’t even worked out where the palm oil in their products comes from.” / Friends of the Earth Any money made from this shirt will be donated to www.orangutans-sos.org

    by grouchyolhippie

    US$3.42–US$91.20

A somewhat whimsical statement about the greatest environmental issue to face our wonderful water planet earth. Designed to get your attention first, and then bring the issue it represents subliminally to the forefront of your thoughts.Don’t you just love the passive, non-violent activism with a bit of enjoyment thrown in for good measure! / / This artwork was created using both Photoshop 6 and PaintShopPro 8. The earth and moon source images are public-domain from NASA, and can be downloaded from the links I have provided below. The background and other digital painting was done with a large variety of techniques, from creating black and white vector images to use as masks and alpha channels, to digitally hand-painting. / / One more note… the public-domain source images from NASA are in poor shape, so plan on spending quite a bit of time color-correcting, and then retouching all the scratches and blemishes in the source files before you use them in your own artworks. / / Click Here To Download Source Image for Earth / / Click Here to Download Source Image for Moon

  • The Sound Harpoon
    by grouchyolhippie

    US$3.42–US$91.20

An artwork depicting the despair of a whale while attempting in vain to escape the pain and agony inflected upon it by modern military sonar (LFAS). / / I hope to make aware with this artwork, an issue that is usually overlooked or ignored when considering and discussing the efforts to protect the oldest and largest inhabitants of the Earth. Much too often, the attention is focused only on the ongoing brutality of Japanese whaling vessels, this due to the graphic nature of the images of senseless whale slaughter. / / Ponder this for a moment if you will… what fate is worse than death for a whale? / I feel the answer to this, is when a whale is suffering in such utter and complete agony that it chooses to fling itself from it’s ocean home and onto a beach to die slowly from dehydration… choosing to die in this manner, rather than endure another moment of torture from the man-made source of it’s agony. / / How incredible the whale’s pain must be… for a whale to choose suicide as a better option. / / Please, take a moment to read the accompanying article by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) that I have linked below to accompany this artwork. It will help to educate and enlighten you about this important issue regarding protecting the whales and other marine mammals from military LFAS type sonar. I think you will be quite suprised just how dangerous and harmful LFAS type sonar actually is! / / NRDC – Protecting Whales from Dangerous Sonar / http://www.nrdc.org/wildlife/marine/sonar.asp / / Once you have read this article, then please take a moment to voice your opposition to using LFAS type sonar directly to the Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Donald Winter, using this easy and convenient online form provided by the NRDC. Stand up and let your voice be heard! / / Tell the Navy to stop harming whales with high-intensity sonar / http://www.nrdconline.org/campaign/nrdcaction_092506_a / / Now a few words about the details of the artwork and it’s creation. Photoshop 6 and Paint Shop Pro 8 were used to create this artwork. The artwork is basically a photomanipulation and composite of two public-domain images, ironically provided by two of the governmental agencies that are contributing / to the issue depicted in the artwork. / / The submarine image source is a public-domain image courtesy of the US Department of Defense – DefenseLINK Multimedia Gallery. The whale image source is a public-domain image courtesy of NOAA Photo Library. I have provided links below for both source images. / / Submarine Source Image / http://www.dodmedia.osd.mil/Assets/Still/2007/Navy/DN-SD-07-28560.JPEG / / Whale Source Image / http://www.photolib.noaa.gov/bigs/sanc0601.jpg / / I hope that both the artwork and accompanying article will educate and enlighten you, and help you gain a new found perspective, on just one of the many issues that are currently threatening the existence of our whale friends.

THE BASICS OF ART FOR ACTIVISM AND CHANGE COMMUNITY BASED ART Creative expression emerging from a NEED to collectively highlight and educate for social improvement. Involves many varied social contexts and definitions. Includes an understanding not only of geography but also history and tradition, ethnicity and dedication or belief in spirit. Includes topics/issues (but not limited to): racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism, classism, ableism and all forms of discrimination that create marginalisation in society. COMMUNITY BASED ARTISTS Concerned with the functionality of art in public arenas including community development, corrections, education, intergenerational communications, aging, environment, conflict resolution, cultural citizenship etc. Work with all media, in all disciplines, everywhere. Committed to bringing arts and education to highlight and expose the widest possible range of social conditions and challenges facing our communities. Seek to create social change on every level of society, from the most ‘personal’ to the most ‘political’. Activist Art for Leadership… How do we practice it and what style does it inhibit? Is it catching? WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? A few thoughts… If you want to change things you do it with people not to people. Ongoing revolution. To service the greater good activist art (like all forms of expression) should be regarded according to review, peer assessment, research and budget in order to gauge it’s effectiveness in society. A crucial shift in thinking is to involve people for their abilities, what they can do, rather than build up an attitude that only aesthetic or technically sound work should be the focus or at the forefront of the revolution in an ideological sense. Artistic merit should be judged according to a clear communication of a relevant, centralised and communal message, no matter the art form or level of artistic development. Activist art is concerned with cultural and ideological democracy and the right of all to have access to services. Equal rights for one should not come at the cost of another’s rights. Activist art is concerned with promoting a community that encourages ideas and the community leaders who have the courage to put them forward. A community that takes pride in the way we treat and include those that need our help. Inclusion. Apart from enjoying the right to create art for its own sake, activists are often draw to art. Activist Artists are concerned with highlighting technocratic decision making processes… behind closed doors based on limited information and without initial intention to consult those whom the decision most affected. Rather than fearing our differences, we wish to be a people who celebrate it. Recognising diversity can give birth to creativity as much as conflict. / YET… We do not seek to be a society that fears rigorous debate. It is through the testing of ideas, through endless argument and negotiation that a community retains it’s vitality and survives. let our debates be based on mutual respect and the denial of violence.
