Last night I spent a few hours making some before and after photos of the Photoshop Actions I created. I am trialling the actions using various photos to show what each action does and in what conditions they are best used in. Some photos work better with underexposed photographs whilst others work better with overexposed or properly exposed ones. You can see the results for a photo by Bea Pierce here: http://www.vanessapikerussell.com/downloads/actions/babysoft/bea.html

/ / / I created the group Art for Conservation to host compassionate, talented and generous members who support conservation and animal rescue organisations with sales proceeds from their artwork. / / If we want a change, we need to work towards it. No deed is too small, no voice is too weak, no donation is too little, no effort goes in vain. A few weeks ago I received my copy (actually that’s copies – I bought another two!) of the first Red Bubble Limited edition publication, In The Moment, and now that I have pored over every word and image in it, I thought I’d post a bit of a wrap up on my thoughts… Upon removing the book from the post-pak I was immediately impressed. The waxy feel of the matt-laminate cover in the hands, just feels, well, nice. The design of the cover itself is cool too, giving a sneak overview of the good things contained, from crops of image’s, to extracts of writing’s, a tantalising introduction before it’s even opened. Some absolutely awe inspiring writing and images featured throughout, from a great variety of artists and writers. The layout of the book has been beautifully designed by the folks at Vanzella Design, making every dp-spread interesting to look at and read, and has been beautifully produced, of a quality that you would expect to find on any art-mag stockists shelves. To put your work up on the bubble and have great artists from all over the world give feedback and encouragement, and be able to sell and buy others work are just some of the great things about redbubble. Being given the opportunity to have your work published, or shown in a real gallery, through redbubble’s on-going competitions is for want of a better cliché – Priceless. Receiving ‘In the Moment’ and seeing my work in print was simply an awesome feeling, and it’s a publication that is just so brilliantly put together by redbubble, it really does make me very proud and honoured to be a part of this incredibly talented community. Good luck to all those writers, artists and photographers aspiring to have their work published in redbubble’s next book, ‘Gaia – the Living Planet’!

Well the summer comes to a close once again for me as University starts again Monday. One more year. Just one. I have to keep reminding myself of that fact. No more backpacking, camping, traveling, and taking new photos, all the things that make life have meaning. But knowing that I am sitting on about 30 gigs of rawfiles helps. I swear post-processing photos are the only thing that keeps me sane during the school months. I look forward to sharing my newest photos and experiences with you from the last couple months and some that are older. I will try and get a new photo up within the next day or two :) Thank you to all my new watcher and all those who have favorited my work over the last couple months.

Many many thanks to the following group and the hosts that have chosen to share my wares! / (not forgetting Hertsman). “Volleyball Teamwork” was featured in Sports For All from Our Gym Exhibition Hot Press! 5 June: / The opening night was last night (photographs to follow!) and I can only say a mega thankyou for the advice that was shared with me as I feel the opening night went wonderfully to say the least! Ironically the works that I sold last night are not featured on Redbubble as they were framed behind glass before I opened my portfolio to the world last October. On the opening night I achieved an reservation of a picture depicting two african women, and money up front sales of / - a set of four abstract dancers, / - an abstract of boats at sea, / - an abstract musician / - a galloping horse in chalk, / - an abstract soul singer / - a single stem tulip / - an optical illusion – face or flower I was given lots of advice and I used all help that I could with available resources : - the wine flowed freely / - all pictures were framed / - we advertised (about 100 people came to the opening) / - we had a visitors book for comments / - I produced cards and brochures displaying my works on Redbubble and Zazzle A gamble that worked was having a prize draw on one work of art. We charged a set amount for a ticket and put numbers in to a hat – the ticket was drawn and winner announced at the end of the first night. / I did not get the full value of the work of art but I made a couple I had never met prior to last night very happy and know that word of mouth will spread …..we will know more tonight! Thanks again! 6 June The exhibition is attacting lots of English which is a new experience for the venue …hope this continues beyond my exhibition! Sold an image of three african water carriers behind glass: one of my earlier works which had beauty in its simplicity. People are continuing to add to the Visitors Book and one visitor in particular loved my take on the Desperate Man ….it was excellent to hear this in person and to be there and see the reactions and expressions on people’s faces. Let us see what Sunday will bring! 9 June / So, halfway throught the exhibition and 15 (YES 15) original works of art SOLD to a range of people from a range of countries- international acclaim and fame looms as my works spread across the globe ….lol. Germany, England and Turkey are countries where people with very very good taste live! Comments are being placed in the Visitors book, people are taking my Contact Cards and lets hope that when the holidaying ends that they look up taiche on Redbubble and get to read the big THANKYOU for purchasing my work. For anyone that may be exhibiting their works 66% of my sales are works behind glass ….I am speechless as I thought the canvas works would appeal more: you learn something new every day!

When photographing action we have a choice of stopping, or freezing the action, or allowing some degree of blurring to impart the idea of motion. So after choosing an approach we must understand how the camera sees action. The important factors are the speed and direction of travel of the subject. It is easier to capture, movement directly into or away from the camera, using slower shutter speeds, while action moving perpendicular to the lens axis typically requires a higher shutter speed to stop or freeze. Try this experiment on a city street photograph someone walking straight towards you at 1/60sec. Notice that the image is mostly captured intact. Try again at 1/125sec and 1/250sec. to see the difference. Now repeat the same with a subject moving from left to right and notice the blurring of the hands and feet. Try again at faster shutter speeds to get a feel for what you can capture. Try the same with a moving car or motorcyclist. You will soon get a feel for what shutter speed is required to stop the action. This motorcycle racer was captured at 1/250sec but notice the blurring of the wheels as they are travelling faster than the main subject. / You may want to show some blurring of the action if so then slow down the shutter speed. So when, a camera is held in a static position the background may record sharply but the moving object will blur. Or try panning, moving the camera in sync with the moving object, to give the prime subject a sharper image while blurring the background. Panning can be difficult requiring significant hand =eye coordination. Pick up and follow the moving subject before you trip the shutter and hold the follow thru for a couple of seconds after taking the photo. Panning the camera and shooting at 1/60sec managed a sharp capture of the carnival ride while blurring the faster moving silhouettes of the riders. / And of course we have seen the many images from a tripod mounted camera focused on the falling or rushing waters of a wild land stream. So make the decision to freeze the action or let it blur. So go shoot some action and enjoy that camera-Larry Grayam
