  • Acrylic/Ink//Digital /// / Somewhere in the half lit dawn / A tower looms / And thunder booms / And there in that twilight drawn / The tendrils encompass / And we tend to lose focus / Somewhere in the half lit dawn / /// This work is an experiment on a number of levels – The use of Ink both straight out of the jar and mixed with acrylic paint was very interesting to me. Then, there were some digital editing techniques I attempted – enhancing/blurring/edge detection, perspective changes and layering back in the original shape as a ghost – mostly imperceptible, but it did have its effect. Another level of experimentation was that I began with a sort of geometric abstract thingy that I like to do a lot of, and then applied and scraped color with a knife over most of the image – All in all, this was fun – I’m liking Ink a lot more :)

  • This piece was produced with a mixed material process on illustration board. I glued old, collected “Lucky Strike” packs to create the blue area, and the patterned red stripes. Then I added in selective areas of acrylic paint, dry brushing for an expressive effect. The skulls were brushed in with black ink and gesso, also the “pledge of allegiance” was written in only to be whitewashed over. Upon completing this work a little accent drawing was created on the computer. which helped to refine and finish the mixed material painting. The original dimensions of the piece are 19in. X 25.5in. It was completed in 2008.

  • This is a mixed media self-portrait piece created on charcoal paper. It was produced in about an hour, from a basic contour pencil drawing to finished product. I used two tones of pastels to expressively block in some definition, then I used washes of wine and water to add even greater tonal variations (to blend the pastels and to soften areas). I also used a soft white pastel and black india ink, creating contrast and highlights and a gestural quality. I then used some white acrylic in areas of the shirt, and to detail the eyes. The entire work was then selectively coated with a terra cotta colored, gloss spray paint. There is a loose and playful quality throughout the hair, and a nice mixture of larger brush stokes balanced with delicate black line work. The dimensions of the work are 25.5in. X 19.5in. Created in one sitting, the night of 08/08/08.
