This is the first of a series from a couple of years ago called The Golden Age. It was published by a major publisher (so no prints off here!). The biggest difficulty for me was getting people to realise it is not a collage, but that the subject is painted in acrylic. Another painting using the ever-changing Zoe as my model.
acrylic on canvas (13cm x 19cm) Image purchased from bigstockphotos.com. We have been invited to an engagement party and the invitation asked for no presents, but as a joke at the end, they mentioned that ‘they accept antique watches, because you can never have enough of those’. So, I hope they like this one!
Acrylic on canvas / Abstract painting by Carmen Cilliers
This is a fascinating combination of acrylic, paper, refractive paint and inks to explore where I feel the pre-Raphaelites may have gone had they had the freedom and the materials we have available today. It is the first of a new series of paintings and is the most refreshing and exciting thing to work on. I love the Pre-Raphaelite paintings, but I feel they have always needed a treatment beyond the tight controls of the genre. The brotherhood were masters of portraiture and I couldn’t find a better way of exploring the techniques they employed. Watch out for more of these coming soon ! :-)
Mixed mediums: Acrylic, rice paper, linen thread, pigment powder on canvas. / Size: 613×917 x 42 mm; Framed size: 970×665 x 50 mm Concept: Practically stitches bind, attach, and connect materials and/or surfaces together and is a metaphor for human bonding. The stitch becomes the ‘thread’, linking and connecting to the human psyche. Using a needle and thread by hand to stitch is a slow, methodical and sometimes painful process, of pushing and pulling through materials. The process reveals the two sides (dual nature) and the in-between to this affair. / / Abstractly worked, the stitch is used metaphorically for relaying energies and relationship formations. / Spirit Matter Cosmos abstractly references and resonates concepts of duality, the conscious and unconscious, complexity and simplicity, the spirit and alchemy of ‘relationships’ (blood & gold symbolism), transitory formations (the faded) illusions to connections and perceived realities. Always within, is the ‘spirit’, the centre, a voice of wisdom that guides and directs us in and through and beyond the ‘matter’. A series of organic, earthy, original paintings meant to be displayed together, or hung in groups of 2 or 3 or alone. These paintings were created in the spirit to represent a feeling of earthy elements, organic compositions and natural, earthy colors. Paint layering process is used in these paintings to create many layers and depths of texture. This particular painting “Organic Elements” Series I has earthy yet vibrant colors of yellow, gold, brown, red, orange, and bronze.
This was a commissioned piece for Zaira.
18×24 acrylic on canvas I painted this one for The Divine Feminine’s challenge “Loving Ladies”. This is my favorite goddess of Love, Lakshmi. This is not your traditional painting of Lakshmi, for instance, I didn’t give her 4 arms. But I think it captures her beauty and femininity. Lakshmi is also the goddess of beauty and wealth. She is kind of like the goddess of the law of attraction. In truth, Lakshmi teaches us to accept our beauty and to find true happiness in the realization of the abundance of our soul.
