I’ve been keeping a close eye on the featured and popular pages on Red Bubble, and wondering where all the painters, illustrators and graphic artists are?! There are some AMAZING artists working in these media on the site, but it just seems like they’re all being lost in the system. I have nothing against photography or the photographers, but it’d be nice to see a more even spread. So – do your bit! Upload your best painting, illustrative or graphic pieces Seek out painted and illustrated works Comment, fave and watch! The popular algorithm is a closely guarded Red Bubble secret, however I’m sure doing the above things can help boost painting and illustration on this site. I know we can all help bring attention to the amazing artists on this site who deserve to have a little light shone on them! I will go through my own watch list and select and feature artists who I think deserve to be a little more popular. I have sent in my request to have an Illustration group on RB, and Kathleen emailed me back a few days later and said that many people had requested the same thing and that they were nutting out a plan for launching such a group. I really can’t wait, I do think a group dedicated to illustrators might be the shot in the arm needed for illustrative artists. If you’re with me, let me know!! Spread the word! (I have submitted this to a few groups, please let me know if this is appropriate – because I think it is, and highly beneficial to us all!!)

I have been making continuous sales for a while now, [made some more today] and it makes me quite happy…but it means I will be thinking more of what buyers like as cards and prints and showing it on my pages… / / As a result, I have been deleting paintings on a regular basis…that being said, I would like to continue to show you, my friends, my many different styles of paintings….. so I’m thinking of showing them in the writing section, and I will include some info on the painting itself…colours used, type of paper, special effects if any, and so on..there will be subject matter of every kind… / I have been asked a number of times “how did you do that” or “what paper did you use”? / I have an idea for a series of articles called [so far] “Tales from an Artist’s Journal”, but I will do it only if there is sufficient interest…as some of you already know, it’s takes a lot of time and effort to write anything… / So if you are interested in seeing more of my other work and learning a bit of how I achieve the effects in some of the pieces, please let me know….Janis

Diesel on Decks – The Art Piece / ...
Diesel on Decks – The Art Piece / - This is my favourite design to date and, as I was rummaging through the house the other day I stumbled across an acrylic paint set. / So I popped down the shop, purchased some 45×60 canvas’ and decided it was time to convert my art from digital to reality. I decided to take some photos of the process and as it stands, I believe I am 1/4 of the way through. Enjoy. —-—-—-—-- / To start, I hopped into Photoshop and made my canvas the same size as the ‘real’ canvas. In this case, 45cm x 60cm, with 300dpi. Then I dragged my vector image across and resized it to fit the Photoshop canvas. Unfortunately I don’t have a massive printer, so I printed the image across 4 pieces of paper, (there was a little bit of the image missing on each page) aligning each page with the reference corner; eg. top left image on the page aligns with top left corner, bottom right aligns to bottom right corner etc. Then, I printed a colour version of the center image, where most of the ‘action’ happens. I will use this image for colour reference, and also tracing later on. Then came the question of how to get that design onto the canvas. Remembering back to primary school, I used a highly advanced technique (WARNING – NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED) called…...TRACING. Told you it was advanced! I coloured the back of the main colour image, and then, using my 4 pages as a guide, I traced the image directly onto the canvas. Ooooooh! Then I posed for this really cool shot. Then next bit was to get my paints out and start colouring in the areas. Even though I will later cover over the edges with thick black outlines, I wanted to be as neat as possible and take my time on this artwork. I tend to usually rush things in real life so it was a good test! When I paint, I have a habit of pouring out way too much paint then I need. Today was no different. I’m sure I will learn to perfect this wasting technique as the days go on. I was drawing/painting for about 2 hours and I’m quite proud of how far I have got already. I’m also very happy with where it is going, and it may not look like much in the final drawing SO FAR, but in my opinion it’s on track! I’m not sure how long it will take to finish it, probably another 4 days when I get the time, but I will put up another Journal entry asap! This is where we leave it for today, but stay tuned…I will finish this! If you like this art piece, please view it here > /

There’s a guy on here by the name of Tony, profile name anticus50 who does some of the most amazing work i’ve ever seen and doesn’t get nearly enough credit for it! I’m writing this Journal in the hope that a few of you will go and be amazed! In Tony’s own words: “I mainly use acrylics but have experimented with everything over the years and finally settled on them. Films and entertainment are my main inspiration at the moment but i do go through phases. I’ve stopped searching for a “style” and just settled down with what I do – I think I evolve with every piece….” I’ve chosen this piece “Trinity” by Tony as a sneak preview of his awesome acrylic on canvas work. Do yourself a favour and give him a squiz!

Just want to say a big thank you to everyone who has viewed my work … the tally is now 50,310 (Journals not included) which I am staggered by so a BIG THANK YOU to you all. I have also now finished the large oil I was working on but have to wait for a few weeks for it to dry before I can apply the final varnishes to it so for those interested I will do another journal showing the end result prior to varnishing and when it is varnished shall add it to my art folio. Hope you are all well and having fun … I only have another 7 paintings to do now for the exhibition so hopefully I will get them done before November :) Cheers / CJ

I did. It isn’t the first time either. This time I requested Winsor and Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oil Colours. I would be interested to hear if any of you have used them and what you think? I have slowly been collecting convential oil paints too but as I paint on the kitchen table didn’t want to make the whole area smell of white spirit. Not needing to use solvents for mixing and for cleaning brushes attracted me So far I have used acrylics but want to branch out into oils this year. I have tried oils a few times and have been amazed by their ability to mix so well…whereas as soon as the acrylic hits the canvas it dries on a warm day almost instantly. This often means that a use a ‘dry brush’ technique with acrylics to blend colours, sometimes I work with a small sponge too So is it impossible to tell the difference between these water mixable oil colours and traditional ones? All the colours are rated as permanent for lightfastness, some of course are transparent or semi-transparent, others opaque or semi-opaque. There are 40 colours in the range, I have only a fraction of them at the mo. / Artisan mediums can be mixed with them to thin, help in fast-drying and work in impasto I will post again on here when I have tried them out and let you know how I find them. / I have heaps to learn about mediums and if you have a particular favourite I’ll like to know what it is and why? I have seen a great variety of them used by artists on RedBubble…watercolours, pen and ink, pastels, oil crayons, coloured pencils etc… They can be used alone or in combination with each other to achieve some marvellous effects. Happy creating to all. By the way I sold 5 paintings in my first solo exhibition which finished a few weeks ago and was very happy with that. Now it is time to think about the next one. Cheers / Anni

This is a big callout through bubble for people to join one of Red Bubble’s newest groups! We wanted it to be something different that hadn’t been done before – The Feature Fraternity showcases only featured works (featured on red bubble or in groups) The sooner we get more people and works … the sooner we can have a challenge with a prize for the winner!! Anything can be entered into this group (tees, designs, art, photography, illustrations, writing etc) so long as it’s been featured at least once (and it says either in the description or comments, in what group, or where on bubble, it was featured). So far we’ve seen some wonderful work and we’re really looking forward to seeing what’s to come! Tell your bubble friends!! :) New Group – the Feature Fraternity

Way way back in the forgotten mists of time a significant part of my misspent youth was in the company of Dominic Fliegner. Dominic – a horrid individual who deserves everything he has gotten – (lovely wife, three gorgoeus kids, intermittent ducks, napoleonic warfare with eccentric french millionaires…...) now lives in another state and probably because of this he is someone whom I still count as one of my best friends. Dominic is also a gifted and shiftless artist. I have taken several hundred photos of his work and am now busy uploading these to his RedBubble account. In the meantime, I suggest you go and have a look at what he’s been doing.

When I want a smooth glossy finish on a painting I use acrylic mediums. / I like to use these pouring mediums best, Self-Leveling Gel and Clear Tar Gel. The Self-leveling is my favorite. I find that if you spray your surface with alcohol before pouring your work will avoid most bubbles. You can do this between layers while each layer is wet to keep your work mostly bubble free. The Clear Tar Gel and Self-Leveling Gel works best with water added if you are pouring in a dry. You probably will not need to add water in wet cooler climates. Its best to pour a few thin layers after each layer dries. These Gels dry clear. Pour slowly and have your work angled slightly.
