  • / Artist’s conception of The Dawn of the Universe... Mixed Media on Paper In the beginning was the three-pointed star, / One smile of light across the empty face, / One bough of bone across the rooting air, / The substance forked that marrowed the first sun, / And, burning ciphers on the round of space, / Heaven and hell mixed as they spun. In the beginning was the pale signature, / Three-syllabled and starry as the smile, / And after came the imprints on the water, / Stamp of the minted face upon the moon; / The blood that touched the crosstree and the grail / Touched the first cloud and left a sign. In the beginning was the mounting fire / That set alight the weathers from a spark, / A three-eyed, red-eyed spark, blunt as a flower, / Life rose and spouted from the rolling seas, / Burst in the roots, pumped from the earth and rock / The secret oils that drive the grass. In the beginning was the word, the word / That from the solid bases of the light / Abstracted all the letters of the void; / And from the cloudy bases of the breath / The word flowed up, translating to the heart / First characters of birth and death. In the beginning was the secret brain. / The brain was celled and soldered in the thought / Before the pitch was forking to a sun; / Before the veins were shaking in their sieve, / Blood shot and scattered to the winds of light / The ribbed original of love. Dylan Thomas

  • Full View to please. You must be a fellow Xbox 360 gamer to “get” this shirt.. / Achievements are the new Points system in current games. Not too much different from what you find in the (sadly) dissapearing Mall Arcades. And just like the Arcade Leaderboards, Achievements can get pretty addictive. Hince the T-shirt. _ Not very Girl friendly, I know. But don’t worry, I’m working on a few ideas.

There is an article in this morning’s paper that the National Gallery of Australia is seeking to raise $150 million to purchase new art. They are calling on the philanthropy of wealthy Australians (I guess they would also take money from others if they were so inclined). This is a good thing. Although on one level I question why somebody would give to acquire multi-million dollar art pieces rather than give to save lives in Burma or China. But I can sort of see it. The art is uplifting, raises the tone of society and you get to go to really good dinners and meet really important people. But on another level, I cannot help but feel that this excessive emphasis on “great art” is not very good at achieving the “meta” purpose (the purpose behind the purpose). If the objective is to use art to uplift society, then “great art” is a pretty blunt weapon. There is on old saying along the lines: “Tell me and I may remember / Show me and I may copy / Let me do and I will understand”. Great art is all about telling. We have put too much emphasis on it at the expense of allowing people to participate in art. RedBubble is all about further understanding by helping and encouraging people to do art. This is a higher order purpose, albeit one with far fewer fancy dinners associated with it and the important people we meet are family and friends. by Martin Hosking (aka Pilgrim)

  • I attended a Welcome Home ceremony for a brigade of nearly 4000 American soldiers who just returned home from fifteen months of duty in Baghdad, Iraq. It was a very moving tribute to these men and women who gave of themselves so unselfishly for the cause of liberty and especially for the 14 fallen soldiers and their families. The story they told is quite different from the ones we hear in the media. They spoke to us about the Iraqi people, about their becoming more unified as a nation and less divided into religious factions, about the strides being made where women’s rights are concerned, about the strengthening of their economy, about new schools being built, about the ongoing turnover of defense into the hands of the Iraqi army, about a nation that is finding itself and reveling in its emerging identity. It was heartwarming to hear the stories, to see the pride on the faces of the soldiers who felt they had made a difference in the world. I think this photo summarizes the message they gave us at the Welcome Home ceremony—a message from troops who felt they had succeeded in accomplishing the mission they were sent to do, that they were “in step” with the vision for a better Iraq and a better world.

  • If a butterfly can flap its wings a thousand times a minute to reach its destinations, imagine what you can do! (Author unknown) The monarch butterfly on a bed of phlox is a lovely scene from my mother’s garden. The phlox were cuttings taken from the garden of my mentor during my practice teaching days in college over 30 years ago. Dear old Mrs. Branton who gave me the cuttings has long since passed away, but her flowers live on and so do the memories I have of her. She was a great inspiration to me and she would have approved of the sentiment on this image!

  • this is a work inspired by watching a bunch of tulips rising high under the sun light brings the feeling of hope…....

  • This song has been in my head a lot recently because of two articles I just posted in my writing pages on Artists and Abuse and Self Esteem.... / The sentiments expressed in the song tie in perfectly with both of them…Russell is a slightly surreal writer/musician, with a deep basis of truth to his songs… many of the giants of his era were in fact “linked by life and a funeral pyre”.. / I started the painting a few days ago and it grew and developed at the same time I did the editing for the articles…it is painted entirely by hand in Acrylic on Arches Not Paper….as always with my work there is no photo editing I’m up on the tightrope , one sides hate and one is hope / It’s a circus game with you and me. / I’m up on the tightwire , linked by life and the funeral pyre / But the tophat on my head is all you see. And the wire seems to be the only place for me / A comedy of errors and I’m falling / Like a rubber neck giraffe, you look into my past / Well, baby you’re just to blind to see. I’m up in the spotlight, oh does it feel right / The altitude seems to really get to me. / I’m up on the tightwire linked by life and the funeral pyre / Putting on a show for you to see...Leon Russell THE GREAT LEON RUSSELL…MUSIC
