There is an article in this morning’s paper that the National Gallery of Australia is seeking to raise $150 million to purchase new art. They are calling on the philanthropy of wealthy Australians (I guess they would also take money from others if they were so inclined). This is a good thing. Although on one level I question why somebody would give to acquire multi-million dollar art pieces rather than give to save lives in Burma or China. But I can sort of see it. The art is uplifting, raises the tone of society and you get to go to really good dinners and meet really important people. But on another level, I cannot help but feel that this excessive emphasis on “great art” is not very good at achieving the “meta” purpose (the purpose behind the purpose). If the objective is to use art to uplift society, then “great art” is a pretty blunt weapon. There is on old saying along the lines: “Tell me and I may remember / Show me and I may copy / Let me do and I will understand”. Great art is all about telling. We have put too much emphasis on it at the expense of allowing people to participate in art. RedBubble is all about further understanding by helping and encouraging people to do art. This is a higher order purpose, albeit one with far fewer fancy dinners associated with it and the important people we meet are family and friends. by Martin Hosking (aka Pilgrim)

Not too much different from what you find in the (sadly) dissapearing Mall Arcades. And just like the Arcade Leaderboards, Achievements can get pretty addictive. If a butterfly can flap its wings a thousand times a minute to reach its destinations, imagine what you can do! (Author unknown) The monarch butterfly on a bed of phlox is a lovely scene from my mother’s garden. The phlox were cuttings taken from the garden of my mentor during my practice teaching days in college over 30 years ago. Dear old Mrs. Branton who gave me the cuttings has long since passed away, but her flowers live on and so do the memories I have of her. She was a great inspiration to me and she would have approved of the sentiment on this image!

I attended a Welcome Home ceremony for a brigade of nearly 4000 American soldiers who just returned home from fifteen months of duty in Baghdad, Iraq. It was a very moving tribute to these men and women who gave of themselves so unselfishly for the cause of liberty and especially for the 14 fallen soldiers and their families. The story they told is quite different from the ones we hear in the media. They spoke to us about the Iraqi people, about their becoming more unified as a nation and less divided into religious factions, about the strides being made where women’s rights are concerned, about the strengthening of their economy, about new schools being built, about the ongoing turnover of defense into the hands of the Iraqi army, about a nation that is finding itself and reveling in its emerging identity. It was heartwarming to hear the stories, to see the pride on the faces of the soldiers who felt they had made a difference in the world. I think this photo summarizes the message they gave us at the Welcome Home ceremony—a message from troops who felt they had succeeded in accomplishing the mission they were sent to do, that they were “in step” with the vision for a better Iraq and a better world.

After all, a t-shirt is much less expensive than a pair of shoes… George, a.k.a Monocotilidono , a good RB friend of mine, sent me a bubblemail today concerning the original design of Social Climber Tee . He suggested that I make the shoes transparent in order to have the colour of the t-shirt show thru. I thought that it was a fabulous idea, and immediately went to work, converting the design to black and white instead of the slightly sepia tone, in order to fit a wider choice of t-shirt colours.
