This is one hell of an old Japanese Maple. It was brought here from Japan around 100 years ago and planted in one the Dandenong Ranges oldest gardens.
This is the only addition to our garden that is mine. I love the colour and shape of the leaves. I put the camera underneath the canopy and pointed up. A blind shot that worked well.
Acer is a genus of trees or shrubs. There are approximately 125 species, most of which are native to Asia, but several species also occur in Europe, Northern Africa, and North America. The word Acer is derived from a Latin word meaning “sharp” (referring to the characteristic points on the leaves) and was first applied to the genus by the French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort in 1700.
I shot this last November on a really cold day down on Lake Ashi, near Mount Komagatake and Fuji-san. Nikon D300 / 80-200mm f/2.8
This was shot last autumn and I am looking forward to making friends with this tree again as it was truly spellbinding in its beauty.

Fall has arrived ….. (autumn) inspired by ‘autumn leaves’ by Paolo Nutini … you will love this song! this would make a great card
Finally I got out amongst the autumn trees today with two of my photography students. Plus I had a little time myself to shoot some of the trees in Yoyogi Park on what was a beautiful day with gorgeous light. This pic is currently in the ‘Zen’ competition at JPEG magazine. If you fancy voting for it, click below: http://www.jpgmag.com/photos/1247898 Nikon D300 / 80-200mm f/2.8 ED IF / Hasselblad border film scanned in [this pic just seemed to suit a square composition]
I balanced the exposure of this shot for the highlights. The light and colour was just amazing looking up through the trees into the sun. Nikon D300 / 80-200mm f/2.8 ED IF
I spent some time at the beautiful Rikugien Park today. This little detail of branches, leaves and bokeh caught my eye soon after arriving at the park. Nikon D300 / Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 ED IF @ f/2.8
A young leaf of a red acer, backlit by the afternoon sun in my back garden. Canon EOS 20D Tamron 70-300mm. Acer in Red was featured in the groups:” Trees and There Parts”, “Colour and Light”, “If it Doesn’t Belong” “60 And Beyond” and “Made By Nature” and was in the top ten in the challenge “RED”
A ‘bonding’ moment which really made me appreciate my dslr…. An ‘as is’ image (completely untouched) looking up from my compost heap (!) at a colourful spring acer last week… Nikon D60 / Nikkor VR18-200 lens / UV filter / (on aperture priority) / f/8 / 1/160sec / ISO-100 / 200mm Cheers so much for looking / :))))

Manitoba Maple. This tree belongs to the neighbours of the farm where I lived for 5 years. Every year I would wait for it to drop its leafs. It’s so gorgeous when it’s bare. Canon EOS Digital Rebel / f/10 / 1/400 / ISO-100
Every Autumn, mother nature loads her brush with yellows, oranges and reds and paints the trees with brilliant colour. I wish I could capture the true beauty of the season in watercolours! Watercolour on paper.
