“Within our deepest and truest selves / is the capacity to weather the / twin storms of / acclaim and rejection… for surely both acclaim and rejection / wash over us like constant breakers; / assail us like strong winds” K.C 2008 a reminder of the life (cost) that it is to be an artist. / There are two storms, both equal in intensity. / Acclaim and Rejection… / Storms that come our way. / (Probably more so for us creative types.) / How we deal with these storms is what will ultimately make (or break) us in the end. / We have to stop and realise that they are in fact both storms in equal measure. / They will come and go. / How do we live, balanced and whole within a stormy environment? / Acclaim and Rejection… / accept that both are a natural part of life, like all of lifes’ storms… / accept them, breathe and move on…
Purity is a celebration of life and experience, a journey of recovery and discovery held at Box Hill Community Arts Center Gallery.
a press release for my most recent exhibition Purity
It has been said that the body is the cathedral of the soul. In this painting the fallen figure, be it me or you, or the Christ before resurrection, has been shown without flesh to accentuate the relationship between the rib cage of man and the ribs of the church behind. In this case the church is real. It is the Romanesque church of the Santa Maria Monestary in Alcobaca, Portugal. The architecture is Cistercian with the choir area dating from the early 1200’s AD. The city in the background (left) is Concord, New Hampshire, where I lived and worked for many years before moving to Windham, NH recently.
As an artist, I feel this is my best work. It is a self-portrait that leads off into the future, painted years ago in what I would now call my dark period. My life has changed a lot since then, and I have overcome many of the dark fears and subconscious memories, many of which are still hidden from my waking life. There is a lot of symbolism here. And, enough so that for once I will just shut my mouth and let you read it as you see it. I still enjoy seeing its design, attention to detail, and even if dark, it’s clear light. I hope you enjoy it as well. Thanks, Dave.
Symbolism – the ups and downs of life, exemplified by the Ferris Wheel. The child enters. The mother protects. The world awaits.
Art critic Clement Greenberg made the hypothesis years ago that Impressionism was the first step taken by modern art to get away from the illusion of space that had predominated painting for hundreds of years. Expressionism and the growth of the abstract painiting was seen as the logical conclusion of this process. Here “Surface Tension” balances that theory with an illusionistic space where all the subjects attempt to define the surface just in case you were thinking we were not aware of this critical assessment of the world and ‘progress’ of painting away from space.
What the eyes see. What the mind dreams.
From the collection of Mark Martsolf, but offered here for prints. Sometimes I get very wordy about the paintings mean, and other times I just say, “You know? I really don’t know?” If I can think of something pithy I will add it later.
The galaxy in the background is M81, a beautiful Sb-type spiral. Of course the relatively nearby stars that form Ursa Major (The Big Dipper) are far beyond us now as we sail out into deep space to examine the contrapuntal forces of family love, fear, and agression that appear to mark our species for better or worse. The child enters. I hope we are learning something from generation to generation.
I like to think of this man as a fisherman who is remembering his life. He is made up of these memories; wife, baby, strong youth with dreams of riches, the fish all around him, the birds waiting to get the scraps, the strong clifs and hills of his treasured rugged coastline.
Sort of a double self-portrait in the days when I was twisted and trying to find a way out of the maze I was in to a more open space where I could grow and express myself.
This is a great painting for a child’s bedroom or play area. There is a small man floating in the yellow bowl, probably dreaming, with all of his childhood imaginary friends surrounding him.

I love absract forms that sit on the edge between pure abstraction and a surrealism where the observer can imagine known objects or anthropormorphic shapes. I also love light. Here is use a hidden light in deep space that is lighting up realistic three-dimensional space. The globular cluster M13 is of course in the Messier object in the constellation Hercules. I have always had an interest in astronomy, cosmology, and metaphysics in general. Newer works are going to be filled with sunshine.
It’s out there.
Two people, an adult and child, both float in clouds that weave far out in space over a planet that also forms the head of the earth mother god Gaia. The idea is to show how fragile our little blue planet is. We should all think a bit about the word stewardship in this respect. This small blue marble is all we have and all we really have to give to our children.
This 3D image is from an old screensaver I made years ago called “Alien Babes”. I was really sucking up to the male computer geek mentality, but the days of pay-for-screensavers were numbered as Hollywood figured out it was a great way to promote new movies – screensavers for free!
The ‘Alien Babes’ screensaver featured Picque Dayton’s trip across the universe through lands where women rule the lands. Here, Picque has just arrived in Hive City.
A very religious gathering. Please seek inner peace! BTW, the quality of the image will only support a medium-sized print. Large size and poster size should be ordered at your own risk.
AKA ‘Celebration’ on other sites, this one is sheer fun and play.
