A Wedge-tailed Eagle Aquila audax, the largest bird of prey in Australia, begins its take off. Females weigh more than 4kg, so they need to have big pectoral muscles to get them off the ground. Katherine, Northern Territory, Australia.
A Black Kite (Milvus migrans), one the world’s most common birds of prey soars with clouds, showing off the diagnostic feature (at least in Australia) of a forked tail (they are often called Fork-tailed Kites), west of Katherine, Northern Territory, Australia.
A majestic Wedge-tailed Eagle (Aquila audax), Australia’s biggest raptor, surveys the surroundings, looking for its next meal. Katherine, Northern Territory, Australia.
Red Goshawks (Erythrotriorchis radiatus) are Australia’s most elusive bird of prey (well at least I saw a Grey Falcon before I saw a Red Goshawk!). Living in the tropical north of Australia they are one of two ‘weird’ Australian raptors with little in common with other BOPs and are not Goshawks (genus Accipiter) at all. This young bird was photographed near a well known nest site near Mataranka, Northern Territory, Australia. Red Goshawks are considered Vulnerable by the IUCN because of their small population size.
I used to think that this was just an Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) one of three or four truly cosmopolitan bird species (Barn Owl and Great Egret being the other two), but now I find that it is an Eastern Osprey (Pandion cristatus) and there is a third species, the American Osprey (P. carolinensis) that is the bird found throughout the Americas. This one doesn’t care what we call it, though, it is just interested in the fish it has caught, probably from the nearby sewage farm, or maybe the Katherine River. It is a touch back-lit and over-exposed, but dramatic none-the-less! Katherine, Northern Territory, Australia.
The Eagle – Divine spirit, chief of all the creatures in the air, the primary servant of the Sun. Powerful in battle, the eagle protects the people from evil. Eagle medicine attributes include clear vision and soaring spirit. Here, three Eagles race about the Sun, depicted by a Katsina SunFace.
The Native American bald eagle is sacred and the Messengers of The Creator for many First People Nations. This painting is dedicated to all First People nations and tribes. Oil on 16×20 stretched canvas.
A beautiful (perhaps) Northern Goshawk (subfamily Accipitrinae) looking for a prey within the Calgary city limits. I managed to come as close as it was comfortable for the bird, but when too close, it took off gracefully towards the boardering prairies. For this I used a Canon 75-300mm lens at 300mm on Canon EOS 40D.
Adult Osprey sitting on nest protecting young chick who is trying to poke his head up to see what’s going on! / Photographed on Kootenay Lake, BC Canon 20D / 1/400sec f7.1 ISO 200
