Fresh from a paddle in the bird-bath this Eastern Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris) pauses in the evening sun. Without hummingbirds in Australia, this is one a few honeyeaters that hover to retrieve nectar from tubular flowers. Frankston, Victoria, Australia.
This little Eastern SpineBill is enjoying a freshly caught dragonfly … unfortunately he stayed amongst the branches and this was the best of several captures. Canon 450D / 75-300 zoom lens please view large An attractively marked, tiny honeyeater with a long, downward curving beak for probing deep into long-throated flowers. The head is black with a conspicuous red eye. The neck is rust-brown fading to mid-brown on the lower back. By contrast the throat and upper breast are pure white and separated from the buff lower breast by a thin black line. In the centre of the throat is a bright reddish-brown patch. The wings and tail are black. Total length is only around 15cm. / Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris
One of the smallest and most active honeyeaters, the eastern spinebill is often seen darting after insects. But it feeds primarily on nectar. Its favourite flowers include those of banksias and eucalypts but it specialises in taking nectar from tubular flowers with its long thin bill from plants such as Grevillea as seen here. It is known to hover to feed and for this reason is sometimes mistaken for a humming bird. / This is the male who has an overall length of 150-160 mm, including 25-33mm bill.
