Canon 20D – 17-40mm L – 17mm – 1s – f/11 Antelope Canyon is the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon formed over the course of millions of years by erosion of the Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to wind erosion. Rainwater (especially during monsoon season) runs into the wash that Antelope Canyon is part of, picking up speed and sand as it rushes through the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways are eroded away, making the corridors wider and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic ‘flowing’ shapes in the rock. Upper Antelope Canyon, called Tse bighanilini, “the place where water runs through rocks” by the Navajo, is the most frequently visited by tourists, due to two considerations. First, its entrance and entire length are at ground level, requiring no climbing. Second, beams (shafts of direct sunlight radiating down from openings in the top of the canyon) are much more common in Upper than in Lower. View looking up the stairwell of the Point Hicks lighthouse, Croajingolong National Park. This lighthouse is immaculate and has been well looked after. It was named after Leutenant HICKS who was the first person to site this part of Australia during Captain Cooks voyage. They continued up the East coast of Australia eventually landing at the town called Seventeen Seventy. / Thankyou very much to the person who purchased my image as a card! I would like to thank Redbubble for featuring this piece. It’s hard for me to account for it’s popularity, as it started as only a lens test. The image was taken against a slightly weatherbeaten grain elevator in downtown Frisco, Texas. This is what produced the texture for the shot. Unfortunately (for photography), the elevator has since been repainted. This intimate, bright yet dark, static yet flowing, autumn themed image was made in Baxter State Park, Maine, USA in October 2006. I like the contrast of the flowing water beneath the still branches, the pop of color from the remaining birch leaves, and the juxtaposition of the branch atop the stream in tone and color! /
