George Berkeley’s dictum was “to be, is to be perceived.“ / In an article in the Scientific American dating all the way back to Apr 5, 1884, they examined the question and came up with this answer: / “Sound is vibration, transmitted to our senses through the mechanism of the ear, and recognized as sound only at our nerve centers. The falling of the tree or any other disturbance will produce vibration of the air. If there be no ears to hear, there will be no sound.” / It follows then, that if you can’t see me, I’m not here.
