Abstract – Acrylic on canvas
Acrylic on canvas 48” x 32” / My apologies for the low-res image, it is the only one I have of this painting. / The colours in the original are far richer and deeper in appearance than in this reproduction. (The painting sold ‘off the easel’ before I had time to photograph it properly) The reason for this lengthy description – which is something that I do not normally add to my work – is that, ‘Timeline’ has been entered into Mufas temporary gallery in order for critical assessment to be applied, and a decision made as to whether it is a Putist work. / Putism is a new art movement that is being created right here, right now, by artists from the Painters in Modern Times group in RedBubble. The Birth of Putism can be seen here / ............. The central form in the painting takes the shape of an (allegorical) trilobyte, an ancient creature that has lived for the whole history of our planet. Time moves from the top to the bottom of the canvas. The thin red line across the canvas represents the time that we have been on the earth. / .............. The creature is the first form that I thought of when I faced the newly primed blank canvas, while drawing in the form the idea ‘time’ entered my mind. The ‘human’ time element of the painting is also an allegory of the creative time of the artist, a brief but incandescent culmination of an immense background. We are all potentially greater than the sum of our antecedents. / ................ The painting developed a circularity of meaning, the creativity feeds and bleeds (blue) into the immensity and makes it even more immense, which feeds more creativity. The thin red diagonal line is the path through which we connect to our planet’s history and our own histories which then acts as a channel and route for our creativity. It is the ‘string’ that we have laid to find our way back. / ............... The future section at the base of the painting (the other side of the line) is painted as the mouth of a river seen from space. It represents the nourishment of the future by our creativity. I have tried to include in visual form the notion of a ‘future light cone’ ie. A space in which an action (light) entering at a singularity (the rivermouth) has a given future which expands in any unknown direction within the limitations of a conical form, the boundaries of which are prescribed by and expand over a given period of time (to infinity) – I feel that this passage of the painting did not work and almost destroyed the work at that point – I may well return to this theme as a starting point for a new work (see below) This is roughly how I work on all of my large paintings, with an instinctively conjured or remembered element (the trilobyte) and (sometimes) an allegorical theme, followed by a completely free and re-active building of expressive layers (random and controlled) until at some point……the painting starts to work. If it does not work (for me) then I destroy the image and begin again – the new work feeding from the carcass of the old one.

Acrylic, marker, and paint pen on recycled metal sign / 12.5” x 16” / 2008 Nothing is separate from the web of Creation, everything is infused with Spirit and that essence radiates out to everything else. One strand connects to another, opposites merge to create a new element. This becomes That, Everything is Everything. A spider can hold the entire essence of fire and water, fire and water can make steam, new possibilities unfold but always hold the original spark of Divinity. Unique but Unified. A perfect center radiating forever outwards in an eternal web of Creative Spirit. Special thanks to Spider, who showed up unexpectedly in this painting and is my creative Ally.

Acrylic on canvas. Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. / 1 Corinthians 16:13
Submerged in the descending crash of condemnation, I felt the bright, red, fiery, blinding light of anger well up—unstoppable. I refuse to stop breathing. I reach out to God for strength to swim. Am I in a garden pool, or a tidal wave? Does it matter? I still am drowning. Self-doubt holds my head under water. Is is ego, self-preservation or childish reaction that causes me to want to fight? The stone statue face of judgment twists in profile and shouts, “Whatever. Just get over it. Stop whining.” / Still, I see through layers of water above me that the sunlight is streaming. There is more. There is a solution. I do not have to drown. If only I could be patient. / So I paint. It seems to give the waiting a purpose. And after awhile I am no longer waiting. I am there. And I am swimming. / Acrylic on masonite, 24”x34”

Acrylic on Canvas 75×100cm. (Commission – Original Sold) A snippet from my blog 21 April 2009 / Painting Commission – Claudia’s Gift A couple of months ago I was asked to do a rather unusual commission. I say unusual because the buyer saw a painting of mine on the internet. They considered purchasing it, but after much deliberation decided instead to commission a work. The original inspiration for their commission being my painting ‘Between Takes’ as pictured below. / ! / http://images-1.redbubble.net/img/art/backingcolor:white/product:greeting-card/view:preview/2340565-4-between-takes.jpg! The young buyer (through her Mum’s wallet) had several requests and thankfully they put them all together in a brief for me which I worried about being able to stick to. / Here’s a snippet of that brief: / She likes the female in Between Takes because she is: / -Pretty, elegant and sassy with delicate features, yet she is fun, bold and out there / -She is wearing a very fashionable/designer/funky outfit (very youthful appearance with use of the striped legs) / -She loves the white fluff of the skirt, it is interesting and softens the outfit beautifully / -it is a full body painting and not just a head and torso / -it is simple and clean with not too much distraction, it is very much about the girl / -she’s not wearing any jewellery / -fun dramatic/theatrical feel / -bold yet delicate/beautiful detail / -she loves the colours and in particular the lime green/yellow background / Colours she likes: / -pink/purple/lime yellow/lime green/black/gray/silver/white / Other Preferences: / -Medium length layered hair/colour similar to By The Light Of The Silver Moon (no fringe/medium brown with purple/other coloured streaks) / -Eye colour being hazel/green / -Devon Rex Tigerlily Purple (larger female cat) / -Cat not to dominate painting / We did wonder if we could incorporate fashionable fairy wings in her designer outfit (fluff and silver leaf perhaps)?! Commissions can be difficult because they normally come after a painting that has been painted intuitively. I tend to just paint and enjoy the process and let my instincts lead me. With commissions there is much more work on a conscious level – and the challenge is in being able to please the buyer, stick to the brief, maintain a sense of spontanaity and most importantly not to compromise one’s own style and enjoyment. After all, a painting done without love and enjoyment is not a painting worth owning. One only needs to look at the thousands of cheap mass produced paintings being produced in Asia and then later easily discarded when the decor is changed. I strongly feel that work of this type diminishes the value of one off pieces painted with love and care, not to mention that these are potential artists with much to offer the world, churning our mass produced cheap pieces because of the need to support their families. / / So, with all this in mind, and me being well and truly a month over the patient client’s requested deadline, I present to you “Claudia’s Gift”. One thing must be said and that is that the photograph doesn’t do this painting justice. The small elements of silver leaf, pearlescent effect and subtle textures are lost and flattened out in the digital image. However, I think the photograph still enables the viewer to enjoy an overall sense of the completed artwork. Thank You as always for visiting… and stay safe. x Carmen. A 40cm x 40cm acrylic painting on canvas of maple leaves. It was raining here one day so I grabbed my camera and went and took some photos of the glistening Japanese Maple leaves in our garden. I decided to paint them on a canvas painted black to show off their colours and add contrast and was very pleased with the outcome. Maple Leaves See the leaves on the maple tree / The rain has gone, they blow wild and free… / Sparkling raindrops settle and gleam / A delightful show that must be seen!
