  • A number of years ago, we took a family holiday up in North Yorkshire, England. On a day out, we decided to take a trip on the Steam Train that runs from Grosmont to Pickering, across the moors. I love the sights, sounds, and smells of steam trains. They represent a more romantic time. I took this shot in Grosmont as the train was loading for the next trip. It was like stepping back into another era. The trip along the railway was so fascinating and exciting. On the way back, I was invited to ride on the footplate up at the engine. Watching the fireman shoveling coal and getting to blow the whistle were the highlight of the day! This is an HDR image combining four images. I also applied the Orton effect to soften the image. • Featured in All Things Black – 6/23/09 Built for the Florida East Coast Railway in 1924 by the American Locomotive Company, #253 is an 0-8-0 road switcher that was designed to assemble and move whole trains in the yard and do light rail work. When the FEC went diesel, she and her sisters were retired and sold. Most fell to the torch, but #253 and a few others escaped to work for some smaller railroads throughout the country. (From the brochure) #253 was retired in 1956 and was on display in Texarkana until the late 1990’s where she was kept in a covered area that helped to keep her in restorable condition. After considerable roadblocks and detours, she has finally found her rightful place in Ft. Pierce, FL to be transformed into that wonderful workhorse that she once was. A few facts about #253 / Weight: 215,000 lbs. (108 tons) / Lenght: 70 feet / Boiler: 7 foot diameter / Top speed: 35mph / Tender capacity: 8,000 gals of water & 2,000 gals of fuel oil #253 is one of six remaining engines of a total of 275 owned by FEC Ry Locomotives. #253 is also the only full size steam locomotive to be operated in the state of Florida and the only example of its type to be operating in the United States of America. Now resides in Ft. Pierce, FL. Full restoration is said to be finished by late 2009 or early 2010. Please help support the efforts of all those involved in the restoration project and museum (they have some awesome things in there) with a purchase of this image or the others shown (available upon request). Proceeds from the sales will be split and donated to the Steam Locomotive Association 253. A special thanks to the guys that showed me around and their wealth of information and support of me and their project. / / Nikon D70s / 18-50mm / F14, 1/400 / RAW / 6/15/09 – 556/6

  • We passed a field full of fabulous sunflowers last week and stopped to take a few pictures. Well, sunflowers are not the rarest of motives but that friendly yellow tone on a summer´s day was just irresistable! And then this little Peacock butterfly (thanks Sharon!) did me a favour and alighted this perfect blossom… Taken somewhere between Bamberg and Würzburg (Germany), on Monday, July 13. 2009, with a Pentax K20 and an 18 – 200 mm tele. It is untouched, not even cropped and was seen through my Irish Eyes ;o) / Eva Enjoy!

  • The Western Maryland Railway Station in Cumberland, Maryland has been wonderfully restored to preserve the rich heritage of times past. This station is located at the very point where the C&O Canal ends. The canal was used to transport mail, coal and goods all the way between Washington, DC and Cumberland, and for distribution to points farther west. The Cumberland and Pennsylvania (C&P) and B&O and railroads were very important additions to the transportation system in the mid 1800s. The railroads eventually replaced the need for the C&O Canal completely. The railroads continued on to Ohio and beyond, but the canal was never extended beyond Cumberland. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad still operates tourist train excursions between Cumberland and Frostburg, MD. The dark history of the competing railroad lines and the C&O Canal is truly quite fascinating. The historic details and stories are kept vividly alive at Canal Place National Park, in Cumberland, Maryland, for all who are interested. This railway station is an integral part of the large National Park complex. The official website for the Western Maryland Railway Station at Canal Place contains the following: Originally opened in July 1913, this grand terminal rivaled stations in larger cities. The Station remained in use as a passenger terminal until 1958, serving the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Western Maryland Railway. Under the care of the Western Maryland Station Center, Inc., and subsequently the Canal Place Preservation & Development Authority, the building underwent a series of renovations, completed in 2000. The Station now houses the Authority’s offices as well as several other offices, visitor services, and attractions. The official website for Canal Place contains the following: In 1993 the State of Maryland created the Canal Place Preservation & Development Authority to oversee the preservation, development, and management of the Canal Place Preservation District, a designated area within the City of Cumberland surrounding the western end of the C&O Canal. This photo was taken on July 11th, 2009, with a Canon EOS 10D using a Canon EF 28-70mm f/2.8L zoom lens, set to the 31mm focal length. The shutter speed was 1/180th sec. at f/8. The camera’s ISO was set to 200. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a remote shutter release cable. Your comments are always welcome!
